Electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases are spontaneous symmetry breaking states believed to arise from strong electron correlation in quantum materials such as cuprates and iron pnictides. Here, we report a direct observation of a smectic phase in a weakly correlated Dirac nodal line (DNL) semimetal GdSbxTe2-x. Incommensurate smectic charge modulation and intense local unidirectional nanostructure are visualized by using spectroscopic imaging - scanning tunneling microscopy. As topological materials with symmetry protected Dirac or Weyl fermions are mostly weakly correlated, the discovery of such an ELC phase are anomalous and raise questions on the origin of their emergence. Specifically, we demonstrate how chemical substitution generates these symmetry breaking phases before the system undergoes a charge density wave (CDW) - orthorhombic structural transition. Our results highlight the importance of impurities in realizing ELC phases and present a new material platform for exploring the interplay among quenched disorder, topology and electron correlation. Advances in optical and electrophysiological recording technologies have made it possible to record the dynamics of thousands of neurons, opening up new possibilities for interpreting and controlling large neural populations in behaving animals. A promising way to extract computational principles from these large datasets is to train data-constrained recurrent neural networks (dRNNs). Performing this training in real-time could open doors for research techniques and medical applications to model and control interventions at single-cell resolution and drive desired forms of animal behavior. However, existing training algorithms for dRNNs are inefficient and have limited scalability, making it a challenge to analyze large neural recordings even in offline scenarios. To address these issues, we introduce a training method termed Convex Optimization of Recurrent Neural Networks (CORNN). In studies of simulated recordings, CORNN attained training speeds ~ 100-fold faster than traditional optimization approaches while maintaining or enhancing modeling accuracy. We further validated CORNN on simulations with thousands of cells that performed simple computations such as those of a 3-bit flip-flop or the execution of a timed response. Finally, we showed that CORNN can robustly reproduce network dynamics and underlying attractor structures despite mismatches between generator and inference models, severe subsampling of observed neurons, or mismatches in neural time-scales. Overall, by training dRNNs with millions of parameters in subminute processing times on a standard computer, CORNN constitutes a first step towards real-time network reproduction constrained on large-scale neural recordings and a powerful computational tool for advancing the understanding of neural computation. Band topology of anomalous quantum Hall insulators can be precisely addressed by computing the Chern numbers of constituent nondegenerate bands, describing the presence of quantized, Abelian Berry flux through the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. Can Berry flux be captured for the SU(2) Berry connection of two-fold degenerate bands in spinful materials preserving space-inversion (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetries without detailed knowledge of underlying basis? We address this question by investigating the correspondence between a non-Abelian generalization of Stokes' theorem and the manifestly gauge-invariant eigenvalues of Wilson loops computed along in-plane contours which preserve the underlying crystalline symmetry. The importance of this correspondence is elucidated by performing natural number resolved classification of ab initio band structures of three-dimensional, Dirac materials. Our work underscores how identification of quantized Berry flux, both Abelian and non-Abelian, offers a unified framework for addressing first-order and higher-order topology of insulators and semimetals.

An interesting connection between shark spiral intestines and the Tesla valve was proposed recently;however, how Tesla valves interact with active matters and the potential applications of Tesla valves in biology remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a computational study on the potential use of Tesla valves for filtering and sorting microscale active swimmers such as bacteria. We investigated the behavior of microswimmers passing through the Tesla valve at different linear and angular velocities using numerical simulations, and quantified the diodicity of the Tesla valve for active swimmers. Our results demonstrate that the Tesla valve can effectively filter and sort microscale swimmers based on their swimming behavior. The findings of this study suggest that Tesla valves could have potential applications in microscale sorting and chromatography, with significant implications for biomedical and environmental engineering. © 2023, The Authors. Full-marathon and Half-marathon distances are categorized as road running. Full-marathon running is becoming increasingly popular, and Half-marathon is increasing worldwide in both sexes and all age groups. Some aspects might relate to Full-marathon and Half-marathon running performance during training and races. Technology also plays an essential role in supporting runners and running races. Technology like artificial intelligence (AI) now supports the running athlete, not only predicting performance and results. It can also be used later to help the coach generate training programs for the athlete. This research aimed to find many aspects of marathons and performance and analyze them to see if artificial intelligence could later support them. It used secondary data and a systematic literature review proposed by Kitchenham. Out of the 58 articles, 21 of them (36.21%) received a score of 1 from Q1. Additionally, 19 articles (32.76%) received a score of 1 from both Q2 and Q3. Among the 58 articles, 9 (15.52%) received a total score of 3, with all three Q1, Q2, and Q3 scores being 1. This indicates that artificial intelligence will likely support the content of these nine articles. Several factors were also discovered to be connected to marathons and athletic performance. These findings suggested that additional investigation into marathons and performance, later backed by artificial intelligence, remained pertinent and essential.

While numerous methods have been proposed for computing distances between probability distributions in Euclidean space, relatively little attention has been given to computing such distances for distributions on graphs. However, there has been a marked increase in data that either lies on graph (such as protein interaction networks) or can be modeled as a graph (single cell data), particularly in the biomedical sciences. Thus, it becomes important to find ways to compare signals defined on such graphs. Here, we propose Graph Fourier MMD (GFMMD), a novel distance between distributions and signals on graphs. GFMMD is defined via an optimal witness function that is both smooth on the graph and maximizes the difference in expectation between the pair of distributions on the graph. We find an analytical solution to this optimization problem as well as an embedding of distributions that results from this method. We also prove several properties of this method including scale invariance and applicability to disconnected graphs. We showcase it on graph benchmark datasets as well on single cell RNA-sequencing data analysis. In the latter, we use the GFMMD-based gene embeddings to find meaningful gene clusters. We also propose a novel type of score for gene selection called gene localization score which helps select genes for cellular state space characterization. © 2023 IEEE.

In this investigation, we explored the corrosive effects of date palm seed extracted from natural sources and biomass residues on mild steel in a solution of 0.5 M hydrochloric acid (HCl), employing a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Our objective was to scrutinize the interaction of the inhibitor with the metal surface, analyze experimental data, and elucidate how the structural characteristics of the inhibitors influence the corrosion process. The experimental results indicated that as the immersion time and temperature increased, the inhibitory effectiveness declined. Notably, the highest level of inhibition occurred when the concentration of date palm seed extract (DPSE) reached 1100 ppm, showcasing peak inhibitory effects of 95.8% and 97.8% through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Additionally, an analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) was conducted to scrutinize the chemical composition of the mild steel's surface. The adsorption data were evaluated using adsorption isotherms, revealing that DPSE adhered to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm on the mild steel surface. The Langmuir model exhibited the highest linear regression coefficient value and a slope close to unity. The Gibbs free energy () values suggested that the protection afforded by DPSE involved physical and spontaneous absorption. Examination of the results pertaining to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) indicated that the carboxyl (COOH) group and the C=C bond were the principal regions exhibiting elevated electron acceptance activity. These components were found to be crucial in the adsorption process on the surface of iron (Fe). © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
