In this paper, using tools from graph theory we provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique hydraulic equilibrium in district heating systems of meshed topology and containing multiple heat sources. Even though numerous publications have addressed the design of efficient algorithms for numerically finding hydraulic equilibria in the general context of water distribution networks, this is not the case for the analysis of existence and uniqueness. Moreover, most of the existing work dealing with these aspects exploit the equivalence between the nonlinear algebraic equations describing the hydraulic equilibria and the KKT conditions of a suitably defined nonlinear convex optimization problem. Differently, this paper proposes necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic conditions on the actuator placement for the existence and uniqueness of a hydraulic equilibrium, independent of the actuators' control objective. An example based on a representative district heating network is considered to illustrate the key aspects of our contribution, and an explicit formulation of the steady state solution is given for the case in which pressure drops through pipes are linear with respect to the flow rate.

Cybersecurity has in recent years emerged as a paramount concern in the design and operation of industrial systems and civil infrastructures, due mainly to their susceptibility to malicious cyber attacks which take advantage of the vulnerability of communication networks and IT devices. In this paper, we investigate such an attack and counter attack scenario by considering multiagent systems, a somewhat basic prototype of cyberphysical systems. We study false data injection attacks launched on the agent sensors, and possible defense of such attacks at the agent actuators. The primary issue under consideration is the stealthiness of the attacks, while steering a multiagent system away from its consensual state. We propose a metric to quantify the stealthiness, and formulate the stealthiness problem as one of zero-sum games. We solve the problem explicitly, which gives rise to a fundamental bound on the stealthiness achievable, and as well optimal attack and defense strategies that achieve the optimal stealthiness, both of which can be obtained in terms of certain augmented controllability Gramians associated with the agents. The stealthiness bound is seen to depend on agent dynamics and network characteristics including a measure of connectivity.

controlling the temperature in chemical reactors, heating furnaces, distillation columns, and reboilers for circulating heating fluids is crucial across all industries. This project is a simulation-based study where both PID-cascade and fractional order PID (FO-PID) controllers were used to control the temperature of water in the continuously stirred tank heater system. The simulation was designed by using SIMULINK. Initially, the work reproduces results from a previous study that evaluated the performance of PID cascade controller applied for controlling the temperature of continuous stirred tank heater. Building on this foundation, a novel fractional-order PID (FO-PID) controller was designed and its parameters were optimized using the Whale Optimizer Algorithm (WOA). Results showed that the FO-PID outperforms the PID-cascade controller in terms of settling time and percentage overshoot. This study demonstrates significant advancements in process innovation and optimization, supporting sustainable industrial systems. The FO-PID controller in comparison to the Cascade PID controller reduced the percentage overshoot by approximately 97%, reduced settling time by 87% and maintained comparable steady-state error. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2025.

Evaluation of Differentially Constrained Motion Models for Graph-Based Trajectory Prediction

Given their adaptability and encouraging performance, deep-learning models are becoming standard for motion prediction in autonomous driving. However, with great flexibility comes a lack of interpretability and possible violations of physical constraints. Accompanying these data-driven methods with differentially-constrained motion models to provide physically feasible trajectories is a promising future direction. The foundation for this work is a previously introduced graph-neuralnetwork-based model, MTP-GO. The neural network learns to compute the inputs to an underlying motion model to provide physically feasible trajectories. This research investigates the performance of various motion models in combination with numerical solvers for the prediction task. The study shows that simpler models, such as low-order integrator models, are preferred over more complex ones, e.g., kinematic models, to achieve accurate predictions. Further, the numerical solver can have a substantial impact on performance, advising against commonly used first-order methods like Euler forward. Instead, a second-order method like Heun’s can significantly improve predictions. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Electrocardiography (ECG) is vital for diagnosing and monitoring cardiovascular diseases. automatic interpretation of ECG signals, particularly classifying heartbeats, is essential in diagnosing these conditions. We compared the performance of three classifiers (K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Random Forests (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) using heartbeat and ECG signal features. We trained the classifiers on 173 heartbeats from 11 recordings in the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia (MITDB) Database. To address imbalance, we used SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique) to increase the number of abnormal heartbeats. We divided the data into 70% for training set and 30% for testing set, evaluating performance through 10-fold cross-validation. Results demonstrated state-of-the-art performance for KNN, RF, and SVM. KNN achieved an overall accuracy, positive predictive value, and sensitivity of 0.977, 0.978, and 0.978, respectively. RF achieved an overall accuracy, precision, and sensitivity of 0.971, 0.972, and 0.971, respectively. SVM achieved a recall of 0.988, 0.989, and 0.988. SVM exhibited the highest overall performance in heartbeat classification (0.99), followed by KNN (0.98) and RF (0.97). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper proposes a novel approach for the design of stabilizing sliding manifolds for linear systems affected by model uncertainties and external disturbances. In classical sliding mode control approaches, rejecting model uncertainties and external disturbances often relies on designing a dis-continuous control law with a suitable gain. Specifically, the greater the uncertainty, the larger the control gain. However, this approach might be detrimental to the plant. Instead, the proposed technique deals with this problem by focusing on the design of a suitable sliding manifold, where stability is guaranteed despite model uncertainties. This approach exhibits several benefits such as not needing any further identification process and designing a smaller control gain.

The paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach including methods from disciplines such as history of concepts, linguistics, natural language processing (NLP) and Semantic Web, to create a comparative framework for detecting semantic change in multilingual historical corpora and generating diachronic ontologies as linguistic linked open data (LLOD). Vehicle positioning algorithms are essential for improving traffic management and safety by accurately locating vehicles in real-time, and, thus, minimizing congestion and accidents. They also support the development of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles, relying on precise positioning data for safe navigation. One of the solutions involves using image processing algorithms, which can have two approaches. One approach is decentralized, in which each vehicle performs its own computing steps and determines its position concerning the other nearby vehicles. The second approach, proposed in this paper, is centralized, where each vehicle sends data to a server that uses cloud computing to process all the data in real-time. As such, vehicles can create a more comprehensive view of the driving conditions in the area by using either of these two approaches, which can help them anticipate potential hazards and make more informed decisions.

Joint State and Parameter Estimation Using the Partial Errors-in-Variables Principle

This letter proposes a new method for joint state and parameter estimation in uncertain dynamical systems. We exploit the partial errors-in-variables (PEIV) principle and formulate a regression problem in the sense of weighted total least squares, where the uncertainty in the parameter prior is explicitly considered. Based thereon, the PEIV regression can be solved iteratively through the Kalman smoothing and the regularized least squares for estimating the state and the parameter, respectively. The simulations demonstrate improved accuracy of the proposed method compared to existing approaches, including the joint maximum a posterior-maximum likelihood, the expectation maximisation, and the augmented state extended Kalman smoother.
