A swarm of UAVs (S-UAVs) is a spontaneous wireless network composed of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) cooperating together to upload data to the internet. In crisis cases such as flooding or earthquakes, one or more UAVs might be non-functional, resulting in a disconnected network. Due to the continuous changes in S-UAVs, one of the most reliable routing schemes is clustering. Clustering scheme splits the network into clusters with a cluster head and cluster members. The cluster head is responsible for all intra-cluster communication, which consists of communication between the clusters. The selection of the cluster head has a high impact on the performance of the routing scheme. This paper proposes a new clustered weighted scheme with redundancy to ensure end-to-end communication even with some non-functional UAVs. The proposed protocol has a new weighted formula for the primary cluster head selection. In addition, the proposed protocol selects the secondary cluster heads based on an elimination process. The parameters of the weighted formula are the distance, the speed, and the rewarding index. The rewarding index is calculated based on the latency. This protocol proposes the presence of a secondary cluster head that automatically replaces the primary cluster head whenever it is non-functional, thus ensuring the stability of the connection. The proposed scheme is simulated using MATlab. The results obtained are discussed towards the end of this paper. The obtained results conclude that this is a promising protocol to decrease data loss in a crisis case scenario.

Based on the Wiedemann effect, Magnetostrietive Displacement Sensors (MDSs) can measure displacement without contact so that it is free of wear. Therefore, compared with other displacement sensors, the MDSs has a longer service life and is more adaptable to harsh environments. The MDSs are getting more attention and are widely used in industry control system. Precision time interval is the key aspect of the MDSs. In this paper, a pico-second timing system on chip (SoC) is designed in a 180 nm CMOS process for the MDSs applications. SoC is proposed for the MDSs applications. The chip integrates a high speed comparator and a time-to-digital converter (TDC) to build a fine time measurement chain. A 32-MHz microcontroller unit (MCU) realized by RISC-V core with two-stage pipeline is realized for system control. Test results show that the comparator temporal noise is around 1 mV and the TDC achieves a resolution of 156 ps.

AI agents driven by Large Language Models (LLMs) are now ubiquitous in our daily life, so can they bring characters from games into reality? We address the integration of storytelling and AI agents driven by LLMs to develop engaging and believable fictional characters in community settings. Motivated by the potential of fictional characters to enhance social interactions, we introduce \textit{Storytelling Community AI Agents} (SCAs) and the concept of \textit{story engineering} to transform fictional game characters into "live" social entities within player communities. Our story engineering process includes three steps: (1) Character and story creation, defining the SC's personality and worldview, (2) Presenting Live Stories to the Community, allowing the agent to recount challenges and seek suggestions, and (3) Communication with community members, enabling interaction between the agent and users. We employed the LLM GPT-3 to drive our SCAs, ``David" and ``Catherine," and evaluated their performance in an online gaming community, ``DE (Alias)," on Discord. Our mixed-method analysis, based on questionnaires (N=15) and interviews (N=8) with community members, reveals that storytelling significantly enhances the engagement and believability of AI agents in community settings. © 2024, The Authors. Speech-driven gesture generation using transformer-based generative models represents a rapidly advancing area within virtual human creation. However, existing models face significant challenges due to their quadratic time and space complexities, limiting scalability and efficiency. To address these limitations, we introduce DiM-Gestor, an innovative end-to-end generative model leveraging the Mamba-2 architecture. DiM-Gestor features a dual-component framework: (1) a fuzzy feature extractor and (2) a speech-to-gesture mapping module, both built on the Mamba-2. The fuzzy feature extractor, integrated with a Chinese Pre-trained Model and Mamba-2, autonomously extracts implicit, continuous speech features. These features are synthesized into a unified latent representation and then processed by the speech-to-gesture mapping module. This module employs an Adaptive Layer Normalization (AdaLN)-enhanced Mamba-2 mechanism to uniformly apply transformations across all sequence tokens. This enables precise modeling of the nuanced interplay between speech features and gesture dynamics. We utilize a diffusion model to train and infer diverse gesture outputs. Extensive subjective and objective evaluations conducted on the newly released Chinese Co-Speech Gestures dataset corroborate the efficacy of our proposed model. Compared with Transformer-based architecture, the assessments reveal that our approach delivers competitive results and significantly reduces memory usage—approximately 2.4 times—and enhances inference speeds by 2 to 4 times. Additionally, we released the CCG dataset, a Chinese Co-Speech Gestures dataset, comprising 15.97 hours (six styles across five scenarios) of 3D full-body skeleton gesture motion performed by professional Chinese TV broadcasters. © 2024, CC BY.

COVIDx CXR-3: A Large-Scale, Open-Source Benchmark Dataset of Chest X-ray Images for computer-Aided COVID-19 Diagnostics

After more than two years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pressure of this crisis continues to devastate globally. The use of chest X-ray (CXR) imaging as a complementary screening strategy to RT-PCR testing is not only prevailing but has greatly increased due to its routine clinical use for respiratory complaints. Thus far, many visual perception models have been proposed for COVID-19 screening based on CXR imaging. Nevertheless, the accuracy and the generalization capacity of these models are very much dependent on the diversity and the size of the dataset they were trained on. Motivated by this, we introduce COVIDx CXR-3, a large-scale benchmark dataset of CXR images for supporting COVID-19 computer vision research. COVIDx CXR-3 is composed of 30,386 CXR images from a multinational cohort of 17,026 patients from at least 51 countries, making it, to the best of our knowledge, the most extensive, most diverse COVID-19 CXR dataset in open access form. Here, we provide comprehensive details on the various aspects of the proposed dataset including patient demographics, imaging views, and infection types. The hope is that COVIDx CXR-3 can assist scientists in advancing machine learning research against both the COVID-19 pandemic and related diseases. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. This paper aims to simultaneously optimize indoor wireless and daylight performance by adjusting the positions of windows and the beam directions of window-deployed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for RIS-aided outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) networks utilizing large language models (LLM) as optimizers. Firstly, we illustrate the wireless and daylight system models of RIS-aided O2I networks and formulate a joint optimization problem to enhance both wireless traffic sum rate and daylight illumination performance. Then, we present a multi-modal LLM-based window optimization (LMWO) framework, accompanied by a prompt construction template to optimize the overall performance in a zero-shot fashion, functioning as both an architect and a wireless network planner. Finally, we analyze the optimization performance of the LMWO framework and the impact of the number of windows, room size, number of RIS units, and daylight factor. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed LMWO framework can achieve outstanding optimization performance in terms of initial performance, convergence speed, final outcomes, and time complexity, compared with classic optimization methods. The building’s wireless performance can be significantly enhanced while ensuring indoor daylight performance. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Verifying quantum systems has attracted a lot of interests in the last decades. In this paper, we initialise the model checking of quantum continuous-time Markov chain (QCTMC). As a real-time system, we specify the temporal properties on QCTMC by signal temporal logic (STL). To effectively check the atomic propositions in STL, we develop a state-of-the-art real root isolation algorithm under Schanuel's conjecture;further, we check the general STL formula by interval operations with a bottom-up fashion, whose query complexity turns out to be linear in the size of the input formula by calling the real root isolation algorithm. The development of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) sensors is essential to address H₂S-related pharmacology since slow-releasing H₂S medications have been identified to be prospective options for cancer treatments. Here, we described an electrochemical sensor for highly selective and sensitive detection of aqueous H₂S, using a thin film of fumarate-based face-centered cubic (fcu)-based metal–organic frameworks (fum-fcu-MOF) modified on laser-scribed graphene (LSGE). The fum-fcu-MOF has shown a strong affinity and chemical stability to H₂S analysis. The electrochemical and H₂S catalytic properties were studied for fum-fcu-MOF/LSGE. An amperometry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques were demonstrated to validate the sensor. The resulting sensor delivered acceptable analytical parameters in terms of;detection limit (3.0 µM), dynamic range (10–500 µM), reproducibility, and stability (94.7%). The sensor's practical validity was demonstrated in bacterial cells and H₂S-releasing drug, where the sensor was able to monitor the continuous release of in-situ H₂S. The pharmacokinetics of a slow releasing H₂S donor is accessed at different time intervals and different concentration levels. Our research indicate that this fum-fcu-MOF based H₂S sensor holds potential in understanding pharmacokinetics of H₂S releasing drugs. © 2023 The Authors. Technology integration in educational settings has led to the development of novel sensor-based tools that enable students to measure and interact with their environment. Although reports from using such tools can be positive, evaluations are often conducted under controlled conditions and short timeframes. There is a need for longitudinal data collected in realistic classroom settings. However, sustained and authentic classroom use requires technology platforms to be seen by teachers as both easy to use and of value. We describe our development of a sensor-based platform to support science teaching that followed a 14-month user-centered design process. We share insights from this design and development approach, and report findings from a 6-month large-scale evaluation involving 35 schools and 1245 students. We share lessons learnt, including that technology integration is not an educational goal per se and that technology should be a transparent tool to enable students to achieve their learning goals. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Recently, channel attention-guided convolutional networks (ConvNets) have shown great advance on visual recognition tasks. However, they mainly exploit coarse first-order statistics to characterize holistic image and rarely focus on long-range feature dependencies, which limits the representation power in a certain. To handle above limitations, this paper proposes a novel attention-guided second-order pooling convolutional network (ASP-Net). ASP-Net introduces bilinear pooling that captures pairwise feature interactions to model second-order statistics. Meanwhile, it explicitly collects long-range dependencies via non-local operations, thus providing a global view in lower layers. Then, the second-order statistics and non-local context features are fused to obtain the enhanced representation for predicting channel-wise attention map and scaling convolution features. Experiment results on three commonly used datasets illuminate that ASP-Net outperforms its counterparts and achieves competitive performance.
