As Queer Human-computer Interaction (HCI) becomes an established part of the larger field, both in terms of research on and with queer populations and in terms of employing queering theories and methods, the role of queer researchers has become a timely topic of discussion. However, these discussions have largely centered around member-researcher status and positionality when working with queer populations. Based on insights gathered at multiple ACM events over the past two years, we identified two pressing issues: (1) we need to better support queer people doing HCI research not specific to queer populations, and (2) we need to identify how to best support member-researchers in leading Queer HCI while including collaborators beyond the queer community. This Special Interest Group (SIG) aims to directly address these challenges by convening a broad community of queer researchers and allies, working not only on explicitly-queer topics but across a broad range of HCI topics. © 2021 Owner/Author.

The absence of a universal and effective Global Variance Reduction (GVR) methodology poses significant challenges for accurate and efficient radiation field calculations in large-scale nuclear facilities using Monte Carlo methods. This study introduces a novel Space self-adaption Global Variance Reduction(SsGVR) method for large-scale radiation field simulations. The method dynamically adjusts the lower limit of the window weight during the iteration process by statistically considering the empty mesh rate and the average relative error. Using the NUREG-CR-6115 1/4 core benchmark problem, it was found that the computational efficiency of the SsGVR method was improved by more than three orders of magnitude compared to standard Monte Carlo simulation. Beyond its computational advantages, the SsGVR method exhibits high versatility and robustness, leveraging a straightforward approach to construct global information that circumvents intricate mathematical derivations or geometric modeling. These attributes highlight its substantial potential for advanced applications in large-scale radiation analysis.

Recently, significant research attention has been devoted to the study of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment by exploiting the unique properties of metamaterials-based integrated large arrays of inexpensive antennas. Existing research demonstrates that RISs significantly improve the physical layer performance, including the wireless coverage, achievable data rate and energy efficiency. However, the medium access control (MAC) of multiple users accessing an RIS-enabled channel is still in its infancy, while many open issues remain to be addressed. In this article, we present four typical RIS-aided multi-user scenarios with special emphasis on the MAC schemes. We then propose and elaborate upon centralized, distributed and hybrid artificial-intelligence (AI)-assisted MAC architectures in RIS-aided multi-user communications systems. In this paper, we describe the design journey of a smart clothing system, SoPhy from the research laboratory to finally being evaluated in the hospital setting. SoPhy is a smart socks-based system, designed to make physiotherapy video consultations effective for assessing lower limb issues. SoPhy is the result of a 3-year journey of development, study and refinement of a research prototype done in collaboration with a physiotherapist. Drawing on this journey, we present seven lessons that emphasize on the importance of fostering strong collaborations with clinicians to move beyond laboratory studies and reach the target health setting. We provide contextual narratives on how we designed a comfortable smart clothing for patients; how we created an intuitive mapping of sensor data for clinicians; how we integrated hospital practice in the system design, and how we managed the ethics clearance for the field evaluation. We hope that these lessons are useful for HCI and health researchers who aim to innovate the field of health but feel restricted with the little knowledge of design and electronics.

Using multiple sensors to update the status process of interest is promising in improving the information freshness. The unordered arrival of status updates at the monitor end poses a significant challenge in analyzing the timeliness performance of parallel updating systems. This work investigates the age of information (AoI) of a discrete-time dual-sensor status updating system. Specifically, the status update is generated following the zero-waiting policy. The two sensors are modeled as a geometrically distributed service time queue and a deterministic service time queue in parallel. We derive the analytical expressions for the average AoI and peak AoI using the graphical analysis method. Moreover, the connection of average AoI between discrete-time and continuous-time systems is also explored. It reveals that in dual-queue systems, the AoI results of continuous-time systems with exponential time distribution can be extended from the limit cases of discrete-time systems with geometric distribution. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our analysis and further show that randomness of service time contributes more AoI reduction than determinacy of service time in dual-queue systems in most cases, which is different from what is known about the single-queue system. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Paleoclimate proxy records from Greenland ice cores, archiving e.g. δ18O as a proxy for surface temperature, show that sudden climatic shifts called Dansgaard–Oeschger events (DO) occurred repeatedly during the last glacial interval. They comprised substantial warming of the Arctic region from cold to milder conditions. Concomitant abrupt changes in the dust concentrations of the same ice cores suggest that sudden reorganisations of the hemispheric-scale atmospheric circulation have accompanied the warming events. Genuine bistability of the North Atlantic climate system is commonly hypothesised to explain the existence of stadial (cold) and interstadial (milder) periods in Greenland. However, the physical mechanisms that drove abrupt transitions from the stadial to the interstadial state, and more gradual yet still abrupt reverse transitions, remain debated. Here, we conduct a one-dimensional data-driven analysis of the Greenland temperature and atmospheric circulation proxies under the purview of stochastic processes. We take the Kramers–Moyal equation to estimate each proxy’s drift and diffusion terms within a Markovian model framework. We then assess noise contributions beyond Gaussian white noise. The resulting stochastic differential equation (SDE) models feature a monostable drift for the Greenland temperature proxy and a bistable one for the atmospheric circulation proxy. Indicators of discontinuity in stochastic processes suggest to include higher-order terms of the Kramers–Moyal equation when modelling the Greenland temperature proxy’s evolution. This constitutes a qualitative difference in the characteristics of the two time series, which should be further investigated from the standpoint of climate dynamics. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

Satellite Federated Fine-Tuning for Foundation Models in Space Computing Power Networks

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites have promoted the application of large remote sensing foundation models for various downstream tasks. However, direct downloading of these models for fine-tuning on the ground is impeded by privacy concerns and limited bandwidth. Satellite federated learning (FL) offers a solution by enabling model fine-tuning directly on-board satellites and aggregating model updates without data downloading. Nevertheless, for large foundation models, the computational capacity of satellites is insufficient to support effective on-board fine-tuning in traditional satellite FL frameworks. To address these challenges, we propose a satellite-ground collaborative federated fine-tuning framework. The key of the framework lies in how to reasonably decompose and allocate model components to alleviate insufficient on-board computation capabilities. During fine-tuning, satellites exchange intermediate results with ground stations or other satellites for forward propagation and back propagation, which brings communication challenges due to the special communication topology of space transmission networks, such as intermittent satellite-ground communication, short duration of satellite-ground communication windows, and unstable inter-orbit inter-satellite links (ISLs). To reduce transmission delays, we further introduce tailored communication strategies that integrate both communication and computing resources. Specifically, we propose a parallel intra-orbit communication strategy, a topology-aware satellite-ground communication strategy, and a latency-minimalization inter-orbit communication strategy to reduce space communication costs. Simulation results demonstrate significant reductions in training time with improvements of approximately 33%. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Recently, rumor detection has attracted lots of research interest because of the quick development of social networks and the widely spread of rumor. The exiting studies is mainly about the open social network such as Weibo and Facebook. However, there is little research about closed social networks, especially Wechat. As a famous app with more than one billion daily active user, the tweets in Wechat can attract lots of attention, which gives the spread of rumor tweets more chance. In this paper, we empirically study the tweets spread in Wechat. We first analyze the text information and users' behavior of Wechat tweets, then we come up with several important features needed for rumor detection. Furthermore, we propose a new model which can capture the impact of both users' behavior and text information. We conduct experiments using a large tweets dataset collected in Wechat, the result shows that our proposed method can effectively detect the rumor tweets. © 2020 IEEE.

Trust-based core social graph convolution: An innovative framework for location recommendation

With the increasing popularity of location-based social networks (LBSNs), recommendation based on LBSNs has attracted wide attention in academic and industrial domains. Traditional recommendation systems face critical challenges in handling data sparsity and underutilized social trust. Existing traditional models particularly struggle to incorporate both trust-level differences and implicit relationships effectively within large-scale personalized recommendations. This limitation directly leads to aggravated data sparsity, further exacerbating cold-start scenarios and significantly reducing recommendation accuracy for long-tail items. Existing widely-adopted deep learning models, such as graph convolutional networks (GCNs), apply equal propagation weights to all neighbor nodes, which not only causes feature convergence between high-trust and ordinary users (over-smoothing) but also incurs substantial computational overhead. We propose the Trust-Based Core Graph Collaborative Filtering (TCGCF) framework, integrating trust-weighted core graph analysis with trust-constrained graph convolution. TCGCF captures both explicit and implicit trust relationships, enhances personalization, and mitigates over-smoothing. Our trust-weighted core graph analysis identifies influential users in information propagation, while the trust-constrained convolution scheme enables precise, differentiated information flow. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that TCGCF improves recommendation accuracy and computational efficiency, outperforming existing models in precision, recall, and suitability for large-scale applications. © 2025
