Steady-state visual-evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a non-invasive means of communication through high-speed speller systems. However, their efficiency is highly dependent on individual training data acquired during time-consuming calibration sessions. To address the challenge of data insufficiency in SSVEP-based BCIs, we introduce SSVEP-DAN, the first dedicated neural network model designed to align SSVEP data across different domains, encompassing various sessions, subjects, or devices. Our experimental results demonstrate the ability of SSVEP-DAN to transform existing source SSVEP data into supplementary calibration data. This results in a significant improvement in SSVEP decoding accuracy while reducing the calibration time. We envision SSVEP-DAN playing a crucial role in future applications of high-performance SSVEP-based BCIs. A new method for promoting the detection of breast cancer in thermograms: applying deep autoencoders for eliminating redundancies in parallel with preserving independent components

Although thermography has been proposed over the past decade as an effective method for breast cancer diagnosis, the complexity of thermograms presents a significant obstacle, making their interpretation challenging. Recently, deep learning has emerged as a promising framework for analyzing breast thermograms. However, the performance of deep neural networks heavily relies on the volume of training images, and the limited number of labeled thermograms necessitates the generation of synthetic images for training. This article introduces a novel method that eliminates redundant or destructive information in synthetic thermograms while preserving essential and independent features using deep autoencoder concepts. Consequently, the proposed strategy enhances the representation of synthetic images for training deep networks, leading to improved breast cancer detection in thermograms. Evaluating the performance of the proposed method on the DMR-IR dataset shows a significant improvement in detecting cancerous breasts in thermograms compared to benchmark methods. Integrating this innovation into the basic model achieved an average accuracy of 92.3%, sensitivity of 93%, and specificity of 91.4%, surpassing the basic model’s 89.1%, 86%, and 92.5%, respectively. The proposed method demonstrated superior performance in mitigating overfitting, as evidenced by a smaller gap between training and validation curves, resulting in a 7% improvement in accuracy and a 3.2% increase in sensitivity. Although there was a slight decrease of 1.1% in specificity, it was outweighed by other parameter improvements. Additionally, the method led to a significant reduction in the dispersion range of test results, approximately six times less than alternative approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Intrinsic Entropy: A Novel Adaptive Method for Measuring the Instantaneous Complexity of Time Series

The determination of appropriate parameters and an appropriate window size in most entropy-based measurements of time-series complexity is a challenging problem. Inappropriate settings can lead to the loss of intrinsic information within a time series. Therefore, two parameter-free methods, namely the intrinsic entropy (IE) and ensemble IE (eIE) methods, are proposed in this paper. The eIE method requires two parameters, which can be easily determined through an orthogonality test. The proposed approaches can measure instantaneous complexity;thus, they do not require a predetermined window size. White noise and three other varieties of colored noise were used to test the stability of the proposed methods, and five types of synthetic signals and logistic maps were applied for measuring instantaneous complexity and regularity. The results revealed that the IE and eIE methods exhibit satisfactory stability. Both methods provide point-by-point entropy measures for time series. The eIE method is useful for measuring the complexity of frequency and amplitude modulation. Furthermore, the periodicity of time series can be detected using the two proposed methods. © 1994-2012 IEEE.

Sleep staging serves as a fundamental assessment for sleep quality measurement and sleep disorder diagnosis. Although current deep learning approaches have successfully integrated multimodal sleep signals, enhancing the accuracy of automatic sleep staging, certain challenges remain, as follows: 1) optimizing the utilization of multi-modal information complementarity, 2) effectively extracting both long- and short-range temporal features of sleep information, and 3) addressing the class imbalance problem in sleep data. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stream encode-decoder network, named TSEDSleepNet, which is inspired by the depth sensitive attention and automatic multi-modal fusion (DSA2F) framework. In TSEDSleepNet, a two-stream encoder is used to extract the multiscale features of electrooculogram (EOG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. And a self-attention mechanism is utilized to fuse the multiscale features, generating multi-modal saliency features. Subsequently, the coarser-scale construction module (CSCM) is adopted to extract and construct multi-resolution features from the multiscale features and the salient features. Thereafter, a Transformer module is applied to capture both long- and short-range temporal features from the multi-resolution features. Finally, the long- and short-range temporal features are restored with low-layer details and mapped to the predicted classification results. Additionally, the Lovász loss function is applied to alleviate the class imbalance problem in sleep datasets. Our proposed method was tested on the Sleep-EDF-39 and Sleep-EDF-153 datasets, and it achieved classification accuracies of 88.9% and 85.2% and Macro-F1 scores of 84.8% and 79.7%, respectively, thus outperforming conventional traditional baseline models. The rapid expansion of cloud computing has led to increased energy consumption, raising concerns about its environmental impact. Despite advancements in scheduling algorithms, existing methods face critical challenges, including suboptimal energy efficiency, limited adaptability to dynamic cloud environments, and insufficient context-aware decision-making. Recent techniques, such as Meta Reinforcement Learning, Genetic Algorithms, and Energy-Aware Scheduling, show potential but often struggle with high computational complexity, static resource allocation, or scalability issues. These shortcomings result in inefficient resource utilization, elevated energy usage, and difficulties in meeting Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements. To address these challenges, this study introduces the Energy Efficient Semantic Scheduling Framework (ESSF), a novel approach combining semantic reasoning and energy profiling to optimize task scheduling in dynamic cloud environments. The framework integrates three key components: (1) Dynamic Energy Profiling (DEP) for real-time energy monitoring, (2) Semantic Resource Matching (SRM) utilizing knowledge graphs for context-aware allocation, and (3) Adaptive Workload Balancing (AWB) to dynamically redistribute tasks for improved resource utilization and energy efficiency. Experiments using the Google Cluster Trace Dataset demonstrate that ESSF reduces energy consumption by up to 25% compared to traditional methods while achieving 90% resource utilization and 97% SLA compliance. These results highlight the potential of the proposed framework to overcome existing limitations, offering a scalable, adaptive, and environmentally sustainable solution for task scheduling in cloud computing. © 2025 IEEE.

Biological networks are essential for understanding the complex cellular mechanisms of living organisms. Simulating biological networks allows researchers to model and understand complex cellular processes without the need for extensive and costly experiments. The ability to generate synthetic graphs that closely resemble these real-world, complex biological processes is a vital research area. Graph generation in the context of biological networks is particularly significant because it can lead to insights into cellular functions, disease mechanisms, and therapeutic targets. Recent advances in deep learning, particularly in graph generative models, have opened new avenues for applications in the biological domain. These advancements have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of biological systems. However, despite the development of numerous effective graph generation models, there has been limited work assessing the qualitative aspects of the generated graphs within the context of biological networks. Addressing this gap is crucial for ensuring that synthetic graphs are not only structurally accurate but also biologically *** various graph generation models are available, their application to biological network recreation has been limited. In this paper, we focus on graph generation, specifically edge and node-independent models for biological networks. We assess four candidate models across four gene expression networks. Our systematic assessment examines the models' qualitative aspects, including graph structural properties, generation diversity, and computational efficiency. Our findings highlight the strengths and limitations of current models, offering insights to guide the development of more robust graph generation techniques that accurately replicate biological network characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.

Assessing the Impact of Distractions Using a Virtual-Reality-Based GO/NOGO Task

The GO/NOGO task provides an objective assessment of a subject's attention and response inhibition and is typically given to subjects without any unexpected distractions. Studying the impact of distractions is important from the therapeutic viewpoint as distractions may occur during exposure therapy and degrade treatment efficacy. In this study, we utilized a virtual classroom integrated with electroencephalogram (EEG) for a GO/NOGO task with multimode environmental distractions to study the impact of distractions on behavioral and neuronal activities. Thirty healthy male adults were recruited. Statistical analysis and machine learning methods were employed to analyze the behavioral and neuronal data. The results demonstrated no significant behavioral differences between conditions with and without distractions. However, the impacts of distractions manifested in the enhancement of frequency-specific power, including theta, alpha, and gamma oscillations in GO trials, as well as beta power and the N200 peak in NOGO trials, highlighting their role in attention regulation and response inhibition. Finally, machine learning result analysis identified significant differences between conditions with and without distractions using EEG features, achieving an accuracy rate of 98.3%. In conclusion, we found that introducing distractions into a GO/NOGO task provides a deeper understanding of the neuronal correlates of distractions, and these findings can inform the development of therapeutic strategies for attention-related disorders. © 2024 IEEE.
