INFLUENCE OF THE DISCRETIZATION STEP ON THE POSITIVITY OF CONFORMABLE FRACTIONAL LINEAR SYSTEMS

The effectiveness of this work lies in the influence of the discretization step on the positivity of the one-dimensional conformable fractional linear systems. A piecewise constant approximation method which converts a continuous fractional order derivative into a discrete time equation is presented as an alternative approach. It aims at investigating whether, how and when this step affects the positive continuous times models. To accomplish this research, a new test was developed and implemented in which the positivity conditions of the considered system was examined both before and after being exposed to the sampling step. i.e., under which conditions the one-dimensional discrete-time linear system obtained by discretization from the one-dimensional continuous time linear systems will be also positive if the one-dimensional continuous time linear system is positive. The new method presented is suggested to test the influence of the discretization step on the positivity of this class of systems. Finally, we discuss some numerical examples to illustrate the validity of the provided results. © 2023, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

Stability and security issues in energy management have become widespread research topics, in which artificial intelligence techniques are often embedded in management systems to efficiently manage the smart grid. In this paper, we propose an energy grid management system with anomaly detection and Q-learning decision modules (EMSAD). The anomaly detection module is a multitask learning network that simultaneously classifies suppliers and predicts actual supply quantities. The Q-learning decision module then determines the operating reserve and subsidies to manage the energy grid. Experimental results show that the proposed anomaly detection module has an excellent performance in classifying malicious suppliers with F1-scores from 73.3% to 100.0%. The robustness evaluation also shows that EMSAD maintains high performance even in unseen environments without fine-tuning. Thus, the simulation results demonstrate the security, efficiency, transferability, and robustness of the proposed EMSAD in smart grid energy management. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Provable benefits of actor-critic methods for offline reinforcement learning

Actor-critic methods are widely used in offline reinforcement learning practice, but are not so well-understood theoretically. We propose a new offline actor-critic algorithm that naturally incorporates the pessimism principle, leading to several key advantages compared to the state of the art. The algorithm can operate when the Bellman evaluation operator is closed with respect to the action value function of the actor's policies;this is a more general setting than the low-rank MDP model. Despite the added generality, the procedure is computationally tractable as it involves the solution of a sequence of second-order programs. We prove an upper bound on the suboptimality gap of the policy returned by the procedure that depends on the data coverage of any arbitrary, possibly data dependent comparator policy. The achievable guarantee is complemented with a minimax lower bound that is matching up to logarithmic factors. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Containers provide a better performance, faster deployment than virtual machines and provide near-native performance, with isolation and security drawbacks. Although the security of containers for the Intel architecture has been investigated in more detail, there is limited work on the security of containers for the ARM architecture. In this paper, we address this gap in research and focus on the security of containers designed for the ARM architecture, which is heavily used in IoT devices. Edge computing offers many advantages, including reduced latency and resource requirements at the cloud because data can be processed at the edge before it is sent to the cloud. Using containers at the edge nodes of IoT-Edge-Cloud systems can enhance such advantages at the cost of increasing security vulnerabilities in such systems. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the security of containers designed for the ARM architecture. Accordingly, we obtained official ARM images from DockerHub and used various security tools to scan these ARM images. We found that 72% of all the vulnerabilities show varying severity levels and each tool seems to work best for particular base images. We investigated how each tool detects sub-packages and achieves a different hit ratio while none of them alone can detect at least 80% of all the vulnerabilities. In addition, we also investigated how the Docker images and their vulnerability landscape change over a period of six months by running the scanning tools twice. Finally, we also conducted a dynamic analysis of some of the images on the Raspberry Pi and study their effects. We believe this paper will facilitate the use of ARM containers at the ARM-based edge nodes by addressing security issues.

In branching process theory, linear-fractional distributions are commonly used to model individual reproduction, especially when the goal is to obtain more explicit formulas than those derived under general model assumptions. In this article, we explore a generalization of these distributions, first introduced by Sagitov and Lindo, which offers similar advantages. We refer to these as power-fractional distributions, primarily because, as we demonstrate, they exhibit power-law behavior. Along with a discussion of their additional properties, we present several results related to the Galton-Watson branching process in both constant and randomly varying environments, illustrating these advantages. Offensive language detection is essential for maintaining respectful and inclusive online environments. By implementing detection systems, platforms aim to protect users from harmful content, curb the spread of hate speech, and promote positive interactions within digital communities. Leveraging natural language processing (NLP) techniques, this area has become a key focus in computational linguistics research and development. To address this challenge, we created the ParsOffensive dataset, consisting of approximately 8,433 Persian comments labeled as Offensive or Neutral. These comments were sourced from Instagram and labeled by two linguists. Machine learning models were trained on this dataset, with the ParsBert model achieving 90% accuracy in detecting offensive speech in Persian.

Students’ grade point average (GPA) is an important indicator of students’ academic success. In our work-in-progress study, we utilized decision tree analysis to investigate patterns in predicting the GPA of engineering students, considering various demographic, socioeconomic, and academic aspects. Our analysis of the dataset consisting of engineering students’ academic records revealed several key insights. First, SAT scores emerged as a central factor in GPA prediction, with higher scores predicting better GPAs. Second, socioeconomic status also became evident among students with high SAT scores, reflecting the impact of background characteristics on academic achievements. Lastly, parent education level also stood out as significant, showing that students with highly educated parents generally achieved higher GPAs, underlining family educational background's role in success. Overall, our research adds to the existing literature by illuminating the intricate factors influencing engineering students’ GPA and provides an example of utilizing decision tree-based quantitative methods in engineering education research.

As honeybees build their nests in preexisting tree cavities, they must deal with the presence of geometric constraints, resulting in nonregular hexagons and topological defects in the comb. In this work, we study how bees adapt to their environment in order to regulate the comb structure. Specifically, we identify the irregularities in honeycomb structure in the presence of various geometric frustrations. We 3D-print experimental frames with a variety of constraints imposed on the imprinted foundations. The combs constructed by the bees show clear evidence of recurring patterns in response to specific geometric frustrations on these starter frames. Furthermore, using an experimental-modeling framework, we demonstrate that these patterns can be successfully modeled and replicated through a simulated annealing process, in which the minimized potential is a variation of the Lennard-Jones potential that considers only first-neighbor interactions according to a Delaunay triangulation. Our simulation results not only confirm the connection between honeycomb structures and other crystal systems such as graphene, but also show that irregularities in the honeycomb structure can be explained as the result of analogous interactions between cells and their immediate surroundings, leading to emergent global order. Additionally, our computational model can be used as a first step to describe specific strategies that bees use to effectively solve geometric mismatches while minimizing cost of comb building. While numerous methods have been proposed for computing distances between probability distributions in Euclidean space, relatively little attention has been given to computing such distances for distributions on graphs. However, there has been a marked increase in data that either lies on graph (such as protein interaction networks) or can be modeled as a graph (single cell data), particularly in the biomedical sciences. Thus, it becomes important to find ways to compare signals defined on such graphs. Here, we propose Graph Fourier MMD (GFMMD), a novel distance between distributions and signals on graphs. GFMMD is defined via an optimal witness function that is both smooth on the graph and maximizes the difference in expectation between the pair of distributions on the graph. We find an analytical solution to this optimization problem as well as an embedding of distributions that results from this method. We also prove several properties of this method including scale invariance and applicability to disconnected graphs. We showcase it on graph benchmark datasets as well on single cell RNA-sequencing data analysis. In the latter, we use the GFMMD-based gene embeddings to find meaningful gene clusters. We also propose a novel type of score for gene selection called gene localization score which helps select genes for cellular state space characterization.
