Deep neural network (DNN) based scene text recognition (STR) methods usually require a large amount of annotated data for training, which is time-consuming and cost-expensive in practice. To address this issue, many data augmentation methods have been developed to train recognizers by improving the diversity of training samples. However, most existing methods neglect the difficulty inherent in samples, and easily suffer from the problem of over-diversity, i.e., the distribution of the augmented data significantly deviates from that of clean data. In this paper, we propose a novel difficulty-aware data augmentation framework for scene text recognition, which jointly considers the difficulty of samples and the strength of augmentations. Specifically, our framework first predicts the sample difficulty, followed by an adaptive data augmentation strategy. Furthermore, we build a more diverse set of augmentation methods for STR and integrate it into our augmentation framework. Extensive experiments on scene text recognition benchmarks show that our augmentation framework significantly improves the performance of recognizers. © 2023 IEEE.

Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are critical for enabling accurate navigation, asset tracking, and emergency response in indoor environments where GPS fails. This study evaluates five machine learning algorithms-K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Decision Tree, and Random Forest-using two benchmark datasets, UJIIndoorLoc and UTSIndoorLoc. The results reveal that SVM achieves the highest accuracy, with 81.3 % on UJIIndoorLoc and 92 % on UTSIndoorLoc, followed by MLP with $\mathbf{7 8. 8 \%}$ and 90.9 %, respectively. Random Forest provides stable performance, with 77.6 % and 86.08 %, while KNN reaches 75 % and 89.7 %, performing well in structured environments. Decision Tree shows the lowest accuracy, 71.2 % and 76.54 %, highlighting its limitations with complex data. The UTSIndoorLoc dataset consistently yields higher accuracies, demonstrating its structured signal distribution. These findings underscore SVM and MLP as optimal algorithms for Wi-Fi fingerprinting IPS, offering robust and scalable solutions for indoor localization.

The gender gap in science, technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields highlights significant research opportunities, particularly in examining the employability of female graduates. This study introduces a novel machine learning framework integrating Clustering and Multi-target Classification to analyze employment waiting time and job linearity among women STEM alumni. Using K-Means Clustering and Multi-Target Logistic Regression, the framework achieved a classification accuracy of 77% and a silhouette score of 0.61, demonstrating its effectiveness in predictive analysis. Beyond these results, the framework offers a robust methodology for integrating Clustering with Classification, enabling a nuanced understanding of the employability challenges faced by women in STEM. This approach identifies key patterns in employment data, paving the way for targeted interventions and actionable insights. Furthermore, the findings aim to inform data-driven policymaking and future research to improve employability outcomes. This work contributes to addressing systemic challenges and fostering gender diversity in STEM careers while enhancing opportunities for women.

Lactose intolerance is a type of digestive problem that may threaten the population because milk and dairy products compose of nutrients that are essential for human body. Genetic tests possess a great potential to detect lactose intolerance as it can be used in children and even infants. However, a new approach to analyze the genetic test results is needed to elucidate the Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) that are related to lactose intolerance. In this work, we utilized the machine learning based feature selection to select the SNPs associated with lactose tolerance trait from genotyping samples of direct-to-customer (DTCG genetic tests, obtained from the public database. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) with XGBoost model was used to perform feature selection. We also compared three different models, such as XGBoost, support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF) for training the selected features. Our findings revealed that 20 SNPs (out of 3501) were chosen, with rs4394668 as the most important variables (F-score 0.009). Furthermore, when compared to the RF and SVM models, the XGBoost model had the highest accuracy (0.87). Further studies should be undertaken to elucidate how the selected SNPs may lead to the lactose intolerance trait. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Emotion Recognition is one field that is taking the world by storm in this current age. Multimodal emotion recognition has shown promising results however, previous studies shows that recognition using speech is a field has not performed that greatly. Previous research used popular methods such as CNN, RNN, and other machine learning methods has been used to achieved good results with the help of other modality, where if speech were to be used alone the results won't be as good. A factor that contributes to the result of the speech modality not performing as well is the fact of the dataset and the way it was processed. Therefore, this research looks into what makes speech one of the lowest performing modalities by preprocessing the dataset using a different method than previous researches as well as using a CNN model paired with a Transformer model. Results achieved from this research showed an improvement when using IEMOCAP by 8.09% and MELD by 1.06%. A comparison results of using the pre-processed data with previous studies model was also done to compare the results. In conclusion, this research has explored a different preprocessing method and deep learning model that has achieved results better than previous works with the same dataset.

Interference is a critical factor that degrades wireless network performance. In IEEE 802.11 wireless broadcast networks, hidden terminals and concurrent transmissions are the primary sources of interference due to the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) mechanism. Therefore, analyzing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) distribution is essential for evaluating network performance, whose derivation relates to the transmission probabilities of hidden terminals and concurrent transmissions. In this study, we utilize the existing semi-markov process (SMP) model to calculate these transmission probabilities. Subsequently, we employ the Laplace transform to analyze the SINR distribution in IEEE 802.11 broadcast ad-hoc networks on highways. Based on the derived SINR distribution, we further evaluate the reliability and capacity. This approach can be readily extended to two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) scenarios by employing d-dimensional (1 ≤ d ≤ 3, dD) point process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves high accuracy under small to medium interference ranges. Additionally, the analysis remains highly accurate for receivers within 70 meters, even in scenarios with large interference ranges. Learning to assemble geometric shapes into a larger target structure is a pivotal task in various practical applications. In this work, we tackle this problem by establishing local correspondences between point clouds of part shapes in both coarse- and fine-levels. To this end, we introduce Proxy Match Transform (PMT), an approximate high-order feature transform layer that enables reliable matching between mating surfaces of parts while incurring low costs in memory and compute. Building upon PMT, we introduce a new framework, dubbed Proxy Match TransformeR (PMTR), for the geometric assembly task. We evaluate the proposed PMTR on the large-scale 3D geometric shape assembly benchmark dataset of Breaking Bad and demonstrate its superior performance and efficiency compared to state-of-the-art methods. Clustering algorithms are crucial in uncovering hidden patterns and structures within datasets. Among the density-based clustering algorithms, DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) has gained considerable attention for its effectiveness in various applications. However, determining appropriate parameter values for this algorithm remains a challenging task. This paper presents a novel methodology for eps parameter estimation for an improved DBSCAN, namely SS-DBSCAN. The experimental results across nine datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed method in accurately determining clusters with eps value from SS-DBSCAN algorithm. The clusters identified using estimated eps values by SS-DBSCAN align well with the inherent structure of the datasets, yielding better cluster results than the manually set parameters and other methods used for automatic estimations of the eps for DBSCAN. Our approach adapted well to the peculiarities of each dataset, whether dealing with different scales, dimensions, or densities;it proved the versatility and robustness across various datasets, thereby emphasizing its generalizability and potential for broader applications. © 2023 IEEE.
