The main contribution of this paper is the design of an event-triggered formation control for leader-following consensus in second-order multi-agent systems(MASs)under communication *** the agents must follow the trajectories of a virtual leader despite communication faults considered as smooth time-varying delays dependent on the distance between the *** matrix inequalities(LMIs)-based conditions are obtained to synthesize a controller gain that guarantees stability of the synchronization *** on the closed-loop system,an event-triggered mechanism is designed to reduce the control law update and information exchange in order to reduce energy *** proposed approach is implemented in a real platform of a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)under communication faults.A comparison between a state-of-the-art technique and the proposed technique has been provided,demonstrating the performance improvement brought by the proposed approach.

In this paper, the quadratic buck converter (QBC) is proposed as competitive alternative to implement a battery charger. Since, QBC is a high order system, the required control is designed to follow the conventional constant-current constant-voltage regime by means of three loops. Namely, i) an inner-loop operating in sliding mode to control the current of the closest inductor to the input port providing the properly stability of the system, ii) a first outer loop designed to regulate the battery voltage providing the reference of the inner loop, and finally iii) a second outer loop to regulate the battery current modifying the reference of the voltage loop. Proportional Integral (PI) controllers are used in both outer loops. Simulation results are presented validating the theoretical study. © 2023 IEEE.

Task offloading in mobile edge computing systems is subject to various random factors including the connection to external servers, new task requests from users, and the availability of local processing services. However, statistical information is often not available in practical scenarios. To tackle the issue, we adopt a Q-learning-based approach that learns the optimal task offloading policy through observations of random events. Traditional Q-learning methods may face challenges such as long training times and high memory usage due to the large state and action space. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel method that leverages the concept of adjacent state sequence. In this type of sequence, we can infer the optimal offloading decision of a system state from other states. This method aims to improve the convergence speed and memory efficiency of the learning model by reducing the number of parameters that need to be learned and stored. Those eliminated parameters instead can be computed via a derived linear expression. We conduct experiments to demonstrate the enhancement of our proposed method compared to the traditional $\mathbf{Q}-$ learning in the studied problem.

Cultural Heritage (CH) is a challenging domain of application for novel Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), where visualization plays a major role in enhancing the visitors’ experience, whether onsite or online. Technology-supported natural human-computer interaction is a key factor in enabling access, both on-site and online, to CH assets. Recent advances in ICT enhance visitors’ access to online collections as well as their CH experience onsite, bringing even wider audiences than those who visit the physical museums. The range of visualization devices – from tiny smartwatch screens, through large situated public displays, to the latest generation of immersive Head-Mounted Displays – together with the increasing availability of real-time 3D rendering technologies for online and mobile devices and, recently, Internet of Things (IoT) approaches, Social Robotics, requires exploring how they can be applied successfully in CH. Following the successful workshops at AVI 2016, AVI 2018, AVI 2020, AVI 2022 and AVI 2024 and a large number of recent events and projects focusing on CH, the goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in presenting and discussing the potential of state of the art advanced visual interfaces in enhancing our daily cultural heritage experience. This year the workshop theme will be: AVI for accessibility in CH.

This paper introduces a novel Sliding Mode-Based Observer tailored for a specific subset of nonlinear systems of order $\boldsymbol n$ featuring Lipschitz nonlinearities. The study establishes stability conditions that ensure convergence of the estimation error (s) in finite time until order $\boldsymbol n$ , thus, providing an accurate state (s) estimation without the necessity for disturbance matching conditions. Furthermore, the study presents an extension of the scope of application of the proposed method to tackle a unique scenario characterized by a time-varying and non-invertible function of the output dynamics of the system model. The effectiveness of the proposed observer is showcased through simulation examples.

This study examines the safety behaviors of delivery and private motorcycle riders in Marrakech, Morocco, with a particular focus on mobile phone distractions. Data were collected over a two-week period at five key intersections, recording 5731 riders during peak traffic hours. Trained observers captured rider characteristics, traffic context, and unsafe behaviors at different times of day morning, noon, and evening to account for variations in traffic conditions. Decision tree analysis was used to explore the relationships between rider type, road conditions, time of day, gender, and mobile phone usage while riding. The findings revealed that private riders were more likely to use mobile phones while riding compared to delivery riders. Unsafe behaviors were influenced by environmental factors, rider demographics, and the timing of the behaviors. Significant differences in behavior were observed between private and delivery riders, with gender also playing a role in safety practices. These results highlight the need for targeted interventions, including educational campaigns to address mobile phone and policies designed for specific rider groups.

P4toNFV: Offloading from P4 switches to NFV in programmable data planes

P4 combines the benefits of hardware-based networking with the adaptability of software-based network operations. However, when faced with intricate network functions, P4 switches reveal constraints in memory and processing primitives. To address these, we advocate offloading traffic demanding intricate processing from the programmable data plane to network function virtualization (NFV). By leveraging this approach, P4 switches handle the core data plane, ensuring maximum performance, whereas virtualized network functions (VNF) cater to the intricate processing. Central to our research is the optimization of this offloading process, specifically considering delay constraints. We developed an analytical model that examines a P4 switch overseen by an SDN controller, integrating an offloading capability to NFV. The principal objective was to determine an offloading rate that minimizes packet processing delay. To this end, we employed a Bounded method, an advancement from Brent's method, to determine this optimal rate. The findings indicate that offloading approximately 66% of packets to the VNF achieves the lowest total delay, registering at 0.1505 (Formula presented.) s. This strategy of optimal offloading can notably reduce the system's average delay as the demand for network functions increases. The optimization technique we adopted exhibited rapid convergence in our experiments, reflecting the method's efficacy. Furthermore, a rigorous parametric sensitivity analysis spanning no offloading, full offloading, and optimal offloading strategies underscores that optimal offloading to NFV consistently augments system performance, particularly in terms of delay reduction. Conclusively, our study furnishes valuable insights into offloading strategies, augmenting the narrative on resource allocation in both PNFs and VNFs. © 2023 The Authors. Beneficence is a social phenomenon that has rarely been modeled computationally so far. In this paper, we propose to study the beneficence of online opinions and comments published on social media on essential topics for society. Our computational approach is based on measuring semantic similarity. We apply three measures to assess the beneficence of $\sim 41 K$ social media users: average Confidence, Normalized Google Distance, and Pointwise Mutual Information. As a use case, we analyze opinions on the topic of vaccinations on Facebook, where two distinct groups (Pro-Vax vs. Anti-Vax) are present. The results reveal a shared connection to beneficence among social media users, with both groups exhibiting similar levels of similarity and no significant clustering into echo chambers.

— Ensuring safety is a crucial challenge when deploying reinforcement learning (RL) to real-world systems. We develop confidence-based safety filters, a control-theoretic approach for certifying state safety constraints for nominal policies learnt via standard RL techniques, based on probabilistic dynamics models. Our approach is based on a reformulation of state constraints in terms of cost functions, reducing safety verification to a standard RL task. By exploiting the concept of hallucinating inputs, we extend this formulation to determine a "backup" policy which is safe for the unknown system with high probability. Finally, the nominal policy is minimally adjusted at every time step during a roll-out towards the backup policy, such that safe recovery can be guaranteed afterwards. We provide formal safety guarantees, and empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. © 2022, CC BY.

The latest evolution in power systems, is ‘smart grids'that offers real time monitoring, control features as well as effective management of renewable energy sources. Nonetheless, with the increase in the system complexity, the chances for insta- bility also increase and thus it is crucial to forecast the stability accurately for the safety of the grid. Weather it is in terms of Gradient Boosting Tree Algorithm or any other traditional algorithm, these machine learning models are successful in achieving the objectives of the task but they lack a forthcoming metric to assist in high stake situations, uncertainty quantification. The paper is devoted to the analysis of the reliability of smart grid systems based on Bayesian Neural Networks (BNN) taking into account both the reliability of predictive modeling and forecasting uncertainty. The smart grid stability augmented dataset was used to benchmark the efficacy of using BNNs or BNNs combined hybrid models, one with XGBoost, for feature extraction and the other with LightGBM. The present study shows that the BNN used with the above mentioned smart grid system achieved an accuracy of 92% with precision of 0.89, recall of 0.91 and F1 of 0.90. These metrics are appending with the help of the additional features of BNN where they are capable of addressing the key questions around uncertainty and thus the metrics confirming the predictions are quite strong in terms of real-time grid stability evaluation. This article encapsulates a detailed study of BNN architecture, the role of uncertainty in machine learning models and the natural application of such models in the design of dependable and fault-tolerant smart grids.
