The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper details the integration of augmented reality (AR) in a new factory, focusing on enhancing maintenance efficiency and optimization. The innovative approach involves combining AR technology, an Android application, and Siemens PLCs (Programmable Logic controller), for efficient automation. The robustness of the PLC enables seamless integration within manufacturing environments, accommodating diverse programming paradigms. The software aspect features Human Machine Interface (HMI) configuration using Siemens’ WinCC software, offering dynamic visualizations, alarm handling, and data logging. WinCC’s scalability suits applications of varying sizes. The HMI architecture is designed for easy parameter display. The Android application, developed with Java and Python, leverages their respective strengths in Android app development and image processing. Data exchange is facilitated by OPC-UA, supporting multiple programming languages for seamless communication. The AR Teleassistance is highlighted as a revolutionary solution, fostering real-time communication among global experts, technicians, and operators. Beyond gaming origins, AR teleassistance enhances efficiency in various sectors, minimizing downtime and facilitating global knowledge transfer. The integration of Teleassistance promotes effective collaboration between human expertise and automated systems, crucial for optimal performance in modern industrial settings. Continuous development is suggested through the addition of more 3D mechanical drawings and real-time stock information for parts in the application, aiming for future optimization and performance enhancement.

The increasing prevalence of smart building architectures, driven by the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and automation systems, has led to a surge in energy consumption. This research explores the application of swarm intelligence techniques as an innovative approach to optimize neural networks, aiming to strike a balance between maintaining the desired performance levels and minimizing energy consumption. The study investigates the integration of swarm-based optimization algorithms, such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) into the training and operation of neural networks. These algorithms enable the networks to dynamically adapt and optimize their parameters in response to changing environmental conditions and user requirements. The research focuses on developing a comprehensive framework that considers the specific challenges posed by smart building architectures, including real-time data processing, sensor integration, and adaptive control. The proposed approach aims to achieve optimal neural network configurations that minimize energy consumption while ensuring reliable and responsive operation of smart building systems. The results demonstrate the potential of swarm intelligence to significantly improve the energy efficiency of neural network-enabled smart building architectures, providing a promising avenue for sustainable and intelligent infrastructure. The proposed model has an accuracy of 98.23% which is 7.64% higher than that of the traditional approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

The superior performance of object detectors is often established under the condition that the test samples are in the same distribution as the training data. However, in many practical applications, out-of-distribution (OOD) instances are inevitable and usually lead to uncertainty in the results. In this paper, we propose a novel, intuitive, and scalable probabilistic object detection method for OOD detection. Unlike other uncertainty-modeling methods that either require huge computational costs to infer the weight distributions or rely on model training through synthetic outlier data, our method is able to distinguish between in-distribution (ID) data and OOD data via weight parameter sampling from proposed Gaussian distributions based on pre-trained networks. We demonstrate that our Bayesian object detector can achieve satisfactory OOD identification performance by reducing the FPR95 score by up to 8.19% and increasing the AUROC score by up to 13.94% when trained on BDD100k and VOC datasets as the ID datasets and evaluated on COCO2017 dataset as the OOD dataset.

High performance collaborative tracking problem, requiring a group of independent subsystems to generate a global output that can precisely track the desired reference in a repetitive manner, has found lots of applications in practice. However, for such an important control task, existing iterative learning control (ILC) methods have not considered the constraint on each subsystem's output, which leads to potential risk within the control process. This paper proposes a novel optimisation based ILC method to address the high performance collaborative tracking problem with output constraints. The proposed ILC framework can guarantee not only each subsystem's output constraint is always satisfied during the control process, but also the monotonic convergence of a well-defined performance index to a possibly minimum value. To avoid huge computational complexity for large scale systems, we further apply the idea of the alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to implement the proposed ILC frame-work in a decentralised manner, which allows the resulting decentralised methods to be applied to large scale and changing systems. Moreover, the decentralised ILC method proposed in this paper is suitable for non-minimum phase, heterogeneous and/or homogeneous systems, which is appealing in practice. Convergence properties of the proposed ILC algorithms are analysed rigorously, and numerical examples are given to demonstrate the algorithms' effectiveness.

computer games as an educational tool significantly improved information retention, student involvement, and motivation. Despite the growing popularity and the demonstrated positive impact, little progress is made to let educators create games without learning game programming or investing massive amounts of time, money, and human resources. This paper considers the usage of procedural content generation in simplifying the generation of game environments. Given that most educational material is in text format, we evaluate the possibility of generating 3D scenes starting from natural language text. A comprehensive survey of the current methods is presented, analyzing whether they can be successfully used in game-based learning. The study discusses several current limitations and possible improvements, highlighting a need for better progress in the domain.

Smart agricultural systems require irrigation systems powered by renewable energy sources that are also adaptable for isolated areas without connection possibility to the electricity network or the water network. For such situations, in this paper, a solution is proposed using a wind turbine and a submersible pump to feed a water basin, subsequently irrigation is done by free fall. The developed solution is designed and simulated using a model of a medium-power wind turbine, and a battery storage element with the aim of providing the necessary electricity for irrigation of an agricultural area in Buzau, where there is a water deficit.

Smart spaces are a rapidly emerging concept in technology. They result from the convergence of various novel technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which allow for greater levels of automation and control within physical environments. The devices which are connected to the IoT network are equipped with sensors to acquire and exchange data. As a result, the IoT has transformed how we live, work, and play. However, the deployment in smart spaces is not always the best due to the issues arising from network node positioning. Therefore, we are investigating solutions to this problem with a novel approach which utilises Voronoi diagrams in conjunction with the algorithmic genetic technique. First, the initial positions of the IoT nodes will be determined by simulating a homogeneous Poisson point process in the smart space environment. Then, after dividing the area into the Voronoi cells, the genetic algorithm will optimise the position towards achieving full network coverage within the smart space. Experimental results prove the 100% network coverage within the specified area. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper presents a method of assessing thermal comfort in office rooms, using data collected from Fitbit bracelets. The result is a fuzzy system for the level of thermal comfort that wants to meet two objectives: reducing the energy consumption in the building and fulfilling the thermal comfort for the occupants. The representative factors taken into account in this study are: air temperature, relative humidity, user activity, clothing level and skin temperature. The proposed fuzzy system was modeled and simulated in the Matlab/SIMULINK development environment, showing satisfactory results after the analysis of the data taken over a period of several days.

Drones have become common devices that are increasingly used, from toy mini drones to very advanced autonomous flying platforms used in various industries. The safety of using engineering structures and the need to shorten the time of carrying out diagnostic activities, and thus reduce costs, force the use of innovative tools to carry out an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of existing engineering structures, especially large-size ones, including bridges strengthened with external FRP (fibre reinforced polymer) composite overlays. There are conventional methods for assessing the technical condition of existing building structures conducted by inspectors and experts, involving the use of typical inspection and diagnostic tools. During the research, it was found that it is possible to conduct an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of engineering structures using an unmanned flying platform equipped with a thermal imaging diagnostic device. The uniqueness of the presented solution is that the drone is equipped with a docking module that allows the drone to be temporarily attached to the structure being diagnosed for the duration of diagnostic activities. To ensure appropriate conditions for structural diagnostics, a unique system of automated diagnostic processes and a multi-stage structure of the control system in all phases of operation were developed. The article presents a solution for the control system based on control consistent with the reference model. In particular, the focus was on the difficult and dangerous issue of altitude control during the docking phase. Simulation tests conducted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, as well as laboratory and field tests on a real drone proved the correctness of the proposed solutions, which facilitated the undisturbed operation of the diagnostic module. © 2025 The Author(s).
