In this paper, we have presented the design and invention of an electronic nose (E-nose) that can work and analyze the results via a network system such as LAN or WiFi. The MWCNTs/polymer composites were used as a gas sensor array. The constant current circuit was newly designed for gas sensor measurement. The fabricated E-nose showed a high performance for indoor air monitoring with very low noise.

Surveillance and diagnosis of new and emerging communicable diseases in remote regions, such as the Amazon, is a challenging task. These regions can be difficult to reach, are sparsely populated, and have limited medical and ICT infrastructure. Medical practitioners and community health agents who work in such regions often have very basic qualifications, and therefore have limited knowledge of new and emerging diseases. The increasing capabilities of mobile devices, such as tablets and smart phones, have made them a useful platform for delivery of medical services in remote locations. In this paper we introduce a system that could potentially support diagnosis of vector-borne diseases such as Bartonellosis and Leishmaniasis in areas where specialist healthcare is scarce. In particular, we focus on the image analysis and classification component of this system, which aims to reduce the chance of misdiagnosing these less common diseases as malaria. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Information visualisation methods can potentially be employed to assist the work of epidemiologists and other health care professionals in mapping the spread of communicable diseases in remote areas, where the task of disease surveillance encompasses temporal elements such as changes in climate, land use and population movements. This paper presents an investigation into the use of time-based visualisation techniques coupled with geographical maps and support for distributed mobile collection of patient data. This study has focused on the development of an information visualisation prototype designed for use by epidemiology researchers on mobile platforms (tablets and smart phones). The prototyping activity has involved the participation of prospective users working in the Amazon region. Initial results are presented and discussed. © 2012 IEEE.

There is an increasing desire to remain connected when physically distant and computer-mediated communication (CMC) is one means of satisfying this desire. In particular, there is a growing trend for individuals to use commercially available technology to connect with friends and family in social and leisure settings. Drawing on this trend, performative arts and existing telecommunications research, we identify the social practice of sharing a meal together as ripe for reinterpretation within CMC. We explore the opportunities to design a technology platform that supports remote guests in experiencing togetherness and playfulness within the practices of a traditional dinner party. Through both visual and aural channels as well as remote agency, the dinner guests were able to share a holistic telematic dining experience comparable to a traditional co-presence dinner. Based on the findings, we propose that one must consider the social structure and cultural background of users to inform the design of a technological intervention. © 2012 ACM.

More and more serious global warming boosters the research on environmental protection from both the industries and academia. The collection of environmental data is a basic block for the environmental protection. Due to the mobility and the release of stringent power constraints, vehicular sensor networks (VSN) provides an efficient way to collect environmental data. However, many existing work on the application of VSN in the environmental protection focuses on using the collected data to generate the environmental report. The increasing popularity of social networks motivates our interests in providing more innovative applications by integrating the VSN with social networks. In this paper, we intro-duce the structure of the integrated system, discuss the applications and the challenging issues.

Open source software (OSS) has affected organizations and communities in many ways since it was introduced. OSS makes a significant impact on software development strategies and adoption in many organizations. OSS was used in software development in order to reduce cost, provide shorter time-to-market, and increase productivity. However, the documents needed in software engineering process for OSS development are often missing. Without these documents, software developers may have to take more time to modify available source code and it may increase the risk of misunderstandings. Therefore, the research reported here proposes a packaging support system for OSS in order to reduce these problems. The preliminary evaluation of system performance was conducted in our laboratory by the selected subjects acting as two groups of users: members and administrators. The results of system evaluation in term of users' satisfaction, using Likert scale, were rated as good quality (averaged 4.2) and very good quality (averaged 4.86) by members and administrators respectively.

Playing an instrument is a physical skill learned through observation, repetition and rehearsal. Students of orchestral instruments seek one-to-one tuition from expert musicians. However as they become more accomplished, the number of suitable tutors becomes more concentrated, especially for less common instruments. Often a tutor-student relationship develops over several years and temporary separation due to overseas performing, auditioning and teaching commitments is problematic. Some music education organisations use video conferencing as a solution to these problems, however it has long been recognised that interaction mediated by video conferencing is not analogous to a co-present experience. In this paper, ethnographic video analysis is used to study the interactions in co-present and separated instrumental music lessons. We find that the musical score represents more than a physical embodiment of the music - it plays an important role in coordinating activity and interaction. In video mediated lessons a single physical score can no longer be shared and interaction is changed as a result. © CogSci *** rights reserved.

In this paper, we have developed a low-cost sleep monitoring system for patient based on polysomnography which will be useful for patient communication with healthcare personals and/or relatives. In particular, we have presented the sensor pillow and bed sheet system that employs wireless networks based on low-cost ZigBee technology and a sensor array of force sensitive resistors (FSR) based on polymer thick film (PTF) device, for classifying and specifically verifying the respiration rate during sleep. This paper also proposes a simple motion model that explains the change of head and body pressure distribution. In addition, we can detect some physiological parameters during the sleep stages and wakefulness as well as record respiration rate as related to different physiological factors. The integration of this sensor system and wireless technology with computer software could make this healthcare monitoring system a commercial product valuable for point-of-care applications.
