Herein we report the fabrication of an advanced sensor for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) at room temperature, using thin films of rare‐earth metal (RE)‐based metal–organic framework (MOF) with underlying fcu topology. This unique MOF‐based sensor is made via the in situ growth of fumarate‐based fcu ‐MOF (fum‐ fcu ‐MOF) thin film on a capacitive interdigitated electrode. The sensor showed a remarkable detection sensitivity for H 2 S at concentrations down to 100 ppb, with the lower detection limit around 5 ppb. The fum‐ fcu ‐MOF sensor exhibits a highly desirable detection selectivity towards H 2 S vs. CH 4 , NO 2 , H 2 , and C 7 H 8 as well as an outstanding H 2 S sensing stability as compared to other reported MOFs.

Alternative systems ranging from self-organized skill sharing to alternative micro-economies have been critical channels of community engagement and bonding. Technology is increasingly playing a role in the way people connect to these services at the (hyper)local level. While there has been considerable research on designing technology to support conventional, established systems of community organization and governance;mobile and ubiquitous technologies offer strong potential for alternative systems to be established in the local level. Do It Yourself (DIY) and maker movements are enabling grassroots activist groups to develop their own technologies or to hack existing tools to support bottom-up systems of self-organization, democracy and commerce. Based on these trends and the recent worldwide economic, political and societal crisis, this workshop will bring together researchers, practitioners and activists to re-envision how HCI tools can support alternative systems of local civic engagement.

Challenges of the local context such as encouraging civic engagement and facilitating collaboration to address local issues have motivated researchers and practitioners to explore the role of technologies in supporting life in cities, neighborhoods, and local communities. The goal of this workshop is to open a discussion on how to design, build and study ICT infrastructures and infrastructuring processes that contributes to this effort. We aim to create a publicly accessible repository of infrastructuring tools and to facilitate the cross-pollination of ideas about technology in local contexts among the researchers, practitioners, and residents interested in this area. At the workshop, participants will collaborate with Vancouver's residents and technology practitioners in order to explore the past, present, and future of research in this space;co-construct an infrastructuring tools repository;discuss key information challenges of local communities;and brainstorm solutions and opportunities to address them. Discussion and ideas generated will be archived online to be available to the larger research community and to local community advocates and activists.

Socially engaged methods are increasingly being used within HCI research, yet arts practice in this context has been little explored. HCI research that aligns with socially engaged arts practices encourages debate around societal challenges;for example discussion of issues surrounding the role of digital technology in sustainability, inclusion, community, identity and the politics of participation. Building on existing research, this workshop will bring together a diverse group of HCI researchers, artists and other creators whose work or interests align with socially engaged arts practice, to foster critical exploration and creative collaboration.

We present a novel approach that allows the user to feel the other's emotional status while communicating with each other in a video chat. The video chat is composed of physiological sensors and multimodal displays. In our first prototype, we employed a Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensor and a Blood Volume Pulse (BVP) sensor as they were crucial indications to human emotions. A vibrotactile motor and a RGB LED were also used in order to convey and display the other's emotion on one's wrist. Along with the hardware part, we implemented intuitive software for processing, transmitting, and displaying bio feedback data.

In order to develop a new process for concentrating and separating sodium sulfate (Na 2 SO 4 ) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO 4 ) of the bloedite by gas hydrate, the equilibrium of the ternary system H 2 O–Na 2 SO 4 –C 3 H 8 , H 2 O–MgSO 4 –C 3 H 8 and the quaternary system H 2 O–Na 2 SO 4 –MgSO 4 –C 3 H 8 with tetrahydrofuran (THF) additive were studied at 0 °C. It showed that the mass percentage of Na 2 SO 4 (MgSO 4 ) in equilibrium liquid was higher than in feed. It proved that gas hydrate could be used to the concentration and separation of Na 2 SO 4 and MgSO 4 . The solubility of the propane was calculated based on the Krichevsky–Kasarnovsky equation. The extended Pitzer model of electrolyte–electrolyte–nonelectrolyte–water system was derived and applied into H 2 O–Na 2 SO 4 –MgSO 4 –C 3 H 8 system and its sub-systems. The necessary thermodynamic parameters had been derived from a least-squares optimization program. The model calculation value was in good agreement with experimental solubility for ternary and quaternary mixtures, which indicated that the Pitzer model could be successfully used to predict the phase equilibrium of the electrolyte–electrolyte–nonelectrolyte–water systems containing gas hydrate.

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with an inherent notched band and steep slopes has been presented and implemented with the low temperature cofired ceramic technology. The filter is realized by a stepped-impedance T-shaped resonator (SITR) coupled to a pair of quarter-wavelength input/output feed-lines. The proposed SITR can facilitate not only a notched band, but also sharp roll-off characteristics. Measured results agree well with the HFSS simulated results. The whole size of the UWB filter is only 6.0×6.0×1.92 mm 3 .
