In numerous applications, including image retrieval, brand monitoring, and counterfeit identification, the detection and categorization of logos play pivotal roles. This study proposes a novel methodology employing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for discerning fraudulent logos. The CNN’s structure involves several convolutional layers at its core, accompanied by max-pooling layers to extract features for classification. Training the CNN model involves a varied dataset containing both authentic and fake logo images, and its effectiveness is assessed using well-established metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The results of the study indicate that the proposed model is proficient in distinguishing counterfeit logos accurately. Furthermore, the study delves into potential applications and future directions of using CNN for identifying counterfeit logos. This research presents a robust methodology for counterfeit logo detection, thereby supporting endeavors aimed at curtailing the proliferation of counterfeit goods and upholding brand integrity.

This paper explores the application of centralised and distributed Gaussian process algorithms to real-time target tracking and compares their performance. By embedding the algorithms into the Stone Soup, the focus is on the innovative implementation of Gaussian process methods with learning hyperparameters and implementation with a factorised variance of the Gaussian kernel. The performance of the methods with different kernels was evaluated, not only with the Gaussian kernel. Extensive experiments with various kernel configurations demonstrate their importance in enhancing prediction accuracy and efficiency, especially in real-time tracking. The case studies with manoeuvring targets show significant advancements in tracking capabilities, particularly in wireless sensor networks, using optimised Gaussian process methods. This work advances Stone Soup’s capabilities and lays the groundwork for future investigations into adaptive Gaussian Process applications in tracking and sensor data analysis.

Team-based capstone courses are integral to many undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the computing field. They are designed to help students gain hands-on experience and practice professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and self-reflection as they transition into the real world. Prior research on capstone courses has focused primarily on the experiences of students. The perspectives of instructors who teach capstone courses have not been explored comprehensively. However, an instructor's experience, motivation, and expectancy can have a significant impact on the quality of a capstone course. In this working group, we used a mixed methods approach to understand the experiences of capstone instructors. Issues such as class size, industry partnerships, managing student conflicts, and factors influencing instructor motivation were examined using a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews with capstone teaching staff from multiple institutions across different continents. Our findings show that there are more similarities than differences across various capstone course structures. Similarities include team size, team formation methodologies, duration of the capstone course, and project sourcing. Differences in capstone courses include class sizes and institutional support. Some instructors felt that capstone courses require more time and effort than regular lecture-based courses. These instructors cited that the additional time and effort is related to class size and liaising with external stakeholders, including industry partners. Some instructors felt that their contributions were not recognized enough by the leadership at their institutions. Others acknowledged institutional support and the value that the capstone brought to their department. Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions $(\text{TLA}^{+})$ , into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one's undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive “failuresy” through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding $\text { TLA }^{+}$ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in $\text { TLA }^{+}$ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. Resilient Set-based State Estimation for Linear Time-Invariant systems Using Zonotopes

This paper considers the problem of set-based state estimation for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems under time-varying sensor attacks. Provided that the LTI system is stable and observable via every single sensor and that at least one sensor is uncompromised, we guarantee that the true state is always contained in the estimated set. We use zonotopes to represent these sets for computational efficiency. However, we show that intelligently designed stealthy attacks may cause exponential growth in the algorithm’s worst-case complexity. We present several strategies to handle this complexity issue and illustrate our resilient zonotope-based state estimation algorithm on a rotating target system. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Gram positive cocci occur as not only singles but also arrangements of pairs, tetorads, chains and clusters in Gram stained smears images. In this paper, we detect Gram positive cocci based on the annotation along singles, which is an annotation along a single bacterium, and the annotation along arrangements, which is an annotation along arranged bacteria. Here, we avoid to the difference of the number of regions obtained by the annotations both decreasing the number of regions by annotation along singles and increasing the number of regions by annotation along arrangements. © 2024 IEEE.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that diabetic retinopathy affects one-third of diabetics, regardless of their stage of the disease. Several research efforts are focused on its automated detection and diagnosis. Identifying diabetic retinopathy is crucial due to the damage that occurs to the blood vessels of the eye retina, leading to vision blur or even complete blindness. Thus, an annual checkup is needed for people with diabetes. Moreover, uncontrolled sugar levels for diabetes patients could worsen the current stage of diabetic retinopathy. Consequently, automated detection can greatly contribute to the treatment of disease. This can be carried out through several algorithms, including deep learning models and support vector machines, in addition to transfer learning. This contribution proposes a new approach for diabetic retinopathy automated detection based on convolutional neural network (CNN) models. The proposed model provides both binary and multi-class detection. Both scenarios have shown promising results, where the training accuracies of both the binary classification and the multi-class are 92% and 94%, respectively.

This paper proposes a distributed prescribed-time observer for nonlinear systems representable in a block-triangular observable canonical form. Using a weighted average of neighbor estimates exchanged over a strongly connected digraph, each observer estimates the system state despite the limited observability of local sensor measurements. The proposed design guarantees that distributed state estimation errors converge to zero at a user-specified convergence time, irrespective of observers’ initial conditions. To achieve this prescribed-time convergence, distributed observers implement time-varying local output injection gains that monotonically increase and approach infinity at the prescribed time. The theoretical convergence is rigorously proven and validated through numerical simulations, where some implementation issues due to increasing gains have also been clarified. This paper proposes a novel bi-fidelity control framework for robotic manipulators that integrates a high-fidelity model predictive control (MPC) scheme with a low-fidelity Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network surrogate. Unlike conventional fixed-schedule approaches, our method employs an event-triggered mechanism that dynamically selects the appropriate controller based on a real-time error metric. This mechanism ensures that the computationally intensive MPC is invoked only when the LSTM approximation deviates beyond acceptable bounds. We rigorously established the near-optimal performance and closed-loop stability of our approach via Lyapunov analysis under mild assumptions, instilling confidence in its reliability. The simulation results on a three-arm manipulator, subject to low-frequency sinusoidal and high-frequency chirp trajectories, demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves up to 80–90% reduction in MPC calls, significantly improving the accuracy of the follow-up and computational efficiency. These findings highlight the potential of integrating learning-based approximations with conventional optimization-based control to achieve reliable and time-efficient performance in complex robotic manipulation tasks. © 2025 The Authors

Retrosynthesis prediction focuses on identifying reactants capable of synthesizing a target product. Typically, the retrosynthesis prediction involves two phases: Reaction Center Identification and Reactant Generation. However, we argue that most existing methods suffer from two limitations in the two phases: (i) Existing models do not adequately capture the "face" information in molecular graphs for the reaction center identification. (ii) Current approaches for the reactant generation predominantly use sequence generation in a 2D space, which lacks versatility in generating reasonable distributions for completed reactive groups and overlooks molecules’ inherent 3D properties. To overcome the above limitations, we propose GDiffRetro. For the reaction center identification, GDiffRetro uniquely integrates the original graph with its corresponding dual graph to represent molecular structures, which helps guide the model to focus more on the faces in the graph. For the reactant generation, GDiffRetro employs a conditional diffusion model in 3D to further transform the obtained synthon into a complete reactant. Our experimental findings reveal that GDiffRetro outperforms state-of-the-art semi-template models across various evaluative metrics. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.
