In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

In this paper, a software system for supporting stenting in the vascular domain is presented. The system covers all treatment phases from diagnosis to follow-up examinations. During the preoperative phase, the system supports the physician by suggesting the date and the kind (open surgery, minimally invasive) of intervention based on segmenting the patient's CT data. Therapy planning is additionally supported by a computer-aided stent simulation. Using virtual stenting, it is possible to simulate stents of different manufacturers in the preoperative CT data of the patient. As a result, it can be decided whether a chosen stent has proper dimensions and should be used during the following intervention. The intraoperative phase is supported by visualizing the selected stent from the planning phase at the requested position. After stenting, regular follow-up examinations are necessary to detect stent migration and endoleaks. These time-consuming procedures are also supported by the developed system.

The field of systems biology focuses on creating a finely detailed picture of biological mechanisms. Recently, the need has arisen for more and more sophisticated and math.matically well founded computational tools, capable of analyzing those models that are and will be at the core of Systems Biology. The challenge consists in faithfully implementing such computational models in software packages exploiting the potential trade-offs among usability, accuracy, and scalability when dealing with large amounts of data. The aim of this presentation is that of introducing some emerging problems and proposed solutions in this context. In particular, after an introductory first part, in the second part we will focus on the use of Hybrid Systems in Systems Biology. Hybrid systems are dynamical systems presenting both discrete and continuous evolution, originally proposed to study embedded systems, where a discrete control acts on a continuously changing environment. The presence of both discrete and continuous dynamics makes this formalism appealing also for modeling biological systems. However, the situation in this case is subtler, basically because there is no "natural" separation of discrete and continuous components. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Hybrid Systems have been used in Systems Biology in rather various ways. Some approaches, like the description of biological switches, concentrate on the use of model-checking routines. Other applications, like the switching between continuous and discrete/stochastic simulation, focus on the exploitation of the interplay between discreteness and continuity in order to reduce the computational burden of numerical simulation, yet maintaining an acceptable precision. We will survey some of the main uses of Hybrid Automata in Systems Biology, through a series of cases studies that we deem interesting and paradigmatic, discussing both actual and foreseeable, logical and implementation issues. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heide

Particle Swarm Optimization with Turbulence (PSOT) is, in this paper, applied to find out fuzzy models to represent dynamic behavior of space systems that lie underneath the space qualification process. In optimization area, each minimal improvement in results may represents a maximal, precious meaning and PSOT improve the performance of the established Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) by introducing a slight variation, which simulates the action of an atmosphere turbulence to escape from local minima. This paper trades off the results of original PSO presented in a previous paper and PSOT both intertwined with Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy modeling dealing with experimental results of a thermal-vacuum system. Particle Swarm Optimization with turbulence has demonstrated to be a good alternative by taking into account the velocity of convergence to better solution and the total optimization time in generating dynamical models to the proposed system.

The Sort Transform (ST) can significantly speed up the block sorting phase of the Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) by sorting only limited order contexts. However, the best result obtained so far for the inverse ST has a time complexity O(N log k) and a space complexity O(N), where N and k are the text size and the context order of the transform, respectively. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm that can compute the inverse ST in an O(N) time/space complexity, a linear result independent of k. The main idea behind the design of the linear algorithm is a set of cycle properties of k-order contexts we explored for this work. These newly discovered cycle properties allow us to quickly compute the longest common prefix (LCP) between any pair of adjacent k-order contexts that may belong to two different cycles, leading to the proposed linear inverse ST algorithm.

A novel method, multiple classifier behavior-based data reduction and classification algorithm, called DRC, is proposed in this paper. It arrived at the transformation of the data-space by suing of the multiple classifier behavior vector so that data-sets transform from the original spaces to the behavior spaces. It aims to find some more meaningful representatives to replace the original dataset via classifier behavior vector for further classification. Each representative is formed by its multiple classifier behavior and its neighborhood which satisfies a predefined threshold. Inspired by the spirits of data reduction and classifier selection methods, the proposed DRC not only reduces the cost but also uses the advantage of each single classifier to improve the classification accuracy to a certain extent. This is proved by real world applications such as toxicity prediction of chemical compounds in predictive toxicology.

In this paper, we present a implicit encoding technique that makes use of lower-layer packet reordering to superimpose covert messages onto a reliable data stream. In particular, since the TCP layer provides a reliable in-order data stream over the unreliable network layerpsilas IP datagram service, we can encode covert messages by artificially permuting IP packets before they leave the source and reading the permutation at the destination prior to delivering the payload to TCP. Applying such permutations will not adversely affect TCPpsilas ability to reconstitute the transport layer data stream, since TCP is designed to be robust against out of order network layer packet delivery. We describe the design and operation of PERMEATE, an open-source covert channel toolkit which implements such a permutational covert channel over TCP, and we provide a quantitative assessment of itpsilas efficacy and efficiency as a covert channel.

This paper explores how shape, motion, and lighting interact in the case of a two-frame motion sequence. We consider a rigid object with Lambertian reflectance properties undergoing small motion with respect to both a camera and a stationary point light source. Assuming orthographic projection, we derive a single, first order quasilinear partial differential equation that relates shape, motion, and lighting, while eliminating out the albedo. We show how this equation can be solved, when the motion and lighting parameters are known, to produce a 3D reconstruction of the object. A solution is obtained using the method of characteristics and can be refined by adding regularization. We further show that both smooth bounding contours as well as surface markings can be used to derive Dirichlet boundary conditions. Experimental results demonstrate the quality of this reconstruction.

We present results of a biologically inspired method to enhance a sonar transducerpsilas directivity pattern for localization purposes. We show that an artificial pinna structure mounted over a transducer introduces features in its head related transfer function that are more interesting for localization than those in the basic piston-like directivity pattern of common ultrasonic transducers. We measured the directivity pattern of several transducer-pinna assemblies using a biologically inspired robotic bat head. We compare the measured head related transfer function of a larger (Oslash 10 mm) electromechanical film sensor with that of a much smaller commercially available electret condenser microphone, both with and without pinna. We investigate the added spatial filtering of a tragus or a ripple pattern in the pinna structure. We build monaural elevation template sets from the measured head related transfer functions and use an intertemplate distance metric to show that mounting a pinna structure over the receiving transducers makes these templates more suitable for localization.
