A wide variety of predictive analytics techniques have been developed in statistics, machine learning and data mining; however, many of these algorithms take a black-box approach in which data is input and future predictions are output with no insight into what goes on during the process. Unfortunately, such a closed system approach often leaves little room for injecting domain expertise and can result in frustration from analysts when results seem snurious or confusing. In order to allow for more human-centric approaches, the visualization community has begun developing methods to enable users to incorporate expert knowledge into the pre- diction process at all stages, including data cleaning, feature selection, model building and model validation. This paper surveys current progress and trends in predictive visual ana- lytics, identifies the common framework in which predictive visual analytics systems operate, and develops a summariza- tion of the predictive analytics workfiow.

computer networks are pervasive and critical to the operation of today's businesses. While most of us take computer networks for granted, network managers who must configure, operate, and fix faults in computer networks face a daunting task that becomes more complex everyday. Ecological interface design has been shown to be a promising approach for complex systems such as power plants or petrochemical systems. computer networks are a very different work domain characterized by rapid technological change, extreme decentralization, and the existence of "soft" components. This paper presents the first work domain analysis of this new domain creating an abstraction hierarchy for general signal transfer systems and general computing networks. It shows how the abstraction hierarchy can be applied to this new domain and presents the initial work on an ecological interface design for network management.

Annotating traditional Chinese paintings for immersive virtual exhibition

We propose a new method of annotating a masterpiece of traditional Chinese painting with voice dubbings and environmental sounds. The painting was created with moving focus drawing technique without rigorous perspective. A novel algorithm is proposed to infer the 3D space of the painting according to its layout and embed the audio annotations. For exhibition, the masterpiece is scanned into a high-resolution gigapixel image for presenting the drawing details, and we develop an interactive multimedia system with a panning and zooming interface to enable smooth navigation on the giant painting and exploring the historical culture. During the navigation, the system estimates the 3D position of the user's viewpoint from his/her actions, and subsequently synthesizes a realistic stereo audio field according to the viewer's orientation and distance from the annotations in the 3D space. The proposed system provides an immersive user experience by rendering a visual-audio consistent perception. © 2012 ACM 1556-4673/2012/07-ART6 $15.00.

Sleep is a vital component of every human being. Adequate restful and restorative sleep reenergizes the body, enhances overall health and psychological well-being. Sleep hygiene, chaotic lifestyles, disorder breathing, stress, and anxiety contribute to poor sleep quality. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) sleep respiratory disorder causes temporary lapses of breathing results in gasping, choking, snoring sounds during sleep. The individual does not consciously wake up, but the brain has to start breathing again which disrupts the sleep quality. Polysomnography (PSG) sleep study is employed to diagnose sleep disorders by using either in-home or laboratory-based comprehensive tests. The untreated OSA leads to deterioration in health, performance consequences with severity including daytime sleepiness, motor vehicle accidents, workplace errors, cardiovascular morbidity, and mortality. The pre-processed, interpolated and segmented ECG signal is considered for the examination of OSA. This paper focuses on three types of deep learning classifiers-based prediction models for detection of apnea from the ECG signal. The accuracy value of Long Short Term Memory model (LSTM) is 85 percent and classifier's ability to distinguish between normal and apnea events is *** Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) classifier and Convolution Neural Network (CNN) model have an f1- score value of 0.80. The proposed LSTM model provides the optimal performance in comparison to other deep learning models used for classification with respect to area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy metrics. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sketch recognition is automated understanding of hand-drawn diagrams. Current sketch recognition systems exist for only a handful of domains, which contain on the order of 10 - 20 shapes. Our goal was to create a generalized method for recognition that could work for many domains, increasing the number of shapes that could be recognized in real-time, while maintaining a high accuracy. In an effort to effectively recognize shapes while allowing drawing freedom (both drawing-style freedom and perceptually-valid variations), we created the shape description language modeled after the way people naturally describe shapes to 1) create an intuitive and easy to understand description, providing transparency to the underlying recognition process, and 2) to improve recognition by providing recognition flexibility (drawing freedom) that is aligned with how humans perceive shapes. This paper describes the results of a study performed to see how users naturally describe shapes. A sample of 35 subjects described or drew approximately 16 shapes each. Results show a common vocabulary related to Gestalt grouping and singularities. Results also show that perception, similarity, and context play an important role in how people describe shapes. This study resulted in a language (LADDER) that allows shape recognizers for any domain to be automatically generated from a single hand-drawn example of each shape. Sketch systems for over 30 different domains have been automatically generated based on this language. The largest domain contained 923 distinct shapes, and achieved a recognition accuracy of 83% (and a top-3 accuracy of 87%) on a corpus of over 11,000 sketches, which recognizes almost two orders of magnitude more shapes than any other existing system. © 2010 ACM.

Paleoclimate proxy records from Greenland ice cores, archiving e.g. δ18O as a proxy for surface temperature, show that sudden climatic shifts called Dansgaard–Oeschger events (DO) occurred repeatedly during the last glacial interval. They comprised substantial warming of the Arctic region from cold to milder conditions. Concomitant abrupt changes in the dust concentrations of the same ice cores suggest that sudden reorganisations of the hemispheric-scale atmospheric circulation have accompanied the warming events. Genuine bistability of the North Atlantic climate system is commonly hypothesised to explain the existence of stadial (cold) and interstadial (milder) periods in Greenland. However, the physical mechanisms that drove abrupt transitions from the stadial to the interstadial state, and more gradual yet still abrupt reverse transitions, remain debated. Here, we conduct a one-dimensional data-driven analysis of the Greenland temperature and atmospheric circulation proxies under the purview of stochastic processes. We take the Kramers–Moyal equation to estimate each proxy’s drift and diffusion terms within a Markovian model framework. We then assess noise contributions beyond Gaussian white noise. The resulting stochastic differential equation (SDE) models feature a monostable drift for the Greenland temperature proxy and a bistable one for the atmospheric circulation proxy. Indicators of discontinuity in stochastic processes suggest to include higher-order terms of the Kramers–Moyal equation when modelling the Greenland temperature proxy’s evolution. This constitutes a qualitative difference in the characteristics of the two time series, which should be further investigated from the standpoint of climate dynamics. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Image inpainting (or image completion) techniques use textural or structural information to repair or fill damaged potions of a picture. However, most techniques request a human to identify the portion to be inpainted. We developed a new mechanism which can automatically detect defect portions in a photo, including damages by color ink spray and scratch drawing. The mechanism is based on several filters and structural information of damages. Old photos from the author's family are used for testing. Preliminary results show that most damages can be automatically detected without human involvement. The mechanism is integrated with our inpainting algorithms to complete a fully automatic photo defects repairing system. © 2005 IEEE.

Reconfigurable nature of embedded FPGAs (EFPGA) are commonly used hardware for system-on-chip design due to additional features of upgradability, and security with high computational powers. SoC design with high portability EFPGA has the potential to replace time-consuming, less compatible full custom SoC design. Security is a major concern of designers to avoid illegal use of IPs for SoC design from external attacks or treats without paying charges to the owner. Security challenges are associated with bitstream loading on FPGA, design functionality, and onboard memory blocks. Several techniques are used to generate secured IP are explored mainly secured bitstream generation, generating physical unclonable functions (PUF), security protocol etc. Xilinx FPGA boards are frequently used for IP design prototyping with software like Vivado tool using HDLs. Fundus imaging is widely used for the diagnosis of retinal diseases. Major ophthalmic diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are diagnosed by examining retinal fundus images. Therefore, the efficient and reliable diagnosis largely depends upon the resolution of the images. In different diseased conditions, different pathologies and landmarks (haemorrhages, microaneurysms, exudates, blood vessels, optic disc and optic cup, fovea) of the retina get affected. In clinical situations it is often not possible to obtain good high-resolution images. Here, the techniques of super-resolution can be applied. The objective of super-resolution is to obtain a high-resolution image from a low-resolution input image. In this paper, we present results of the application of enhanced deep residual networks for single image super-resolution (EDSR) on retinal fundus images. This network is based on the SRResNet architecture involving skip connections. Using the public RIGA dataset, which consists of glaucoma and normal fundus images, we have trained the model using 2x, 4x and 8x scaling with three different optimizers each (namely ADAM, Stochastic Gradient Descent and RMSprop) to determine which optimizer is best for the different scales.
