This paper presents a model for generating 2D cracks in real-time for application in games and cartoon animations. Cracks are generated based on a method previously used for leaf venation patterns. We describe a procedural model to generate cracks that can be customized for application in games, generating different visual results depending on interactive parameters. Results were visually evaluated by users and indicate that hypothesis to adopt leaf venation patterns to generate cracks is valid and possible for interactive applications.

This paper presents a procedural model for ocean breaking waves in real time. Since the growth of digital games, more ocean, coast and beach scenarios have appeared, but these games rarely use breaking waves. The model proposed in this paper aims to animate waves with minimal graphic processing unit (GPU) and computer processing unit (CPU) costs. Using a few set of parameters, our procedural model generates an unique ocean-like scenario. This model could be employed in several types of games and applications. Results indicate that our real time breaking waves are visually accepted and have minimal impact on application performance.

Significant investments are being made into distance education programs around the world. Yet there is no clear understanding of the effectiveness of such programs, or what makes a distance education program successful. This is in part because the analysis of a distance education program involves studying the behaviour of a complex interactive system. It is therefore worthwhile identifying a suitable tool for a theoretical study of such systems. One such tool is system dynamics modeling, a powerful approach to understand the behaviour of a complex system over time. In this paper, we present a system dynamics simulation model of a distance education program at a leading engineering institute in India. We describe how the model is constructed from the individual components of the program and how a system dynamics approach is used to analyze the program. The results of the simulations helped us plan future investments of the distance education program. Copyright 2010 ACM.

An electronic nose (e-nose) system based on polymer/carboxylic-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs-COOH) was developed for sensing various volatile amines such as dimethylamine, dipropylamine, pyridine, and ammonia solution. The SWNTs-COOH were dispersed in the matrix of different polymers; polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cumene terminated polystyrene-co-maleic anhydride (cumene-PSMA), poly(styrene-co-maleic acid) partial isobutyl/methyl mixed ester (PSE), and polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP). These composites were dropped on interdigitated gold electrodes to make the gas sensors. The response of these sensors to volatile amines was studied by both static and dynamic flow measurement. By using a simple pattern recognition based on the principle component analysis (PCA), the volatile amines can be discriminated. This e-nose will be useful for monitoring the freshness of foods and farm air quality.

Real-time localization of eyes and eyebrows in video sequences can find several applications in nowadays. However, this task is still a challenge, mainly if we consider images of low quality as those achieved by web cams. This paper describes a methodology to accurately detect meaningful feature points in eyes and eyebrows of people in frontal pose, in images captured by web cams. Also it discusses the mapping of the movement of the eyes of a real person to an avatar, in order to provide Performance Driven Animation (PDA). Furthermore, this paper presents obtained results and the limitations of the proposed methodology.
This paper presents a model to generate personalized facial animations for avatars using Performance Driven Animation (PDA). This approach allows the users to reflect their face expressions in his/her avatar, consider...
