Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) provides users with low-latency, highly responsive services by deploying Edge Servers (ESs) near applications. MEC allows any edge-hosted application or service to be migrated between different edge resource providers without being locked into a single provider. Nevertheless, due to its complexity and dynamics, the real edge computing environment is prone to errors and failures, reducing the reliability of edge service migration. This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant method for redundant path service migration. The method utilizes sliding-window-based model and identifies a set of service migration paths, enabling the evaluation of the time-varying failure rate of ESs. The method combines resubmission and replication mechanisms and decides the edge service migration scheme by selecting multiple redundant migration paths. We also conduct extensive simulations and show that our proposed method outperforms traditional solutions in several metrics. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Attention Enabled Ensemble Deep Learning Models and its Validation for Depression Detection: A Domain Adoption Paradigm

Background and Motivation: Depression is increasingly prevalent leading to higher suicide risk. Depression detection and sentimental analysis in text inputs in cross-domain frameworks is challenging. Just solo deep learning (SDL) and ensemble deep learning (EDL) models are not robust enough. Recently attention mechanisms were introduced in SDL. We hypothesize that attention-enabled EDL (aeEDL) architectures would be superior compared to attention-not-enabled SDL (aneSDL) or aeSDL ***: We designed EDL-based architectures with attention blocks to build eleven kinds of SDL and five kinds of EDL models on four domain-specific datasets. We scientifically validate our models by comparing 'seen' and 'unseen' paradigms (SUP). We benchmark against SemEval (2016) sentimental dataset and establish reliability ***: The mean increase in accuracy for EDL over their corresponding SDL components was 4.49%. For studying the effect of attention block, the increase in mean accuracy (AUC) of aeSDL over aneSDL was 2.58% (1.73%), and increase in mean accuracy (AUC) of aeEDL over aneEDL was 2.76% (2.80%). When comparing EDL vs. SDL for non-attention and attention, the mean aneEDL was greater than aneSDL by 4.82% (3.71%) and mean aeEDL was greater than aeSDL by 5.06% (4.81%). On benchmarking dataset (SemEval), the best-performing aeEDL model (ALBERT+BERT-BiLSTM) was superior to the best aeSDL (BERT-BiLSTM) model by 3.86%. Our scientific validation and robust design showed a difference of only 2.7% in SUP, thereby meeting regulatory ***: We validated all our hypotheses and further demonstrated that aeEDL is a very effective and generalized method for detecting symptoms of depression in cross-domain settings. © 2023, The Authors. The very process of illustration itself challenges our mathematical understanding and forces us to answer questions we may not have posed otherwise. It can even make mathematics an experimental science, in which immersive exploration of data and representations drive the cycle of problem, conjecture, and proof. Today, modern technology for the first time places the production of highly complicated models within the reach of many individual mathematicians. Hierarchical attention fusion for geo-localization

Geo-localization is a critical task in computer vision. In this work, we cast the geo-localization as a 2D image retrieval task. Current state-of-the-art methods for 2D geo-localization are not robust to locate a scene with drastic scale variations because they only exploit features from one semantic level for image representations. To address this limitation, we introduce a hierarchical attention fusion network using multi-scale features for geo-localization. We extract the hierarchical feature maps from a convolutional neural network (CNN) and organically fuse the extracted features for image representations. Our training is self-supervised using adaptive weights to control the attention of feature emphasis from each hierarchical level. Evaluation results on the image retrieval and the large-scale geo-localization benchmarks indicate that our method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, the correctness of the algebraic determination of the coordinate of the third focus of the Cartesian oval is examined and analysed. This analysis is necessary because the process includes solving systems with a large number of multivariate polynomial equations using the computer algebra system Maple. The paper also considers the difficulties and limitations of using computers in determining the coordinate of the third focus. © 2024 IEEE.

Objective: Our objective is to develop and validate TrajVis, an interactive tool that assists clinicians in using artificial intelligence (AI) models to leverage patients' longitudinal electronic medical records (EMR) for personalized precision management of chronic disease progression. Methods: We first perform requirement analysis with clinicians and data scientists to determine the visual analytics tasks of the TrajVis system as well as its design and functionalities. A graph AI model for chronic kidney disease (CKD) trajectory inference named DEPOT is used for system development and demonstration. TrajVis is implemented as a full-stack web application with synthetic EMR data derived from the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Translational Data Warehouse and the Indiana Network for Patient Care research database. A case study with a nephrologist and a user experience survey of clinicians and data scientists are conducted to evaluate the TrajVis system. Results: The TrajVis clinical information system is composed of four panels: the Patient View for demographic and clinical information, the Trajectory View to visualize the DEPOT-derived CKD trajectories in latent space, the Clinical Indicator View to elucidate longitudinal patterns of clinical features and interpret DEPOT predictions, and the Analysis View to demonstrate personal CKD progression trajectories. System evaluations suggest that TrajVis supports clinicians in summarizing clinical data, identifying individualized risk predictors, and visualizing patient disease progression trajectories, overcoming the barriers of AI implementation in healthcare. Conclusion: TrajVis bridges the gap between the fast-growing AI/ML modeling and the clinical use of such models for personalized and precision management of chronic diseases. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Towards narrative medical visualization

Narrative visualization aims to communicate scientific results to a general audience and garners significant attention in various applications. Merging exploratory and explanatory visualization could effectively support a non-expert understanding of scientific processes. Medical research results, e.g., mechanisms of the healthy human body, explanations of pathological processes, or avoidable risk factors for diseases, are also interesting to a general audience that includes patients and their relatives. This paper discusses how narrative techniques can be applied to medical visualization to tell data-driven stories about diseases. We address the general public comprising people interested in medicine without specific medical background knowledge. We derived a general template for the narrative medical visualization of diseases. Applying this template to three diseases selected to span bone, vascular, and organ systems, we discuss how narrative techniques can support visual communication and facilitate understanding of medical data. Other scientists can adapt our proposed template to inform an audience on other diseases. With our work, we show the potential of narrative medical visualization and conclude with a comprehensive research agenda. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Periocular refers to the externally visible region of the face that surrounds the eye socket. This feature-rich area can provide accurate identification in unconstrained or uncooperative scenarios, where the iris or face modalities may not offer sufficient biometric cues due to factors such as partial occlusion or high subject-to-camera distance. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted its importance, as the ocular region remained the only visible facial area even in controlled settings due to the widespread use of masks. This paper discusses the state of the art in periocular biometrics, presenting an overall framework encompassing its most significant research aspects, which include: (a) ocular definition, acquisition, and detection;(b) identity recognition, including combination with other modalities and use of various spectra;and (c) ocular soft-biometric analysis. This paper deals with storytelling aspects of computer games. A new approach to automatic story generation based on graph modelling is proposed. Godot Engine for visualization of output stories is used. In our research the plot is represented by a specific graph called the layered graph composed of story building blocks, namely layer of locations, layer of characters, layer of items, layer of narration and plot dependencies. An appropriate set of graph rules (productions) stored in JSON format is a generative tool for the building blocks. Graph rules are internal representation of actions which can be taken by the hero of the story. A sequence of the rules from start to end can describe the whole gameplay of one player or can be generated in automatic way as a possible gameplay. All such sequences of the rules create the space of all potential gameplays. Every rule corresponds to a certain animation made in Godot Engine. It allows to visualize every possible story, represented by sequence of rules, by seamless animation. Given a rule, animation is based on graphic assets corresponding to the rule nodes of the layered graph. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Significance of Single Interval Discrete Attributes: Case Study on 2-Level Discretisation

Supervised discretisation is widely considered as far more advantageous form of transformation than unsupervised processing of attributes. When evaluating candidate cut-points for splitting the ranges of values of discretised features, the supervised methods help to preserve informative content of a variable, which is useful for classification. After a discretisation process, based on employed criteria, some attributes can be found as irrelevant, with all their values represented in discrete domain by a single interval. In consequence, such variables are removed from considerations, and no knowledge is mined from them. The paper presents research works focused on extended 2-level transformations of attributes values, with combining supervised with unsupervised discretisation strategies. For all variables with single intervals returned from supervised algorithms, the ranges of values were divided by unsupervised methods with varying numbers of bins. Resulting variants of data were subjected to selected data mining techniques and performance of chosen classifiers evaluated and compared.
