Knowledge plays a central role in intelligent systems. Manual knowledge acquisition is very inefficient and expensive. In this paper, we present (1) an automatic method to acquire a large amount of lexical-dependency knowledge, and (2) an innovative knowledge representation model to effectively minimize the impact of noise and improve knowledge quality. We also propose a new type of knowledge base evaluation-extrinsic evaluation, which evaluates knowledge by its impact to an external application. In our experiments we adopt word sense disambiguation (WSD) as the extrinsic evaluation measure. Due to the lack of sufficient knowledge, existing WSD methods either are brittle and only capable of processing a limited number of topics or words, or provide only mediocre performance in real-world settings. With the support of acquired knowledge, our unsupervised WSD system significantly outperformed the best unsupervised systems participating in SemEval 2007, and achieved the disambiguation accuracy approaching top-performing supervised systems.

A framework for modeling, analyzing and synthesizing nuclear safeguards information with various uncertainties is proposed by using a newly developed belief rule-base inference methodology (RIMER). After a hierarchical analysis of States' nuclear activities on the basis of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) physical model, the multi-layer structure of the evaluation model for States' nuclear activities is outlined. The special emphasis is given to the synthesis and evaluation analysis of the physical model indicator information by RIMER, which handles hybrid uncertain information in nuclear safeguards evaluation process. The proposed framework illustrates and clarifies the inference and synthesis formalism from a case study of nuclear safeguards information evaluation.

Based on the researches of LSB (least significant bit, i.e. the last bit of a binary pixel value) matching steganographic method and the steganalytic method which aims at histograms of cover images, this paper proposes a new LSB matching steganographic method. A steganographic information table is defined to record the changes which are introduced by the embedded secrete bits. According to the table, the next LSB which has the same pixel value will be judged to add or subtract one dynamically in order to ensure the histogram's change of cover image is minimized. Therefore, the modified method improves steganographic security and is less vulnerability to attacks compared with LSB matching. The experimental results show that the histograms maintain their attributes, such as peak values and alternative trends, in an acceptable degree and have better performance than LSB matching in the respects of histogram distortion and resistance against existing steganalysis.

In recent years, GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) has become an import accelerator for conventional applications. User has to program in GPU-based environments, such as CUDA, and it usually requires detailed tuning for good performances. Also since GPU has high Single Precision (SP) performance while its Double Precision (DP) performance falls short, it has limited application in scientific computing. In this paper, our algorithm aims at accelerating the solving of dense linear equation on hybrid CPU-GPU system. We adopt iterative refinement to utilize the high SP capability of GPUs while achieving DP precision requirements. Specifically, we implement algorithm with utilize both GPU and CPU for computation-intensive parts by overlapping computations. Its performance reaches up to 236 GFLOP/s, which is by far better than the result achieved by DP-only algorithms.
