We consider the parabolic polyharmonic diffusion and L2-gradient flows of the m-th arclength derivative of curvature for regular closed curves evolving with generalised Neumann boundary conditions. In the polyharmonic case, we prove that if the curvature of the initial curve is small in L2, then the evolving curve converges exponentially in the C∞ topology to a straight horizontal line segment. The same behaviour is shown for the L2gradient flow provided the energy of the initial curve is sufficiently small. We have investigated the physical properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) located in the Galactic Plane, using the JCMT Plane Survey (JPS) and the SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE) survey. By utilizing a suite of molecular-line surveys, velocities, and distances were assigned to the compact sources within the PGCCs, placing them in a Galactic context. The properties of these compact sources show no large-scale variations with Galactic environment. Investigating the star-forming content of the sample, we find that the luminosity-to-mass ratio (L/M) is an order of magnitude lower than in other Galactic studies, indicating that these objects are hosting lower levels of star formation. Finally, by comparing ATLASGAL sources that are associated or are not associated with PGCCs, we find that those associated with PGCCs are typically colder, denser, and have a lower L/M ratio, hinting that PGCCs are a distinct population of Galactic Plane sources. © 2024 The Author(s).

Does my rebuttal matter? Insights from a major NLP conference

Peer review is a core element of the scientific process, particularly in conference-centered fields such as ML and NLP. However, only few studies have evaluated its properties empirically. Aiming to fill this gap, we present a corpus that contains over 4k reviews and 1.2k author responses from ACL-2018. We quantitatively and qualitatively assess the corpus. This includes a pilot study on paper weaknesses given by reviewers and on quality of author responses. We then focus on the role of the rebuttal phase, and propose a novel task to predict after-rebuttal (i.e., final) scores from initial reviews and author responses. Although author responses do have a marginal (and statistically significant) influence on the final scores, especially for borderline papers, our results suggest that a reviewer's final score is largely determined by her initial score and the distance to the other reviewers' initial scores. In this context, we discuss the conformity bias inherent to peer reviewing, a bias that has largely been overlooked in previous research. We hope our analyses will help better assess the usefulness of the rebuttal phase in NLP conferences. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Allergic asthma is a chronic disease tied to unusual immune reactions involving type 2 T helper (Th2) cells specific to allergens. Dendritic cells (DCs) play a crucial role in guiding T-cell responses. Regulatory T (Treg) cells have the ability to suppress effector T-cell responses, and interleukin (IL)-38 is involved in Treg cell differentiation. In this study, we explored impacts of IL-38 on the activation and function of DCs, and we then developed an IL-38-overexpressing adenovirus (Ad-IL38) to evaluate its effectiveness in treating allergic asthma in mice through the adaptive transfer of Ad-IL38-infected DCs (IL38-DCs). Treating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated bone marrow-derived DCs with recombinant IL-38 reduced cluster of differentiation 80 (CD80), CD86, and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II expressions and decreased IL-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α while increasing IL-10 secretion. The simultaneous culture of these semi-mature DCs with allogeneic CD4⁺ T cells facilitated the production of Forkhead box protein P3-positive (Foxp3⁺) Treg cells. A transcriptomic analysis revealed downregulation of the Chil3, Inhba, and Ctgf genes that are crucial for regulating inflammatory responses and cytokine-mediated signaling pathways in IL-38-treated DCs. In an animal model of asthma, IL38-DC treatment effectively decreased levels of an ovalbumin (OVA)-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody in serum, attenuated the severity of airway hyperresponsiveness, reduced the production of Th2-type cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13) and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, lowered expressions of the Th2-related cytokines IL-25 and thymic stromal-derived lymphopoietin (TSLP) by lung epithelial cells, and mitigated airway inflammation. Demographics play a vital role in defining the size, distribution, and structure of a population. In the context of the automobile industry, business owners can leverage demographic insights to gauge the demand for vehicles and strategically align their sales efforts. Accurate sales forecasting is essential for long-term business strategy, providing manufacturers with a competitive advantage in optimizing production planning methods. This project utilizes large-scale automobile sales data to forecast car price variations in the coming months, considering factors such as purchase patterns, car models, and other relevant data. By analyzing different attributes from a past-year dataset, three machine learning algorithms: Linear Regression, Decision Tree Regression, and Random Forest Regression were employed to predict future car prices. The performance of each algorithm is evaluated using the R-squared value. Notably, the Random Forest regression model achieves a higher accuracy of 93%, outperforming both Decision Tree regression and Linear regression. These results demonstrate the suitability of Random Forest regression in predicting big data for the industry’s future product production plan and overall strategy.

Cocoa farming households carry out various livelihood strategies to maintain their survival. The decline in cocoa production is caused by pests and diseases, climate change, bad seeds, and the farmers’ cocoa plants are old. These constraints will affect the condition of cocoa farmer households. This study aims to identify the livelihood strategies and structures carried out by cocoa farming households. The method used in this study uses a quantitative approach using a questionnaire supported by a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The research respondents consisted of 30 cocoa farming households in Polewali Mandar Regency. The results of this study show that the livelihood strategies used by cocoa farmer households are engineering income sources and income diversification. The average livelihood structure of cocoa farmer households comes from the non-farm sector.

The kth power of a graph G = (V, E), Gk, is the graph whose vertex set is V and in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance in G is at most k. This article proves various eigenvalue bounds for the independence number and chromatic number of Gk which purely depend on the spectrum of G, together with a method to optimize them. Our bounds for the k-independence number also work for its quantum counterpart, which is not known to be a computable parameter in general, thus justifying the use of integer programming to optimize them. Some of the bounds previously known in the literature follow as a corollary of our main results. Infinite families of graphs where the bounds are sharp are presented as well. Data Engineering Pipeline to Analyse Jakarta's Air Quality during COVID-19-Caused Lockdown Periods

Jakarta lifted up lockdown after passing more than 50 days of large-scale social activity restriction and initiated phase opening to new normal. To analyse Jakarta's air quality after passing lockdown, a pipeline of data engineering is needed. By acquiring time series data from ***, a time-series database system is developed with Python programming language and its fundamental libraries namely Pandas, NumPy, SQLite. After PM 2.5 data are pre-processed into average per-hour and grouped by applicable periods (pre-lockdown, lockdown, and phase opening), a pattern of PM 2.5 in South Jakarta is revealed by using data visualization library Matplotlib. The apex of PM 2.5 occurs earlier during lockdown (04:00) and phase opening (02:00) rather than when it was normal or pre-lockdown (08:00) even though the nadir of PM2.5 still occurs at the same time (16:00 – 17:00).

We discuss the effect of sequential error injection on information leakage under a network code. We formulate a network code for the single transmission setting and the multiple transmission setting. Under this formulation, we show that the eavesdropper cannot improve the power of eavesdropping by sequential error injection when the operations in the network are linear *** demonstrate the usefulness of this reduction theorem by applying a concrete example of network.
