The head related transfer function (HRTF) method of providing spatial sound images has not been capable of dealing with individual differences between human listeners yet. The HRTF varies from person to person and with the direction of the sound source. We focus on this directional variation of the individual HRTF. Principal component analysis is applied to draw the loci of the variation in an orthogonal basis space. Each locus corresponds to a single individual HRTF, and the loci are utilized for clustering the individual HRTF. Some typical ones can be extracted from clusters;we show that they are useful in compensating for the individual differences found in HRTFs.

A rasterization algorithm must efficiently generate pixel fragments from geometric descriptions of primitives. In order to accomplish per-pixel shading, shading parameters must also be interpolated across the primitive in a perspective-correct manner. If some of these parameters are to be interpreted in later stages of the pipeline directly or indirectly as texture coordinates, then translating spatial and parametric coherence into temporal coherence will improve texture cache performance. Finally, if framebuffer access is also organized around cached blocks, then organizing rasterization so fragments are generated in block-sequential order will maximize framebuffer cache performance. Hilbert-order rasterization accomplishes these goals, and also permits efficient incremental evaluation of edge and interpolation equations.

This paper describes a method of building and maintaining a good set of triangle strips for both static and continuous level-of-detail (CLOD) meshes. For static meshes, the strips are better than those computed by the classic SGI and STRIPE algorithms. For CLOD meshes, the strips are maintained incrementally as the mesh topology changes. We propose a general, powerful framework of type systems for the π-calculus, and show that we can obtain as its instances a variety of type systems guaranteeing non-trivial properties like deadlock-freedom and race-freedom. A key idea is to express types and type environments as abstract processes: We can check various properties of a process by checking the corresponding properties of its type environment. The framework clarifies the essence of recent complex type systems, and it also enables sharing of a large amount of work such as a proof of type preservation, making it easy to develop new type systems.

An automatic smooth surface connection method that has the capability of tension control is presented. Given two trimmed NURBS surfaces, the new method constructs a smooth connection surface to connect the trimming regions of the trimmed surfaces at the trimming curves. The connection satisfies the pseudo-G1 or pseudo-C1 smoothness requirement, a condition not as strong as G1 or C1, but smooth enough for most industrial applications. The construction process consists of four major steps: connection curves construction and alignment, initial blends construction, setting up continuity constraints, and internal and external boundary smoothing. The advantages of the new method include: (1) providing the users with more flexibility in adjusting the shape of the connection surface, (2) the representation of the connection surface is compatible with most of the current data-exchange standards, (3) including the classical blending as a special case but with more flexib ility on the setting of the rail curves, and (4) smoother shape of the resulting connection surface through an energy optimization process. Test cases that cover important applications are included.
