A simple, shorted monopole antenna, constructed from stamping a flat metal plate, operating in the 2.4/5/6 GHz Wi-Fi 7 bands and also the 6G upper mid-band in the 5925-8400 MHz range is introduced. The antenna design comprises a bent rectangular monopole short-circuited to a small antenna ground and a narrow side plate extended in the lateral direction with overall dimensions of 8 mm × 10 mm × 44 mm. The bent rectangular monopole can produce a wide operating bandwidth of 5150-8400 MHz, while the side plate contributes to the 2.4 GHz band. With a height of 0.08 at 2.4 GHz and the use of minicoaxial cable feeding, many possibilities can be provided in antenna placement within a wireless device. The design is discussed with numerical results in this conference proceeding. © 2024 IEEE.

In healthcare, Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a technique to improve clinical decision support, patient care, and medical research. By automating clinical recording, NLP enhances the calibre of medical records and professional communication. It makes Electronic Health Records (EHRs) easier to use by facilitating quick and easy data entry, retrieval, and access to vital patient data that helps with precise diagnosis and efficient treatment planning. Through the analysis of patient-specific data, NLP supports clinical decision support by delivering prompt recommendations. Chatbots and virtual assistants managing repetitive duties like booking appointments also improve patient connection. NLP makes it easier to analyse vast amounts of literature for medical research, facilitating the extraction and summary of important discoveries. Healthcare data processing requires text preparation, sentiment analysis, Named Entity Recognition (NER), semantic parsing, and Natural Language Generation (NLG). However, there are obstacles to overcome, like bias, ethical concerns, system integration, privacy, and data quality. The healthcare industry can use NLP to enhance patient outcomes, promote personalized medication, and streamline healthcare delivery by guaranteeing interoperability and setting standards. © 2024 IEEE.

Machine learning (ML)-based surrogate models offer a promising alternative for Multibody Dynamics (MBD) Simulation of railway vehicle-track dynamics systems. A well-built ML model can accurately and quickly predict the dynamic responses to various track irregularities, significantly reducing computation time and unifying integration interfaces of different vehicle-track systems. However, training effective surrogate models is a complex process, influenced by the specific needs of the analysis. Different algorithms and training sets might be required for different surrogate models, making it essential to research the impact factors for building these models. This paper presents a comparative analysis of ML-based surrogate modeling approaches tailored for MBD Model within a railway digital twin platform. The primary focus is evaluating the performance of various ML-based surrogate modeling approaches, as well as the influence of neural networks, training parameters, and data sources. By leveraging extensive simulation and measurement data, we assess the ability of these surrogate models to predict key performance indicators under varying operational conditions. This analysis provides valuable insights for railway engineers in selecting appropriate surrogate modeling approaches, ultimately contributing to the advancement of predictive maintenance and optimization in railway operations. © 2024 IEEE.

SoundOrbit: motion-correlation interaction with auditory orbital trajectories

SoundOrbit is a novel input technique that uses motion correlation to control smart devices. The technique associates controls with specific orbital sounds, made of cyclically increasing/decreasing musical scales, and the user can activate a control by mimicking the corresponding sound by body motion. Unlike previous movement-correlation techniques based on visual displays, SoundOrbit operates independent of visual perception, enabling the development of cost-effective smart devices that do not require visual displays. We investigated SoundOrbit by conducting two user studies. The first study evaluated the effectiveness of binaural sound spatialization to create a distinct orbiting sound. In comparison to a cyclic musical scale that is fixed in the apparent auditory space, we found that spatial effects did not improve users’ ability to follow the sound orbit. In the second study, we aimed at determining the optimal system parameters, and discovered that users synchronize better with slower speeds. The technique was found to be feasible and reliable for one and two orbits simultaneously, each orbit using a distinct sound timbre, but not for three orbits due to a high error rate. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024. corrected publication 2024.

A dual-strip monopole antenna printed on the two layers of the low-cost substrate for internet of things (IoT) applications is presented. The antenna design comprises one longer direct-fed strip on the front layer and one shorter coupled-fed strip on the back layer for compact layout. The longer strip can resonate a well-matched mode in the 2.4 GHz (2400-2500 MHz) band and at the same time, produce a higher-order resonance in the 6 GHz (5925-7125 MHz) band. In addition, the coupled shorter strip is able to produce another resonant mode in the 5 GHz (5150-5850 MHz) band. Together, these two monopole strips make it possible for the biplanar monopole to achieve multiband operation in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands. The antenna design is discussed, and the numerical results are presented. © 2024 IEEE.

Much of an engineer’s implicit knowledge and experience is embedded in data from previous engineering processes. In the typical automotive structural design process, many simulation variants are created to incrementally improve relevant performance values. Engineers decide about the modifications to make to the geometry to achieve these improvements. The steps of this development process reflect the engineer’s decisions and thus her/his knowledge and experience. This implicit knowledge is potentially helpful for new projects, but is not easily accessible. This paper proposes a method to automatically extract past solutions from a database containing finite element simulation data from previous development processes. A reference model with high similarity to the problem at hand is identified in the database. Since the development process of this model is already completed, there must exist a later version of the model where the problem has been solved. The difference between the reference model and the identified improved model represents an engineer’s knowledge that was used to solve a similar problem in the past. Possible solutions identified this way are successfully used to support engineers in their decisions in new projects during the structural design process. The method is applied to pedestrian safety data from the structural design process of cars using real-world data. Copyright © 2024 by ASME.

The integration of cutting-edge technology, such as cloud computing and Clinical Decision Support (CDS) algorithms, is radically altering the healthcare system. This research digs into how Inference Engines, Bayesian Networks, Machine Learning Algorithms, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) have all played critical roles in reshaping the healthcare industry. Medical professionals may more efficiently use CDS algorithms thanks to cloud-based technologies that streamline data storage, sharing, and processing. Decision-making is aided by Inference Engines because they provide organized insights based on preset criteria. This is where Bayesian Networks come in, with their ability to represent complicated, probabilistic interactions among variables for exact diagnoses and risk assessment. Machine learning algorithms improve predictive analysis by identifying trends in large datasets, paving the way for more individualized approaches to medical care. Chatbots and sentiment analysis are only two examples of how NLP is transforming the doctor-patient relationship by teaching computers to understand human language. Those in the medical field may greatly increase their diagnostic precision, treatment efficiency, and patient outcomes by adopting these innovations. © 2023 IEEE.

With the rapid development of power transmission line construction in China, the stable operation of overhead power transmission lines has become crucial for national energy security. The frequent occurrence of safety incidents in power transmission infrastructure due to conductor galloping has led to increased focus in power sectors. Addressing the deficiencies in accuracy and coverage of existing conductor galloping monitoring technologies, this paper presents a design for a four-split interval rod conductor galloping monitoring device. This device integrates multiple sensors and RTK-based positioning technology. Additionally, it employs a frequency-adaptive GNSS/IMU loosely coupled positioning technology, achieving high-precision measurement of the conductor's status and comprehensive monitoring coverage. Experimental results indicated that this device demonstrates substantial potential for practical engineering applications. © 2024 IEEE.

High data rates are one of the most prevalent requirements in current mobile communications. To cover this and other high standards regarding performance, increasing coverage, capacity, and reliability, numerous works have proposed the development of systems employing the combination of several techniques such as Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless technologies with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) in the evolving 4G wireless communications. Our proposed system is based on the 2x2 MIMO antenna technique, which is defined to enhance the performance of radio communication systems in terms of capacity and spectral efficiency, and the OFDM technique, which can be implemented using two types of sub-carrier mapping modes: Space-Time Block Coding and Space Frequency Block Code. SFBC has been considered in our developed model. The main advantage of SFBC over STBC is that SFBC encodes two modulated symbols over two subcarriers of the same OFDM symbol, whereas STBC encodes two modulated symbols over two subcarriers of the same OFDM symbol;thus, the coding is performed in the frequency domain. Our solution aims to demonstrate the performance analysis of the Space Frequency Block Codes scheme, increasing the Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) at the receiver and decreasing the Bit Error Rate (BER) through the use of 4 QAM, 16 QAM and 64QAM modulation over a 2x2 MIMO channel for an LTE downlink transmission, in different channel radio environments. In this work, an analytical tool to evaluate the performance of SFBC - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, using two transmit antennas and two receive antennas has been implemented, and the analysis using the average SNR has been considered as a sufficient statistic to describe the performance of SFBC in the 3GPP Long Term Evolution system over Multiple Input Multiple Output channels. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
