We investigate the problem of automatically constructing efficient representations or basis functions for approximating value functions based on analyzing the structure and topology of the state space. In particular, two novel approaches to value function approximation are explored based on automatically constructing basis functions on state spaces that can be represented as graphs or manifolds: one approach uses the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, in effect performing a global Fourier analysis on the graph;the second approach is based on diffusion wavelets, which generalize classical wavelets to graphs using multiscale dilations induced by powers of a diffusion operator or random walk on the graph. Together, these approaches form the foundation of a new generation of methods for solving large Markov decision processes, in which the underlying representation and policies are simultaneously learned.

Novel ZnO nanostructures such as hollow nanospheres, nano-cuges, nanoneedles, tetrupods, nanowires, aligned nanorods and nanotubes are synthesized via thermal evaporation of ZnO and graphite powder mixtures in reduced oxygen atmosphere in the presence of argon and nitrogen flows, The ZnO nanostructures, especially nanospheres, have a unique shape and are hollow inside with walls densely decorated with aligned nanowires, Photoluminescence of synthesized ZnO structures measured at 300 K exhibits a strong near band edge peak at ∼380 nm and deep level green band centered at ∼550 nm. Fabricated ZnO structures can be studied for various applications in optoelectronics and sensors. © 2006 Materials Research Society.

Lumen-loading technology allows filler particles to be introduced exclusively into the lumens of the fibres while leaving the external surfaces free of filler. This study focuses on the development of lumen-loading process for the preparation of magnetic pulp. Magnetic pulp was prepared from unbleached kraft pulp lumen-loaded with magnetite (Fe3O4). Cationic polyethylenimine (PEI) or alum as retention aids in the lumen-loading process produced a better retention of the pigments in the preparation of this magnetic pulp. The physical properties of loading pup showed a decreased value as the filler content increased. The SEM picture showed the deposition of filler in the lumen.

With the rapid development of high-power white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), advances in packaging are required to further improve the device performance. In this work, an optimized packaging configuration for high power LED lamps with enhanced phosphorescence efficiency is presented based on ray-tracing simulations and experimental results. Figure 1 shows two phosphor arrangements, namely a "proximate phosphor" and a "remote phosphor" arrangement. The surface of the reflector cup is assumed to be either specular or diffuse. Three different encapsulant geometries, i.e., a "flat" (no cap), "convex" (spherical cap with height h = r/2), and "hemispherical" (h = r) top surface, are used in the simulations. Figure 2 shows phosphorescence efficiency with different packaging configurations obtained by ray-tracing simulation. The packaging configuration with remote phosphor, diffuse reflector cup and hemispherical encapsulation shows a 50% enhancement of phosphorescence efficiency compared to conventional packaging configuration. This improvement is attributed to reduced absorption of the phosphorescence by the LED chip and the reduction of deterministic optical modes trapped inside the encapsulant of remote-phosphor and diffuse reflector cup configuration. The angular dependence of the reflectivity for a diffuse Ag reflector and a specular Ag reflector is measured and shown in Figure 3. The roughened Ag reflector has a more than two orders of magnitude higher diffusely reflected power compared with the specular Ag reflector, which leads to the extraction of the trapped optical modes occurring in packaging structures with specular reflector cups. Dichromatic LED lamps comprising an ultraviolet GaN LED (λ = 400 nm) with a blue phosphor and a blue GaInN LED (λ = 470 nm) with a yellow phosphor are fabricated with different phosphor arrangements and reflector cups. OMG published a draft specification for a reliable ordered multicast inter-ORB protocol to be used by distributed applications developed in CORBA (ROMIOP). This specification was made to attend the demand of applications that needed more restrictive guarantees on reliability and ordering, since there already has a specification without these resources (UMIOP). This paper presents how ROMIOP was implemented, as well as modifications that were made on the specification to make possible to implement it according to the ETF (Extensible Transport Framework) specification. Performance measures were made comparing ROMIOP with others protocols, like UMIOP, to show its characteristics and its cost. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

OMG has published an unreliable multicast specification for distributed applications developed in CORBA (UMIOP). This mechanism can be implemented based on IP Multicast, a best-effort protocol, which provides no guarantees about the message delivery. However, many fault-tolerant or groupware applications demand more restrictive agreement and ordering guarantees (for instance, reliable multicast with FIFO, causal or total ordering) from the available support for group communication. OMG has not yet provided any specification for supporting those requirements. This paper presents an important contribution towards this direction. We proposed the ReMIOP, an extension to the UMIOP/OMG protocol, for the conception of a reliable multicast mechanism in CORBA middleware. Performance measures comparing ReMIOP, UMIOP and UDP sockets for IP multicast communication are presented in order to evidence the costs for adding reliable and unreliable multicast in middleware level. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents the novel insight that the SLAM information matrix is exactly sparse in a delayed-state framework. Such a framework is used in view-based representations of the environment which rely upon scan-matching raw sensor data. Scan-matching raw data results in virtual observations of robot motion with respect to a place its previously been. The exact sparseness of the delayed-state information matrix is in contrast to other recent feature-based SLAM information algorithms like Sparse Extended Information Filters or Thin Junction Tree Filters. These methods have to make approximations in order to force the feature-based SLAM information matrix to be sparse. The benefit of the exact sparseness of the delayed-state framework is that it allows one to take advantage of the information space parameterization without having to make any approximations. Therefore, it can produce equivalent results to the "full-covariance" solution. ©2005 IEEE.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the design and implementation of GISolve - a Grid-based problem solving environment for computationally intensive geographic information analysis based on geo-middleware. The geo-middleware resides between existing Grid middleware and geographic information analysis applications to manage heterogeneous and dynamic resources on behalf of analysis applications. At the same time, GISolve provides adaptive domain decomposition solutions to parallel geographic information analysis applications. Based on these domain decomposition solutions, GISolve also schedules distributed tasks and manages data transfers. In GISolve, these capabilities are designed as Grid services that are compliant with the open Grid service architecture (OGSA) and are implemented using Grid portal technologies. The GISolve implementation is illustrated based on a case study of a computationally intensive spatial statistic - [Gi(d)] that is used to assess spatial dependence among geographically distributional observations. © 2005 IEEE.
