This volume contains the 37 papers presented at the 9th International Con- rence on Real-Time and Embedded Computing Systems and Applications (RT- CSA 2003). RTCSA is an international conference organized for scientists and researchers from both academia and industry to hold intensive discussions on advancing technologies topics on real-time systems, embedded systems, ubiq- tous/pervasive computing, and related topics. RTCSA 2003 was held at the Department of Electrical Engineering of National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Paper submissions were well distributed over the various aspects of real-time computing and embedded system technologies. There were more than 100 participants from all over the world. The papers, including 28 regular papers and 9 short papers are grouped into thecategoriesofscheduling,networkingandcommunication,embeddedsystems, pervasive/ubiquitous computing, systems and architectures, resource mana- ment, ?le systems and databases, performance analysis, and tools and de- lopment. The grouping is basically in accordance with the conference program. Earlier versions of these papers were published in the conference proceedings. However, some papers in this volume have been modi?ed or improved by the authors, in various aspects, based on comments and feedback received at the conference. It is our sincere hope that researchers and developers will bene?t from these papers. We would like to thank all the authors of the papers for their contribution. We thank the members of the program committee and the reviewers for their excellent work in evaluating the submissions. In order for mobile ad-hoc networks (manets) to be a viable alternative to infrastructured wired and wireless networks, efficient reliable multicast protocols need to be established. In this paper, we propose a Robust Multicast Routing algorithm (RoMR), for ad-hoc networks. In order to increase reliability, RoMR builds multiple trees from a sender to each of the receivers in the multicast group. A novel technique to predict the likelihood that a link will continue to exist into the next time span is based on successive power levels of the received signal from neighboring nodes. These predictions are used during the creation of the multicast trees. Another unique aspect of RoMR is that links that are predicted to be less prone to failure than other links may be shared among several trees. Forward error correcting coding techniques reduce the total number of extra packets added to the original data packets from the source into the network increasing the efficiency of protocol.

ATM being a connection-oriented technology, there will be a need for connection-oriented service on LANs to be able to provide seamless internetworking between LANs and ATM broadband networks. We present a general technique to provide connection-oriented service on LANs and then show how this technique is incorporated into a recently designed multimedia LAN (MLAN) protocol. The Pesticide Identification Assistant (PIA) is a knowledge-based system designed to assist an analytical chemist with the identification of pesticide residues in food products using gas-liquid chromatography. The data are in the form of retention times and detector responses for a particular sample. The PIA system aids the analytic chemist in identifying the corresponding residue. The system has four goals: simplify routine analysis; provide interactive training for new analysts; provide an infallible memory supplement for experienced analysts; and provide a means of capturing expertise vulnerable to loss through retirement. A description is given of the problem domain and implementation concerns are addressed, particularly knowledge representation, inference techniques and user interface design. Particular challenges posed by the problem domain, particularly in the area of uncertainty, are considered. Plans for expansion and further research with the system are indicated.< >
