Recently the development of Distributed Video Coding (DVC) has provided the promising theory support to realize the infrastructure of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN), which composed of autonomous hardware for capturing and transmission of quality audio-visual content. The implementation of DVC in WMSN can better solve the problem of energy constraint of the sensor nodes due to the benefit of lower computational encoder in DVC. In this paper, a practical DVC scheme, pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv(PDWZ) video coding, with slice structure and adaptive rate selection(ARS) is proposed to solve the certain problems when applying DVC into WMSN. Firstly, the proposed slice structure in PDWZ has extended the feasibility of PDWZ to work with any interleaver size used in Slepian-wolf turbo codec for heterogeneous applications. Meanwhile, based on the slice structure, an adaptive code rate selection has been proposed aiming at reduce the system delay occurred in feedback request. The simulation results clearly showed the enhancement in R-D performance and perceptual quality. It also can be observed that system delay caused by frequent feedback is greatIy reduced, which gives a promising support for WMSN with low latency and facilitates the QoS management.

A systematic fuzzy approach is developed to model fuzziness and uncertainties in the preferences of decision makers involved in a conflict. This unique fuzzy preference formulation is used within the paradigm of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution in which a given dispute is modeled in terms of decision makers, each decision maker's courses of actions or options, and each decision maker's preferences concerning the states or outcomes which could take place. In order to be able to determine the stability of each state for each decision maker and the possible equilibria or resolutions, a range of solution concepts describing potential human behavior under conflict are defined for use with fuzzy preferences. More specifically, strong and weak definitions of stability are provided for the solution concepts called Nash, general metarational, symmetric metarational, and sequential stability. To illustrate how these solution concepts can be conveniently used in practice, they are applied to a dispute over the contamination of an aquifer by a chemical company located in Elmira, Ontario, Canada.

The H.264/MPEG-4 (Advanced Video Coding) AVC video coding includes a multidirectional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy by using neighboring samples as a prediction for the samples in a block of data to be encoded. The main goal of the intra prediction is to achieve better compression efficiency. For finding the optimal prediction modes, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC adopts the full search algorithm in the standard. The high computation complexity of the full search algorithm makes the encoding of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC to be difficult to meet real time applications. In this work, we proposed a Fast Intra Prediction Mode Decision Algorithm (FIPMDA) for 4 × 4 intra blocks, which is based on the partially sampling prediction and symmetry of the adjacent angle modes, to reduce the computational time and low complexity of the 4 × 4 block intra-prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the encoder time of the intra prediction by more than 60% while maintaining similar video bit rate and quality.

In this paper, we use a lexical method to do sentence alignment for an English-Chinese corpus. Past research slows that alignment using a dictionary involves a lot of word matching and dictionary look ups. To address these two issues, we first restrict the range of candidate target sentences, based on the location of the source sentence relative to the beginning of the text. Moreover, careful empirical selection of stop words, based on word frequencies in the source text, helps to reduce the number of dictionary look ups. Experimental results show that the amount of word matching can be cut down by 75% and that of dictionary look ups by as much as 43% without sacrificing precision and recall. Another experiment was also done with twenty New York Times articles with 598 sentences and 18395 words. The resulted precision is 95.6% and the recall is 93.8%. Among all predicted alignment, 86% of the alignment is 1:1 (one source sentence to one target sentence), 8% is 1:2, and 6% is 2:1. Further analysis shows that most errors occur in alignments of types 1:2 and 2:1. Future work should focus on problems with these two alignment types.

Melodic search engines let people find music in online collections by specifying the desired melody. Comparing the query melody to every item in a large database is prohibitively slow. If melodies can be placed in a metric space, search can be sped by comparing the query to a limited number of vantage melodies, rather than the entire database. We describe a simple melody metric that is customizable using a small number of example queries. This metric allows use of a generalized vantage point tree to organize the database. We show on a standard melodic database that the general vantage tree approach achieves superior search results for query-by-humming compared to an existing vantage point tree method. We then show this method can be used as a preprocessor to speed search for non-metric melodic comparison.
