In surveillance situations, computer vision systems are often deployed to help humans perform their tasks more effectively. In a typical installation human observers are required to simultaneously monitor a number of video signals. Psychophysical research indicates that there are severe limitations in the ability of humans to monitor simultaneous signals. Do these same limitations extend to surveillance? We present a method for evaluating human surveillance performance in a situation that mimics demands of real world surveillance. A single computer monitor contained either nine display cells or four display cells. Each cell contained a stream of 2 to 4 moving objects. Observers were instructed to signal when a target event occurred - - when one of the objects entered a small square ldquoforbiddenrdquo region in the center of the display. Target events could occur individually or in groups of 2 or 3 temporally close events. The results indicate that the observers missed many targets (60%) when required to monitor 9 displays and many fewer when monitoring 4 displays (20%). Further, there were costs associated with target events occurring in close temporal succession. Understanding these limitations would help computer visions researchers to design algorithms and human-machine interfaces that result in improved overall performance.

This paper deals with two relatively less well studied problems in Textual CBR, namely visualizing and evaluating complexity of textual case bases. The first is useful in case base maintenance, the second in making informed choices regarding case base representation and tuning of parameters for the TCBR system, and also for explaining the behaviour of different retrieval/classification techniques over diverse case bases. We present an approach to visualize textual case bases by "stacking" similar cases and features close to each other in an image derived from the case-feature matrix. We propose a complexity measure called GAME that exploits regularities in stacked images to evaluate the alignment between problem and solution components of cases. GAME class , a counterpart of GAME in classification domains, shows a strong correspondence with accuracies reported by standard classifiers over classification tasks of varying complexity. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2008.

Descriptions of humans require several qualities for people to experience them as believable: human body;selfawareness, intentional states, and self impelled actions;expression of emotions;ability to use natural language;and persistent traits. Based on these we analyze non-player character Claudette Perrick in The Elders Scroll IV: Oblivion to detect how these qualities can be created in the interactive environment of a game. We derive the gameplay design patterns Awareness of Surrounding, Visual Body Damage, Dissectible Bodies, Initiative, Own Agenda, Sense of Self, Emotional Attachment, Contextual Conversational Responses, and Goal-Driven Personal Development, which point to design choices that can be made when designing believable non-player characters in games. © 2007 Authors & Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA).

Although agent-based modeling is widely regarded as a concept well-suited to the simulation of logistics systems, there has not been any quantitative comparison with discreteevent modeling or other more established concepts. As a timely check on the rising popularity of this paradigm for modeling complex systems, this paper describes a study comparing an agent-based model with a traditional discrete-event model, each of which has been implemented to a common specification. The model scenario is based on an existing application - the global repair operation of a fleet of civil aircraft high-bypass turbofan engines. Initial results, including metrics for runtime, and software size, structure, and complexity highlight the basic similarities and differences between the models. Future estimation of model maintainability will further quantify their benefits and drawbacks. It is hoped that characterizing the paradigms more fully will enable a modeler to match various parts of a model more appropriately to its problem domain.

Using microphotoluminescence (μ−PL), in dilute N GaAs1−xNx alloys, we observe a PL band far above the bandgap E0 with its peak energy following the so-called E+ transition, but with contribution from perturbed GaAs host states in a broad spectral range (>100meV). This finding is in sharp contrast to the general understanding that E+ is associated with a well-defined conduction band level (either L1c or Nx). Beyond this insight regarding the strong perturbation of the GaAs band structure caused by N incorporation, we demonstrate that a small amount of isoelectronic doping in conjunction with μ−PL allows direct observation of above-bandgap transitions that are not usually accessible by PL.

Image inpainting (or image completion) techniques use textural or structural information to repair or fill damaged potions of a picture. However, most techniques request a human to identify the portion to be inpainted. We developed a new mechanism which can automatically detect defect portions in a photo, including damages by color ink spray and scratch drawing. The mechanism is based on several filters and structural information of damages. Old photos from the author's family are used for testing. Preliminary results show that most damages can be automatically detected without human involvement. The mechanism is integrated with our inpainting algorithms to complete a fully automatic photo defects repairing system. © 2005 IEEE.

Video inpainting uses spatial-temporal information to repair defects such as spikes and lines on aged films. We propose a series of new algorithms based on adjustable thresholds to repair different varieties of aged films. The main contribution is an automatic spike and dirt detection mechanism. We prove that if appropriate threshold is once decided by the author, most damages in an aged video clip can be detected. In addition, the repairing procedure first estimates temporal information and obtain replacement blocks among several frames. Spatial information is then used to repair damages that can not be fixed by temporal information due to fast motion. The results are visually pleasant with most defects removed. Aged films may contain defects such as spikes or dirt, as well as long vertical defect lines. These defects were produced in file development or due to improper maintenance of films. We present a series of algorithms, which can detect and restore defects. In addition, the restoration technique is used with a motion tracking mechanism. Objects can be removed and holes can be inpainted. We aim to demonstrate three tools for 1) spike detection and restoration, 2) long vertical line detection and repairing, and 3) object removal and inpainting. Results of restored video clips show that our mechanisms are practical with good inpainted video quality. Copyright © 2005 ACM.

In this paper, we present a novel biometric authentication system to identify a person’s identity by his/her palmprint. In contrast to existing palmprint systems for criminal applications, the proposed system targets at the civil applications, which require identifying a person in a large database with high confidence in real-time. The system is constituted by four major components: User Interface Module, Acquisition Module, Recognition Module and External Module. More than 7,000 palmprint images have been collected to test the performance of the system. The system can identify 400 palms with a low false acceptance rate, 0.02%, and a high genuine acceptance rate, 98.83%. For verification, the system can operate at a false acceptance rate, 0.017% and a false rejection rate, 0.86%. The execution time for the whole process including image collection, preprocessing, feature extraction and matching is less than 1 second. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper we present a multimethod approach for induction of a specific class of classifiers, which can assist physicians in medical diagnosing in the case of mitral valve prolapse. Mitral valve prolapse is one of the most controversial prevalent cardiac condition and may affect up to ten percent of the population and in the worst case results in sudden death. MultiVeDec is a general framework enabling researchers to generate various intelligent tools based on machine learning. In this paper we focused on various decision tree methods, which are capable of extracting knowledge in a form closer to human perception, a feature that is very important in medical field. The experiment included classifiers with various classical single method approaches, evolutionary approaches, hybrid approaches and also our newest multimethod approach. The main concern of the latest approach is to rind a way to enable dynamic combination of methodologies to the somehow quasi unified knowledge representation. The proposed multimethod approach was capable to outperform all other tested approaches by producing classifier for diagnosing mitral valve prolapse with the highest overall and average class accuracy.
