Discrete Trail Training (DTT) is an intervention method used by behaviour analysts for teaching skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) around a table using physical materials and artefacts. Traditional DTT suffers from these main challenges: inconsistency due to human limitations;need for repeatedly focusing child's attention on the trail at hand as children with ASD suffer from short attention spans;and disruptions on account of in-session data recording and analysis by the analysts while delivering the training. Developed in collaboration with HCI and behaviour analysis experts, our proposed solution is an interactive, tabletop software application that provides the consistency and integrity that DTT aims to achieve, while engaging the child's attention on the interactive interface, and seamlessly collecting and analysing in-session data in the background. Upcoming usability evaluations of the prototype promise to provide insight into the potential effectiveness of our prototype. © 2014, Australian computer Society, Inc.

The representation of a real scenario through a 3D virtual environment populated by autonomous agents has several applications, such as games or animation movies. Such representation can be a difficult and complex task, since natural scenarios are composed by forms with a lot of details that should be reproduced realistically in the virtual world. Moreover, virtual people should understand and consider the virtual world for navigation similarly to real people. In this paper we describe a model to provide motion of groups of characters based on terrain reasoning in 3D virtual worlds. The model starts with the terrain generation process using height maps in a pseudo-infinite world, followed by the simulation of characters movement generated through an space colonization algorithm. Finally, the visualization of characters motion in the 3D terrain can be produced.

Real-time logic (RTL) [1, 2, 3] is useful for the verification of a safety assertion with respect to the specification of a real-time system. Since the satisfiability problem for RTL is undecidable, the systematic debugging of a real-time system appears impossible. This paper provides a first step towards this challenge. With RTL, each propositional formula corresponds to a verification condition. The number of truth assignments of a propositional formula helps to determine the timing constraints which should be added or modified to the system's specification. We have implemented a tool (called SDRTL, [4]) that is able to perform systematic debugging. The confidence of our approach is high as we have evaluated SDRTL on several existing industrial-based applications. © 2005 IEEE.

In the realm of music AI, arranging rich and structured multi-track accompaniments from a simple lead sheet presents significant challenges. Such challenges include maintaining track cohesion, ensuring long-term coherence, and optimizing computational efficiency. In this paper, we introduce a novel system that leverages prior modelling over disentangled style factors to address these challenges. Our method presents a two-stage process: initially, a piano arrangement is derived from the lead sheet by retrieving piano texture styles;subsequently, a multi-track orchestration is generated by infusing orchestral function styles into the piano arrangement. Our key design is the use of vector quantization and a unique multi-stream Transformer to model the long-term flow of the orchestration style, which enables flexible, controllable, and structured music generation. Experiments show that by factorizing the arrangement task into interpretable sub-stages, our approach enhances generative capacity while improving efficiency. Additionally, our system supports a variety of music genres and provides style control at different composition hierarchies. We further show that our system achieves superior coherence, structure, and overall arrangement quality compared to existing baselines. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable instruction-following capabilities and achieved impressive performances in various applications. However, the performances of LLMs depend heavily on the instructions given to them, which are typically manually tuned with substantial human efforts. Recent work has used the query-efficient Bayesian optimization (BO) algorithm to automatically optimize the instructions given to black-box LLMs. However, BO usually falls short when optimizing highly sophisticated (e.g., high-dimensional) objective functions, such as the functions mapping an instruction to the performance of an LLM. This is mainly due to the limited expressive power of the Gaussian process (GP) which is used by BO as a surrogate to model the objective function. Meanwhile, it has been repeatedly shown that neural networks (NNs), especially pre-trained transformers, possess strong expressive power and can model highly complex functions. So, we adopt a neural bandit algorithm which replaces the GP in BO by an NN surrogate to optimize instructions for black-box LLMs. More importantly, the neural bandit algorithm allows us to naturally couple the NN surrogate with the hidden representation learned by a pre-trained transformer (i.e., an open-source LLM), which significantly boosts its performance. These motivate us to propose our INSTruction optimization usIng Neural bandits Coupled with Transformers (INSTINCT) algorithm. We perform instruction optimization for ChatGPT and use extensive experiments to show that INSTINCT consistently outperforms baselines in different tasks, e.g., various instruction induction tasks and the task of improving zero-shot chain-of-thought instructions. Significant investments are being made into distance education programs around the world. Yet there is no clear understanding of the effectiveness of such programs, or what makes a distance education program successful. This is in part because the analysis of a distance education program involves studying the behaviour of a complex interactive system. It is therefore worthwhile identifying a suitable tool for a theoretical study of such systems. One such tool is system dynamics modeling, a powerful approach to understand the behaviour of a complex system over time. In this paper, we present a system dynamics simulation model of a distance education program at a leading engineering institute in India. We describe how the model is constructed from the individual components of the program and how a system dynamics approach is used to analyze the program. The results of the simulations helped us plan future investments of the distance education program. Copyright 2010 ACM.

The research in the field of ergonomics can contribute to the design process of Assistive Technologies using objective and subjective data measurements. The auxiliary crutches are assistive devices commonly used in the process of rehabilitation after lower-extremity injuries. However, for many subjects, walking with crutches in not an easy and comfortable task, as the loads on the upper limbs are substantial and expose the users to potentially harmful long-term effects. In this way, the objective of this study was, first, to report the evaluation of the user-crutch interface by using an objective measurement of the subjects’ muscular activity and exertion perception, and to discuss how objective data measured from the subjects can contribute for the design of the interface. Eleven able-bodied subjects participated. The test protocol consisted of 3 trials of walking with crutches, each one with a different hand diameter, namely 20 mm, 32 mm and 40 mm. Surface electromyography of forearms muscles was collected, and perceived exertion was measured using the Borg’s Scale. The mean of maximum EMG values showed that the highest values activity happened in the extensor digitorum muscle using the largest handles. However, the smallest handles increase electromyography activity in the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. Statistically significant difference was found between the smaller and the larger handle diameter. The analysis of exertion perception did not show statistical difference in any of the situations investigated. Handle diameter was shown to be a factor affecting the biomechanics of the walking with crutches. In addition, ergonomic evaluation can provide objective measurements that, ultimately, May be applied in the improvement of user-product interface.

This paper addresses the task of temporal activity localization (TAL). Although recent works have made significant progress in TAL research, almost all of them implicitly assume that the dense frame-level correspondences in each video-query pair are correctly annotated. However, in reality, such an assumption is extremely expensive and even impossible to satisfy due to subjective labeling. To alleviate this issue, in this paper, we explore a new TAL setting termed Noisy Temporal activity localization (NTAL), where a TAL model should be robust to the mixed training data with noisy moment boundaries. Inspired by the memorization effect of neural networks, we propose a novel method called Co-Teaching Regularizer (CTR) for NTAL. Specifically, we first learn a Gaussian Mixture Model to divide the mixed training data into preliminary clean and noisy subsets. Subsequently, we refine the labels of the two subsets by an adaptive prediction function so that their true positive and false positive samples could be identified. To avoid single model being prone to its mistakes learned by the mixed data, we adopt a co-teaching paradigm, which utilizes two models sharing the same framework to teach each other for robust learning. A curriculum strategy is further introduced to gradually learn the moment confidence from easy to hard. Experiments on three datasets demonstrate that our CTR is significantly more robust to the noisy training data compared to the existing methods. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association: CC BY-NC 4.0.

In this paper we present a platform called VhCVE, in which relevant issues related to Collaborative Virtual Environments applications are integrated. The main goal is to provide a framework where participants can interact with others by voice and chat. Also, manipulation tools such as a mouse using computer Vision and Physics are included, as well as rendering techniques (e.g. light sources, shadows and weather effects). In addition, avatar animation in terms of face and body motion are provided. Results indicate that our platform can be used as a interactive virtual world to help communication among people. © 2009 IEEE.

High Performance Computing (HPC) is usually used to solve problems that cannot be solved on a single machine due to constraints in computing resources such as memory and number of processor in science and technology. The speed of processing can be improved through HPC. However, the use of high-powered supercomputer for this type of problems involves huge cost. In some circumstances, High-Throughput Computing (HTC) on distributed environments performs parallel processing with speed that are comparable to supercomputer. In this work, we improve the time and speed in mining process for developing a classification modeling for a large data file on distributed environments via a web-based portal that provides various classification methods. The web-based application was build using PHP language, and adapt combination of data mining software WEKA version 3.6.0 of classification techniques with split percentage of training and testing data. HTCondor middleware is used to control and run all jobs on distributed environment. The results show significant improvement in processing time.
