The growing energy demands of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems have made energy efficiency a critical concern for system developers and operators. However, HPC users are generally less aware of how these energy concerns influence the design, deployment, and operation of supercomputers even though they experience the consequences. This paper examines the implications of HPC’s energy consumption, providing an overview of current trends aimed at improving energy efficiency. We describe how hardware innovations such as energy-efficient processors, novel system architectures, power management techniques, and advanced scheduling policies do have a direct impact on how applications need to be programmed and executed on HPC systems. For application developers, understanding how these new systems work and how to analyse and report the performances of their own software is critical in the dialog with HPC system designers and administrators. The paper aims to raise awareness about energy efficiency among users, particularly in the high energy physics and astrophysics domains, offering practical advice on how to analyse and optimise applications to reduce their energy consumption without compromising on performance. Towards reaping the benefits provided by conversational systems, conversational systems in form of chatbots have been deployed to provide different kinds of services in different countries of the world. However, government-based services to the citizens are limited. Consequently, there is a need to know the level of the adoption of this technology in Nigeria so as for the stakeholders to be guided as per the line of action to be taken in reaping the benefit of the technology being usable to bridge the digital divide prevalent in the country. This work therefore investigated the level of adoption of conversational systems - both text-based and voice-based by the various governments in Nigeria. In carrying out the investigations, the websites of the various state governments were visited and searched, for text-based and voice-based conversational systems as well as the availability of any chatting facilities. The results obtained show that even though the vast majority of the state governments have web presence, conversational systems are generally not available. Only three states have chatting facilities;two are text-based and one has a chatting interface that is really not a conversational system. None has voice-based conversational system and two states from the North Central zone have no web presence at all. Consequently, governments need to adopt the usage of conversational systems in order to make services more available in different modes for the benefits of the mases and to reach the unreached. The North central states specifically also need to fully have web presence like the others in the remaining geo-political zones. © 2023 ACM.

High Performance Computing (HPC) is usually used to solve problems that cannot be solved on a single machine due to constraints in computing resources such as memory and number of processor in science and technology. The speed of processing can be improved through HPC. However, the use of high-powered supercomputer for this type of problems involves huge cost. In some circumstances, High-Throughput Computing (HTC) on distributed environments performs parallel processing with speed that are comparable to supercomputer. In this work, we improve the time and speed in mining process for developing a classification modeling for a large data file on distributed environments via a web-based portal that provides various classification methods. The web-based application was build using PHP language, and adapt combination of data mining software WEKA version 3.6.0 of classification techniques with split percentage of training and testing data. HTCondor middleware is used to control and run all jobs on distributed environment. The results show significant improvement in processing time. © 2013 IEEE.

After persistent practices during the 1990's, using open system and interoperability middleware idea to integrate large scale computer systems has been the agreeable fact. With the development of wireless network and collaboration technology, the challenge of traditional open system and its middleware is met and new standard and technology are needed to embody high intelligent collaboration and mobility in the open system. Somebody tries all the new protocol such as I-TCP (Indirect Transport control protocol) to achieve these goals, but it is not realistic and it cannot integrate legacy systems. Somebody changes traditional middleware such as CORBA (Common object request broker architecture) to support transparency in wireless environment, but it is still traditional Client/Server computing mode and of low efficiency. In this paper, the new mechanism based on mobile agent and wireless CORBA is proposed. MASIF (Mobile agent system interoperability facility) and wireless CORBA specification are adopted to achieve high efficiency and interoperability in nomadic network, and mobile agent's mobility and its ACL (Agent communication language) is used to achieve high collaboration in lined network. ABCBA (Agent based computing basic architecture) and its excellent properties such as intelligence and high efficiency are mainly focused. In the end, some experiments and conclusions are presented.

Computational clusters have become a dominant platform for a wide range of applications in scientific disciplines, engineering and commerce. This is due to their low cost, high performance, availability of off-the-shelf hardware components and freely accessible software tools that can be used for developing cluster applications. To manage, monitor and administer all the nodes in a cluster environment, a specific system known as Cluster Control System (CCS) is required. Even though there are numerous systems available, most of it are developed specifically for in-house use such as scientific research or commercial purpose. In this paper, we discuss a prototype and architecture of UKM Cluster Control and Management (UKM C2M) system that we developed using open source software. The UKM C2M has six modules namely a switch manager, program manager, report manager, user manager and administrator manager. This module allows an administrator to manage, monitor and administrate all the nodes in the cluster concurrently and effectively. The main purpose of developing UKM C2M is to provide a lightweight system for managing clusters effectively. In this work, we included a report manager that is not available in many CCS to keep track, collect and generate node information continuously for later retrieval. These information can be archived in secondary storage or printed as a hardcopy. The overall design of UKM C2M is described and the details on each of the six modules is presented in this paper. © 2011 IEEE.

Arrays of gate-defined semiconductor quantum dots are among the leading candidates for building scalable quantum processors. High-fidelity initialization, control, and readout of spin qubit registers require exquisite and targeted control over key Hamiltonian parameters that define the electrostatic environment. However, due to the tight gate pitch, capacitive crosstalk between gates hinders independent tuning of chemical potentials and interdot couplings. While virtual gates offer a practical solution, determining all the required cross-capacitance matrices accurately and efficiently in large quantum dot registers is an open challenge. Here, we establish a modular automated virtualization system (MAViS)—a general and modular framework for autonomously constructing a complete stack of multilayer virtual gates in real time. Our method employs machine learning techniques to rapidly extract features from two-dimensional charge stability diagrams. We then utilize computer vision and regression models to self-consistently determine all relative capacitive couplings necessary for virtualizing plunger and barrier gates in both low- and high-tunnel-coupling regimes. Using MAViS, we successfully demonstrate accurate virtualization of a dense two-dimensional array comprising ten quantum dots defined in a high-quality Ge/SiGe heterostructure. Our work offers an elegant and practical solution for the efficient control of large-scale semiconductor quantum dot systems.

Air pollution is known to cause adverse effects on human health. While pidemiological studies generally involve statistical/geographical approaches, the use of computer algorithms is yet uncommon. In this study, the K-Maximum Sub-array (K-MSA) algorithm is introduced for the first time in health and environmental science to analyse the association between particulate air pollution with diameter less than 10 μm (PM10), from four years of daily measurements (1998-2002), and acute respiratory hospital admission counts over a wide range of age groups (0 to 98 years) in Christchurch, New Zealand. The morbidity rate was taken from residents within a 2 km diameter of the air pollution monitoring site, located in a residential area. The K-MSA algorithm identifies K maximum threshold values, e.g., what age groups associate most with specific ranges of [PM10] levels, by maximizing the sum of the elements of a selected sub-array of a two-dimensional array. The K-MSA successfully detects that the associations with different [PM10] levels vary between different age groups, and that responses even differ between sexes, and different time period (winter, summer or all seasons). The K-MSA will be an encouraging methodology to investigate how various air pollution levels are related to health or climate in the future to increase knowledge for future air pollution policy making. There are many different methods for analysing user research data in user-centred design. One method is to create personas. Personas are fictive characters with a name and a face. They are based on data about the users, and designers and other stakeholders can engage in them and empathize with them as a proxy for the actual users. Personas are communication tools that make it easier for a large group of developers and designers to focus on a shared view of whom the design is for. There are different ways of creating personas, including analysis of behavioural variables and goals, thematic analysis, and mixing qualitative and quantitative methods. Creating personas relies heavily on the expertise of the user researcher and others in the design team. The creation of personas could potentially benefit from crowdsourcing the analysis of user data and hence counteract the subjectivity inherent in persona creation. The aim of this case study is to tentatively explore the possibilities and difficulties of crowdsourcing persona creation facilitated by the repertory grid technique (RGT). RGT is a mixed-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative data and we used it to investigate individual participants' view on the summaries and the views of the pool of participants. It is a method derived from personal construct theory (PCP), in which an individual is posed to have personal theories and expectations that direct how he or she views things (in this case a number of interview summaries). In the context of user research, we call the method User Repertory Grids. We had 28 participants in our crowdsourced analysis of five summarized user interviews. The participants' personal constructs of the summarized interviews were elicited. We then visualized the results in Bertin plots and biplots, and we calculated the importance and dominance of the constructs. This paper presents a model for generating 2D cracks in real-time for application in games and cartoon animations. Cracks are generated based on a method previously used for leaf venation patterns. We describe a procedural model to generate cracks that can be customized for application in games, generating different visual results depending on interactive parameters. Results were visually evaluated by users and indicate that hypothesis to adopt leaf venation patterns to generate cracks is valid and possible for interactive applications. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a procedural model for ocean breaking waves in real time. Since the growth of digital games, more ocean, coast and beach scenarios have appeared, but these games rarely use breaking waves. The model proposed in this paper aims to animate waves with minimal graphic processing unit (GPU) and computer processing unit (CPU) costs. Using a few set of parameters, our procedural model generates an unique ocean-like scenario. This model could be employed in several types of games and applications. Results indicate that our real time breaking waves are visually accepted and have minimal impact on application performance. © 2010 IEEE.
