In this paper we present a platform called VhCVE, in which relevant issues related to Collaborative Virtual Environments applications are integrated. The main goal is to provide a framework where participants can interact with others by voice and chat. Also, manipulation tools such as a mouse using computer Vision and Physics are included, as well as rendering techniques (e.g. light sources, shadows and weather effects). In addition, avatar animation in terms of face and body motion are provided. Results indicate that our platform can be used as a interactive virtual world to help communication among people.

Students in software engineering need experiences that prepare them for a global work environment that is more and more likely to be structured around team work in which team members may come from a variety of disciplines and cultures and be geographically dispersed. New grads in software engineering are more and more likely to communicate with team members and managers solely via electronic means (e.g. teleconference, videoconference, e-mail, e-file sharing). This paper describes a highly successful international collaboration of students from two universities enrolled in undergraduate software engineering classes, one in the USA and the other in India. Within a semester, these students collaborated remotely to produce software for a leading international software development company. This collaboration, repeated for two semesters and planned for a third, met all learning objectives while successfully producing the desired software. This experience truly engaged our students and enabled the students to learn via a standard course in software engineering about many aspects of professional practice without resorting to special programs like co-op/internships, honors/research independent study, or capstones.

Attribute selection (AS) is known to help improve the results of algorithmic learning processes by selecting fewer, but predictive, input attributes. This study introduces a new ranking filter AS method, the tree node selection (TNS) method. The idea of TNS is to determine significant but fewer attributes by searching through the pre-generated decision tree as information source in the manner of a pruning process. To test the performance of TNS, 33 benchmark datasets (UCI) with various numbers of instances, attributes and classes were investigated along with five known AS methods, and the results were tested with the C4.5 (unpruned) and naive Bayes classifiers. The performance, in terms of classification accuracy improvement, reduction in the number of attributes and the size of the generated decision tree are assessed by various statistical analyses for multiple comparisons. TNS was found to provide the most consistent performance for C4.5 and naive Bayes classifiers, and generated unpruned C4.5 trees with selected fewer attributes were generally found to achieve similar quality to pruned C4.5 trees without any attribute selection.

In the current decade, substantial growth in number of wireless sensor network deployments to sense a wide array of data ranging from environmental to healthcare is observed. As these WSNs are designed with the goal to serve their own organisation without futuristic idea of sharing the data with others, their architectures pose a limitation to the purpose of collaboration. A design is presented in this paper to create stack of services, interfaces and repositories for a standard WSN set-up to support collaboration which will enable data sharing in efficient way. With the help of proposed architecture, the service brokers, federal agencies and individuals can make use of these services to enrich their understanding of geo-spatial and temporal behaviour of the sensed data. The SOA comes as the ready to use technological standard to implement the stack and its invocation.
