The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of wearing face masks as a preventive measure to reduce the spread of the virus. In medical settings, such as hospitals and clinics, healthcare professionals and patients are required to wear surgical masks for infection control. However, the use of masks can hinder facial recognition technology, which is commonly used for identity verification and security purposes. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach to detect faces covered by surgical masks in medical settings. We evaluated the proposed CNN model on a test set comprising of masked and unmasked faces. The results showed that our model achieved an accuracy of over 96% in detecting masked faces. Furthermore, our model demonstrated robustness to different mask types and fit variations commonly encountered in medical settings. Our approaches reaches state of the art results in terms of accuracy and generalization. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

An investigation area of interest including the use of blockchain technology to address Internet of Things security concerns (IoT). Despite the fact that numerous relevant ideas have been offered, there are few published works that provide hypothetical and information backing. The examination of model building and execution assessment is the focus of this research. First, an IoT security paradigm is outlined, using blockchain and the Inter-Planetary-File-System (IPFS) in a view. Many of the security risks associated with traditional IoT designs can be avoided with this paradigm, and framework execution is entirely focused on distributed large limit stockpiling, simultaneity, and query. In addition, the suggested model's display is evaluated using normal idleness and throughput, which are important for further investigation and enhancement of this course. The blockchain-based security model's feasibility has been demonstrated via analysis and experiments. © 2022 IEEE.

A combination of two shared input splitting capacitor banks and varying number of individualized inverter-leg flying-capacitors characterized topological feature of a large group of 5L ANPC inverters configurations. The inconveniences in the provision of these per phase flying-capacitors make these configurations less attractive in most applications. The 5L E-type inverter, characterized by four shared input capacitor banks, becomes a viable alternative topology. However, the high blocking-voltage rating of the constituent switches still places restrictions on the use of the 5L E-type inverter within this voltage range. In view of this, this paper presents a reconfiguration of the 5L E-type inverter. To lessen the voltage stress on the switching devices used here, the common node of the E-type inverter’s bidirectional switch is investigated. Inverter costs and losses are influenced by the decreased voltage stress. The carrier-overlapped pulse-width modulation, or COPWM, perspective serves as the foundation for the inverter control technique. Simulated results of the inverter performances are presented together with an analysis of the cost competitiveness of the proposed inverter power circuit. A 17.68% reduction in loss dissipation and a 13.61% cost savings were recorded by using the proposed power circuit. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multi-fleet platoon matching: A game-theoretic approach

We consider the platoon matching problem for a set of trucks with the same origin, but different destinations. It is assumed that the vehicles benefit from traveling in a platoon for instance through reduced fuel consumption. The vehicles belong to different fleet owners and their strategic interaction is modeled as a non-cooperative game where the vehicle actions are their departure times. Each truck has a preferred departure time and its utility function is defined as the difference between its benefit from platooning and the cost of deviating from its preferred departure time. We show that the platoon matching game is an exact potential game. An algorithm based on best response dynamics is proposed for finding a Nash equilibrium of the game. At a Nash equilibrium, vehicles with the same departure time are matched to form a platoon. Finally, the total fuel reduction at the Nash equilibrium is studied and compared with that of a cooperative matching solution where a common utility function for all vehicles is optimized. This note studies state estimation in wireless networked control systems with secrecy against eavesdropping. Specifically, a sensor transmits a system state information to the estimator over a legitimate user link, and an eavesdropper overhears these data over its link independent of the user link. Each connection may be affected by packet losses and is modeled by a finite-state Markov channel (FSMC), an abstraction widely used to design wireless communication systems. This paper presents a novel concept of optimal mean square expected secrecy over FSMCs and delineates the design of a secrecy parameter requiring the user mean square estimation error (MSE) to be bounded and eavesdropper MSE unbounded. We illustrate the developed results on an example of an inverted pendulum on a cart whose parameters are estimated remotely over a wireless link exposed to an eavesdropper.

This paper presents a comparative study between the commonly used switches (IGBT, MOSFET, SiC and GaN) for power inverters of electric vehicles. A 400 V, three-phase inverter system simulation test is implemented using LTspice and the conducted emissions are compared to variant CISPR standards and switching frequencies in order to show the possible interferences with the other car equipment.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. This paper presents a control design framework for robust reinforcement learning (RL) based vehicle control enhanced with object avoidance using a model predictive approach. The proposed integration method is applied for motion control of autonomous road vehicles. In the motion control, longitudinal and lateral dynamics are incorporated, and the high-performance motion of the vehicle, through the RL-based control agent is achieved. ’H. co based robust control is used as a baseline parallel to the RL-agent to ensure stable operation. The object avoidance and limited error path following are achieved using a model-based predictive algorithm. Finally, the control signals of the three controllers are combined using a supervisor layer, which solves a constrained optimization task to ensure high performance and safe motion. The effectiveness of the proposed control method using simulation scenarios is illustrated.

This paper explores the applicability of generative AI (genAI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), for the automatic generation and configuration of metaheuristic algorithms to address a real-world engineering problem: the optimal parameter estimation of time-delay systems in interconnected heating-cooling loops. The study introduces a pioneering workflow and iterative architecture with feedback within the emerging field of genAI-driven optimization for real optimization problems, eliminating the need for manually crafted or modified algorithms. This automated system empowers domain experts in engineering to solve complex optimization problems with minimal knowledge of optimization algorithms, lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated algorithm use. We demonstrate how LLMs can generate effective optimizers under conditions like connstrained optimization problems where the solution lies near the boundaries of the search space. Four state-of-the-art LLMs (closed and open-sourced) have been selected for experiments. These are GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Claude Sonnet 3.5 and Llama 3.1. All studied LLMs generated metaheuristics that outperformed the initialization baseline optimization method (Random Search and CMA-ES). Notably, the Claude Sonnet 3.5 model generated a metaheuristic with the best mean results, almost matching the performance of the tuned state-of-the-art DISH algorithm, as an example of adaptive Differential Evolution. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

controlling the temperature in chemical reactors, heating furnaces, distillation columns, and reboilers for circulating heatin g fluids is crucial across all industries. This project is a simulation-based study where both PID-cascade and fractional order PID (FO-PID) controllers were used to control the temperature of water in the continuously stirred tank heater system. The simulation was designed by using SIMULINK. Initially, the work reproduces results from a previous study that evaluated the performance of PID cascade controller applied for controlling the temperature of continuous stirred tank heater. Building on this foundat ion, a novel fractional-order PID (FO-PID) controller was designed and its parameters were optimized using the Whale Optimizer Algorithm (WOA). Results showed that the FO-PID outperforms the PID-cascade controller in terms of settling time and percentage overshoot. This study demonstrates significant advancements in process innovation and optimization, supporting sustainable industrial systems. The FO-PID controller in comparison to the Cascade PID controller reduced the percentage overshoot by approximately 97%, reduced settling time by 87% and maintained comparable steady-state error.
