Fully Polarimetric radar systems are capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in two orthogonal polarizations. Instantaneous radar polarimetry exploits both polarization modes of a dually-polarized radar transmitter and receiver on a pulse by pulse basis, and can improve the radar detection performance and suppress range sidelobes. In this paper, we extend the use of instantaneous radar polarimetry for radar systems with multiple dually-polarized transmit and receive antennas. Alamouti signal processing is used to coordinate transmission of Golay pairs of phase codes waveforms across polarizations and multiple antennas. The integration of multi-antenna signal processing with instantaneous radar polarimetry can further improve the detection performance, at a computational cost comparable to single channel matched filtering.

The concept of intraepithelial neoplasm (IEN) as a near-obligate precursor of cancers has generated opportunities to examine drug or device intervention strategies that may reverse or retard the sometimes lengthy process of carcinogenesis. Chemopreventive agents with high therapeutic indices, well-monitored for efficacy and safety, are greatly needed, as is development of less invasive or minimally disruptive visualization and assessment methods to safely screen nominally healthy but at-risk patients, often for extended periods of time and at repeated intervals. Imaging devices, alone or in combination with anticancer drugs, may also provide novel interventions to treat or prevent precancer.

The inverted-pendulum method of thrust measurement for high-power electric thrusters is described analytically and experimentally. Two sources of uncertainty in the thrust measurements are investigated: those due to changes in the sensitivity of the inverted pendulum and those due to tare forces resulting from thermal stresses and electromagnetic forces acting on the flexural elements. An idealized analytical model shows that changes in sensitivity occur due to changes in the mass loading of the inverted pendulum and the temperature of the flexure elements. The sensitivity can be increased only at the expense of more stringent requirements on mass loading and thermal control. The results of the model are validated with measurements made using a carefully calibrated inverted pendulum thrust stand having several advantageous design features including gallium pots for current conduction, an optical two-axis displacement sensor, and careful consideration of flexure shape and cooling requirements. The sensitivity is shown to be constant over a wide range of operating conditions. Measurements show that thermal drifts of the stand are linear on the time scale of the thrust measurements and are less than 0.6% of the expected thrust. The thrust stand operation was demonstrated during experiments with a 30-kW lithium-fed applied-field magnetoplasmadynamic thruster. Under nominal conditions (400 A, 0.1 T, 17.5 mg/s) the thermal and electromagnetic tare forces were measured at less than 9% of the thrust and the total thrust uncertainty at ≤ 10% of the thrust.

This paper presents a distributed data mining technique based on a multiagent environment, called SMAMDD (multiagent system for distributed data mining), which uses model integration. Model integration consists in the amalgamation of local models into a global, consistent one. In each subset, agents perform mining tasks locally and, afterwards, results are merged into a global model. In order to achieve that, agents cooperate by exchanging messages, aiming to improve the process of knowledge discover generating accurate results. The multiagent system for distributed data mining proposed in this paper has been compared with classical machine learning algorithms which are based on model integration as well, simulating a distributed environment. The results obtained show that SMAMDD can produce highly accurate data models

The total dose radiation response of nitrided and nonnitrided n-type 4H-SiC is reported for metal oxide semiconductor capacitors exposed to 10-keV X-rays under positive bias. The radiation response is affected strongly by differences in the SiC band gap and interface/near interface SiO2 trap density from typical Si MOS devices. Significantly higher net trapped positive charge densities were observed in nitrided n-SiC MOS capacitors compared to the non-nitrided samples. The mechanisms contributing to the differences in the charge trapping in these devices are discussed. Differences in the interfacial layer between SiO2/Si and SiO2/SiC are responsible for the observed dissimilarities in charge trapping behavior. © 2006 IEEE.

Intrinsic Optical Signal (IOS) imaging is a widely accepted technique for imaging brain activity. We propose an integrated device consisting of interleaved arrays of gallium arsenide (GaAs) based semiconductor light sources and detectors operating at telecommunications wavelengths in the near-infrared. Such a device will allow for long-term, minimally invasive monitoring of neural activity in freely behaving subjects, and will enable the use of structured illumination patterns to improve system performance. In this work we describe the proposed system and show that near-infrared IOS imaging at wavelengths compatible with semiconductor devices can produce physiologically significant images in mice, even through skull. © 2006 IEEE.

Plane parallel ionization chambers are an important tool for dosimetry and absolute calibration of electron beams used for radiotherapy. Most dosimetric protocols require corrections for recombination and polarity effects, which are to be determined experimentally as they depend on chamber design and radiation quality. Both effects were investigated in electron beams from a linear accelerator (Varian 21CD) for a set of four tissue equivalent plane parallel ionization chambers customized for the present research by Standard Imaging (Madison WI). All four chambers share the same design and air cavity dimensions, differing only in the diameter of their collecting electrode and the corresponding width of the guard ring. The diameters of the collecting electrodes were 2 mm, 4 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. Measurements were taken using electron beams of nominal energy 6 to 20 MeV in a 10 cm × 10 cm field size with a SSD of 100 cm at various depths in a Solid WaterR slab phantom. No significant variation of recombination effect was found with radiation quality, depth of measurement or chamber design. However, the polarity effect exceeded 5% for the chambers with small collecting electrode for an effective electron energy below 4 MeV at the point of measurement. The magnitude of the effect increased with decreasing electron energy in the phantom. The polarity correction factor calculated following AAPM protocol TG51 ranged from approximately 1.00 for the 20.0 mm chamber to less than 0.95 for the 2 mm chamber at 4.1cm depth in a electron beam of nominally 12 MeV. By inverting the chamber it could be shown that the polarity effect did not depend on the polarity of the electrode first traversed by the electron beam. Similarly, the introduction of an air gap between the overlying phantom layer and the chambers demonstrated that the angular distribution of the electrons at the point of measurement had a lesser effect on the polarity correction than the electron energy itself.
