The formation of platoons, where groups of vehicles follow each other at close distances, has the potential to increase road capacity. In this paper, a decentralized control approach is presented that extends the well-known constant headway vehicle following approach to the two-dimensional case, i.e., lateral control is included in addition to the longitudinal control. The presented control scheme employs a direct vehicle following approach where each vehicle in the platoon is responsible for following the directly preceding vehicle according to a nonlinear spacing policy. The proposed constant headway spacing policy is motivated by an approximation of a delay-based spacing policy and results in a generalization of the constant headway spacing policy to the two-dimensional case. By input-output linearization, necessary and sufficient conditions for the tracking of the nonlinear spacing policy are obtained, which motivate the synthesis of the lateral and longitudinal controllers of each vehicle in the platoon. By deriving an internal state representation of the follower vehicle and showing input-to-state stability, the internal dynamics for each leader-follower subsystem are shown to be well-behaved in case the leader drives in steady state conditions (i.e., the leader vehicle's trajectory is unexcited). The results are illustrated by a simulation.

Research into the engineering of infrastructure systems is increasingly data intensive. Researchers build computational models to explore scenarios such as investigating the merits of infrastructure plans, analysing historical data to inform system operations or assessing the impacts of infrastructure on the environment. Models are more complex, at higher resolution and with larger coverage. Researchers also require a 'multi-systems' approach to explore interactions between systems, such as energy and water with urban development, and across scales, from buildings and streets to regions or nations. Consequently, researchers need enhanced computational resources to support cross-institutional collaboration and sharing at scale. The Data and Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure (DAFNI) is an emerging computational platform for infrastructure systems research. It provides high-throughput compute resources so larger data sets can be used, with a data repository to upload data and share these with collaborators. Users' models can also be uploaded and executed using modern containerisation techniques, giving platform independence, scaling and sharing. Further, models can be combined into workflows, supporting multi-systems modelling and generating visualisations to present results. DAFNI forms a central resource accessible to all infrastructure systems researchers in the UK, supporting collaboration and providing a legacy, keeping data and models available beyond the lifetime of a project. © 2023 Emerald Publishing Limited: All rights reserved.

In this study, 74 college student volunteers were recruited as experimental participants, and 108 game 3D images of the Arena of Valor game were used as the selected samples. The digital avatar is presented to the subject through AR technology. Then, the participants were asked to choose five digital avatar that they would probably go on to use in the future metaverse. Finally, after excluding the effects of game familiarity and other socio-statistical variables, it was found that the gender of the selected Digital avatar was positively correlated with the actual participants’ gender, and it was further found that females were more gender specific and more aggregated in terms of Gender Expression than males, while males were less gender specific and more dispersed. This study found that although there was certain influence of historical culture on the selection aspect of the digital avatar, it was not significant. In current granular clustering algorithms, numeric representatives were selected by users or an ordinary strategy, which seemed simple; meanwhile, weight settings for granular data could not adequately express their structural characteristics. Aiming at these problems, in this study, a new scheme called a granular weighted kernel fuzzy clustering (GWKFC) algorithm is put forward. We propose the representative selection and granularity generation (RSGG) algorithm enlightened by the density peak clustering (DPC) algorithm. We build interval and triangular granular data on the strength of numeric representatives obtained by RSGG under the principle of justifiable granularity (PJG), in which we establish some combinations of functions and boundary constraints and prove their properties. Furthermore, we present a novel distance formula via the kernel function for granular data and design new weights to affect the coverage and specificity of granular data. In addition, based upon these factors, we come up with the GWKFC algorithm of granular clustering, and its performance with different granularity is assessed. To sum up, a macro framework involving granular modeling, granular clustering, and assessment has been set up. Lastly, the GWKFC algorithm and ten other granular clustering algorithms are compared by experiments on some artificial and UCI datasets together with datasets with large data or those of high dimensionality. It is found that the GWKFC algorithm can provide better granular clustering results by contrast with other algorithms. The originality is embodied as follows. First, we improve the previous density radius and present the RSGG algorithm to acquire numeric representatives. Second, we propose a new strategy to determine granular data boundaries and further obtain novel weights enlightened by the idea of volume. Climate change and geopolitics have led to the conception of plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the sustainability of existing fossil-based energy systems. In this respect, district heating has been identified as an indispensable player for its potential to integrate seamlessly environmentally-friendly heat sources. To improve the efficiency of these district heating systems, optimal operation schemes can be devised and enforced through control systems. To this end, we present a control-oriented nonlinear ODE-based model of temperature dynamics in a multi-producer district heating system. The model features a modular design and comprises the thermal dynamics of heat exchangers of producers and consumers interconnected by a distribution network of meshed topology. Then, we establish passivity properties and zero-state detectability for the modeled temperature dynamics that could be exploited for controller design and solving constrained optimization problems.

The study of electric vehicles (EVs) aims to address the critical challenges of promoting widespread adoption. These challenges include EVs’ high upfront costs compared to conventional vehicles, the need for more sufficient charging stations, limitations in battery technology and charging speeds, and concerns about the distance EVs can travel on a single charge. This paper is dedicated to designing an innovative strategy to handle EV charging station arrangement issues in different cities. Our research will support the development of sustainable transportation by intelligently replying to the challenges related to short ranges and long recharging times through the distribution of fast and ultra-fast charge terminals by allocating demand to charging stations while considering the cost variable of traffic congestion. A hybrid combination of Dynamic Greylag Goose Optimization (DGGO) algorithm, as well as a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model, is employed in this approach to determine, in a cost-sensitive way, the location of the parking lots, factoring in the congestion for traffic as a variable. This study examines in detail the experiments on the DGGO + LSTM model performance for the purpose of finding an efficient charging station place. The results show that the DGGO + LSTM model has achieved a stunning accuracy of 0.988,836, more than the other models. This approach shapes our finding’s primary purpose of proposing solutions in terms of EV charging infrastructure optimization that is fully justified to the EV’s wide diffusion and mitigating of the environmental consequences. In this paper we propose a consensus model using fractional calculus, which is an emerging topic in multi-agent modeling. Fractional models have infinite memory and can be understood as a relatively simple extension of traditional calculus. We propose a model structure motivating it by psychological research. For such model we also provide a stability analysis allowing results on possibilities of consensus arising in the modelled group of agents. To achieve this, we use fractional difference equations, which illustrate our considerations for agent groups of increasing complexity.

Transmissibility function analysis refers to the evaluation of the ratio between the spectra of two different outputs of a system and has been widely used for the detection and localization of damage in linear structural systems. In this article, a new transmissibility function analysis methodology is proposed to detect and localize damage with nonlinear features in multidegree-of-freedom (MDOF) structural systems. The methodology assumes the MDOF systems are subject to a general input with only the frequency range known a priori so is applicable to address damage detection and location issues for a wide range of engineering structures and systems. This methodology is derived based on the concept of nonlinear output frequency response functions (NOFRFs) and the concept of transmissibility of nonlinear systems introduced based on the NOFRFs. The transmissibility function analysis over output frequencies contributed by system nonlinearities is exploited to detect and localize damage with nonlinear features in MDOF structural systems. Both numerical simulations and experimental studies on a cracked beam structure in the laboratory have been conducted. The results verify the effectiveness and demonstrate the potential applications of the proposed methodology in the detection and localization of damage in practical engineering structures. © The Author(s) 2025.

We present a methodology for designing a dynamic controller with delayed output feedback for achieving non-collocated vibration suppression with a focus on the multi-frequency case. To synthesize the delay-based controller, we first remodel the system of equations as a delay-differential algebraic equation (DDAE) in such a way that existing tools for design of a static output feedback controller can be easily adapted. The problem of achieving non-collocated vibration suppression with sufficient damping is formulated as a constrained optimization problem of minimizing the spectral abscissa in the presence of zero-location constraints, with the constraints exhibiting polynomial dependence on its parameters. We transform the problem into an unconstrained one using elimination, following which we solve the resulting non-convex, non-smooth optimization problem.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is critical in evolving 5G and developing 6G networks, running on edge devices, and solving resource management challenges. The burgeoning number of edge devices draws attention to the potential of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks with their onboard computing capabilities for edge inference. This paper explores LEO scenarios where multiple remote sensing edge AI inference tasks concurrently process data from a single source. However, due to there being parts with the same functions between different AI applications, traditional monolithic edge AI architecture must be deployed repeatedly and falls short in efficiently harnessing the heterogeneous resources of LEO satellite networks. To solve this problem, we utilize the microservice architecture to decouple a single AI application into several independent microservices to reuse these same functions. However, due to the high latency caused by multiple microservices’ communication, we need to design a deployment strategy to fully utilize resources to reduce the service latency. We present a microservice deployment model to minimize the total service latency across all AI applications and meet resource constraints with the constraints of hardware, energy, and memory limitations. This latency optimization problem is rewritten as a Markov decision process (MDP) to effectively deal with the challenge posed by the time-varying transmission rate caused by satellite mobility. To increase the training data utilization, we employ a Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) based reinforcement learning algorithm to meet the dynamic environment challenge. Finally, we obtain a sub-optimal solution with minimal accuracy loss and an acceptable solution time.
