This systematic review gave special attention to diabetes and the advancements in food and nutrition needed to prevent or manage diabetes in all its forms. There are two main forms of diabetes mellitus: Type 1 (T1D) and Type 2 (T2D). The loss of beta cells brought on by an autoimmune reaction causes the pancreas to be unable to produce enough insulin, which leads to Type 1 diabetes. A deficiency of insulin could arise as the illness worsens. The most frequent cause is a combination of excessive body weight and inadequate exercise. Currently, 90–95% of patients have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Age-specific normal blood sugar ranges exist and knowing them is crucial for determining a target blood sugar level that is both healthy and appropriate. The main takeaway is that diet regimens ought to be tailored to the patient’s requirements and should account for their capacity for change. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that have the biggest impact on the rise in blood glucose. In this paper, we have proposed a novel method for glucose monitoring and diet recommendations for diabetic patients using fog computing. A paradigm known as fog computing makes use of the benefits that come from using both cloud and edge devices to support modern computing systems by offering high-quality services, cutting latency, facilitating mobility, supporting multi-tenancy, and many other features. © 2025 by Begell House, Inc.

CBIR: a novel identification approach for college students in need based on consumer behavior psychology theory

The accurate identification of students in need is crucial for governments and colleges to allocate resources more effectively and enhance social equity and educational fairness. Existing approaches to identifying students in need rely on manual operations that include manually extracting consumption behavior information, statistical consumption characteristics and principal component analysis. However, this issue may lead to low prediction accuracy and inefficiency in identifying students in need. We design a three-stage framework to accurately identify college students in need from the perspective of consumer behavior psychology. The consumption behavior information is first obtained from the student consumption records using the consumption behavior clustering approach. The consumption behavior matrix is then built by extracting consumption and spatiotemporal information in different periods. Finally, a novel consumption behavior identification ResNeSt (CBIR) model is proposed to identify college students in need accurately. The experimental results on real datasets show that the CBIR model has higher prediction accuracy than the baseline models. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Bi-clustering, also known as co-clustering, is a powerful data analysis technique that simultaneously clusters rows and columns of a data matrix, revealing hidden patterns. In this paper, we propose a neurodynamics-driven binary matrix factorization approach for bi-clustering binary data. The proposed method utilizes multiple discrete Hopfield networks operating concurrently to explore local optimal solutions. Furthermore, a particle swarm optimization rule is iteratively applied to reinitialize the neuronal states for directing the search toward better solutions. Comparative evaluations across six benchmark datasets reveal that the proposed method outperforms five existing methods in terms of five internal and external indices. © 2025 IEEE.

SmartZone: Runtime Support for Secure and Efficient On-Device Inference on ARM TrustZone

On-device inference is a burgeoning paradigm that performs model inference locally on end devices, allowing private data to remain local. ARM TrustZone as a widely supported trusted execution environment has been applied to provide confidentiality protection for on-device inference. However, with the rise of large-scale models like large language models (LLMs), TrustZone-based on-device inference faces challenges in migration difficulties and inefficient execution. The rudimentary TEE OS on TrustZone lacks both the inference runtime needed for building models and the parallel support necessary to accelerate inference. Moreover, the limited secure memory resources on end devices further constrain the model size and degrade performance. In this paper, we propose SmartZone to provide runtime support for secure and efficient on-device inference on TrustZone. SmartZone consists three main components: (1) a trusted inference-oriented operator set, providing the underlying mechanisms adapted to the TrustZone’s execution mode for trusted inference of DNN models and LLMs. (2) the proactive multi-threading parallel support, which increases the number of CPU cores in the secure state via cross-world thread collaboration to achieve parallelism, and (3) the on-demand secure memory management method, which statically allocates the appropriate secure memory size based on pre-execution resource analysis. We implement a prototype of SmartZone on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ board and evaluate it on four well-known DNN models and llama2 LLM. Extensive experimental results show that SmartZone provides end-to-end protection for on-device inference while maintaining excellent performance. Compared to the origin trusted inference, SmartZone accelerates the inference speed by up to 4.26× and reduces energy consumption by 65.81%. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

With the prevalence of Large Language Models (LLMs), recent studies have shifted paradigms and leveraged LLMs to tackle the challenging task of Text-to-SQL. Because of the complexity of real world databases, previous works adopt the retrieve-then-generate framework to retrieve relevant database schema and then to generate the SQL query. However, efficient embedding-based retriever suffers from lower retrieval accuracy, and more accurate LLM-based retriever is far more expensive to use, which hinders their applicability for broader applications. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes Gen-SQL, a novel generate-ground-regenerate framework, where we exploit prior knowledge from the LLM to enhance embedding-based retriever and reduce cost. Experiments on several datasets are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our proposed method. Ordinal classification for knee osteoarthritis x-rays using vision transformers

Knee Osteoarthritis is a progressive and chronic knee joint disease that shows symptoms of pain, stiffness, and swelling and is diagnosed by knee radiographs. These radiographs are evaluated by radiologists using Kellgren and Lawrence’s (KL) grading scheme. According to this scheme, the knee radiograph is graded from KL grade 0 (i.e., Normal) to KL grade 4 (i.e., Severe) to assess the KOA severity. For an automated system, the first step is to localize knee joints from knee radiographs and then classify them according to the KL grading system. In this work, we have proposed vision-based transformers to localize knee joints. We also proposed a single-stage model to localize the knee and classify KOA using a single model. We also explored and compared the performance of various transformers using a multiclass image classification strategy. Since KL grades maintain intrinsic ordinal information of KL grades, we employed an ordinal classification-based strategy to improve automated knee osteoarthritis classification performance. A total of 10 models are trained and validated on multiple datasets, and visualizations are generated for the best model for better comprehension. Our model obtained state-of-the-art results for knee detection and ordinal X-ray classification for KOA. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests also indicate that the ordinal classification approach significantly improves the performance of models over traditional image classification approaches. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Explainable fake news detection predicts the authenticity of news items with annotated explanations. Today, Large Language Models (LLMs) are known for their powerful natural language understanding and explanation generation abilities. However, using LLMs for explainable fake news detection remains two main challenges. Firstly, fake news appears reasonable and could easily mislead LLMs, leaving them unable to understand the complex news-faking process. Secondly, utilizing LLMs for this task would generate correct and incorrect explanations, requiring abundant labor in the loop. In this paper, we propose LLM-GAN, a novel framework that utilizes prompting mechanisms to enable an LLM to function as a Generator and a Detector for realistic fake news generation and detection. Extensive experimental results demonstrate LLM-GAN's effectiveness in both prediction performance and explanation quality. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper introduces an autonomous and cost-effective method for assessing cycleway pavement roughness, using an action camera equipped with high-resolution sensors including an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Global Positioning System (GPS). The methodology utilizes simplified quarter car model for bicycles, without manual intervention, to calculate International Roughness Index (IRI) for cycleway surface quality evaluation. It utilizes our novel approach to determine stable section from which average acceleration orientation vector is computed. For analysis we propose a corrected-roughness index (CRI), which is a quantized version of IRI. Experiments conducted on asphalt cycleways in Ireland revealed strong correlations between vehicle vibration and surface roughness. Results further demonstrate the consistency of the proposed model across different bikes through comparative analysis. Observations indicate bias in vibration data, influenced by different tire sizes and the mechanical features of the bicycles. Ample profits of GPU cryptojacking attract hackers to recklessly invade victims’ devices, for completing specific cryptocurrency mining tasks. Such malicious invasion undoubtedly obstructs normal device usage and wastes computation resources. To resist the threat of GPU cryptojacking, existing works aim to timely detect and clear away it, by distinguishing the dissimilitude between it and legitimate applications. However, these detection mechanisms inappropriately rely on two conflict cornerstones, manifested in leveraging mutable samples of illegitimate cryptojacking to design supervision-based detection models requiring samples with stable patterns. This limitation compromises the practicability of existing detection mechanisms in the face of mutable cryptojacking samples. To fill the gap, we explore the superiority of unsupervised learning in handling this issue and further propose an unsupervised manner-enabled detection mechanism named MagInspector, only using legitimate applications’ magnetic signatures from GPU side channels for model construction. MagInspector innovates in training an unsupervised autoencoder network by an adversarial mode that well learns the stable signature patterns of legitimate applications, while incompatible with mutable cryptojacking ones. In the process of model training, we elaborately extract mutual energy cumulation distribution features to represent legitimate applications to overcome the impact of their inter-type differences. Meanwhile, a locality sensitive hashing-driven outlier removal algorithm is designed to enhance MagInspector’s robustness to the noise samples. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on GPUs covering four generations of common NVIDIA architectures and two generations of AMD architectures;the results show that applying MagInspector to mutable cryptojacking signature detection achieves a significant average accuracy improvement of 25.5% and 17.8%, respectively. © 2005-2012 IEEE.
