In this paper we point out the relevance of and the need for a theoretical discussion around UX research and practice. Although there is a good coverage of methodological and design related topics in the HCI literature, there is still a lack of theoretical focus in the rapidly increasing work on user experience (UX). We analyzed 122 individual items on theories collected in a CHI'11 special interest group session on UX theories and theoretical frameworks. The data set was filtered and categorized in several iterations, resulting in 56 items distributed over 7 major theory categories and related to 9 relevant disciplines. The categories are an initial mapping of the field and point towards the directions for further conceptual and theoretical clarification. Our results help to explore the multi-disciplinary nature of UX and to build a more solid foundation for UX research and practice. © 2012 Authors.

We propose a simplified analog design cycle to generate reconfigurable and accurate prototype of several analog ICs. On applying the design cycle a comprehensive design methodology is being developed that make designs customizable and adaptable by a field user. The basic design of a second generation current controlled current conveyor is first analyzed to estimate the basic circuit configuration to verify its basic functionality. Secondly using its small signal equivalent model, ac and dc characteristics are being derived in terms of threshold voltage of transistors, present in the circuit. Indeed, with the help of floating gate transistors, which has a feature of post fabrication programmability of its threshold voltage, an accurate and reconfigurable prototype of the design can be obtained. The circuit is simulated using BSIM3 level49 MOSFET models in T-Spice 0.35μm CMOS process. Various Characteristics of CCCII are being derived and estimated their sensitivity with respect to threshold voltage of respective floating-gate transistors. The simulated results demonstrate that by programming threshold voltages, fine tuning of circuit specifications with wide spectrum can be achieved. The designs fabricated using our methodology can be adaptive to any desired value of specification with very high precision (about 13bit programming precision can attain with floating gate transistor). It can also make Analog ICs immune to most drawbacks like processes variations, device degradation by introducing new possibilities such as self correction and adaptability.

Summary form only given. Although Multi-touch devices have become common in the consumer world, users have sacrificed the tactile feedback afforded by physical buttons. The Bristol Interaction and Graphics group has been exploring various technical solutions to create the next generation of touch interfaces that support multi-point haptic feedback as well as dynamic allocation of views to different users. In this talk I will present UltraHaptics a multi-point haptic feedback system that allows users to experience haptic feedback simultaneously in multiple locations on an interactive surface. This feedback is created in midair - so users don't have to touch or hold any device to experience it. Another system I will be talking about it PiVOT, a tabletop system where users can come together and view shared content or by leaning forward can get personalised views that are only visible from their particular view-point. This talk will present our recent research endeavors in this direction and present some design challenges.

Multi-agent systems, which are composed of autonomous agents, have been successfully employed as a modeling paradigm in many scenarios. However, it is challenging to guarantee the correctness of their behaviors due to the complex nature of the autonomous agents, especially when they have stochastic characteristics. In this work, we propose to apply probabilistic model checking to analyze multi-agent systems. A modeling language called PMA is defined to specify such kind of systems, and LTL property and logic of knowledge combined with probabilistic requirements are supported to analyze system behaviors. Initial evaluation indicates the effectiveness of our current progress; meanwhile some challenges and possible solutions are discussed as our ongoing work.

At CHI2011 we organized a SIG session asking the question "What theoretical roots do we build on, if any, in UX research?" Overall, 122 single items from about 70 participants were collected, which corroborates the relevance of and interest in this topic. Whilst the theoretical foundations for UX research are not yet established, those responses can serve as candidate resources for setting the theoretical directions. A primary conclusion from the SIG discussion is that the CHI community needs theories in UX research and practice. A major contribution of the workshop will be to clarify the applicability and transferability of different theories, theoretical foundations, concepts in informing UX design and evaluation in both research and practice. In particular we will look into theories that have already been applied in practice. © 2012 Authors.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), trap coverage has recently been proposed to tradeoff between the availability of sensor nodes and sensing performance. It offers an efficient framework to tackle the challenge of limited resources in large scale sensor networks. Currently, existing works only studied the theoretical foundation of how to decide the deployment density of sensors to ensure the desired degree of trap coverage. However, the practical issues such as how to efficiently schedule sensor node to guarantee trap coverage under an arbitrary deployment is still left untouched. In this paper, we formally formulate the Minimum Weight Trap Cover Problem and prove it is an NP-hard problem. To solve the problem, we introduce a bounded approximation algorithm, called Trap Cover Optimization (TCO) to schedule the activation of sensors while satisfying specified trap coverage requirement. The performance of MinimumWeight Trap Coverage we find is proved to be at most O(ρ) times of the optimal solution, where ρ is the density of sensor nodes in the region. To evaluate our design, we perform extensive simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm and show that our algorithm achieves at least 14% better energy efficiency than the state-of-the-art solution. © 2011 IEEE.

Case-based reasoning combined with statistics for diagnostics and prognosis

Many approaches used for diagnostics today are based on a precise model. This excludes diagnostics of many complex types of machinery that cannot be modelled and simulated easily or without great effort. Our aim is to show that by including human experience it is possible to diagnose complex machinery when there is no or limited models or simulations available. This also enables diagnostics in a dynamic application where conditions change and new cases are often added. In fact every new solved case increases the diagnostic power of the system. We present a number of successful projects where we have used feature extraction together with case-based reasoning to diagnose faults in industrial robots, welding, cutting machinery and we also present our latest project for diagnosing transmissions by combining Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with statistics. We view the fault diagnosis process as three consecutive steps. In the first step, sensor fault signals from machines and/or input from human operators are collected. Then, the second step consists of extracting relevant fault features. In the final diagnosis/prognosis step, status and faults are identified and classified. We view prognosis as a special case of diagnosis where the prognosis module predicts a stream of future features.

True 3D display systems like volumetric displays allow generation of autostereoscopic, multi-view 3D content that has real physical dimensions. However their uptake as a research tool within the HCI community is limited largely due to difficulties in buying or building such displays. The choice of commercially available systems is limited and constrains the flexibility of their use in terms of interaction capabilities, display features and integration with multi-display environments (MDEs). In this paper we describe the steps involved in creating custom volumetric display from easily available components. By building a touch-enabled volumetric display we walk-through the steps involved in the process. This will enable us to explore various interactive systems, associated techniques and challenges related to integration of the device into a MDE.

Scan test is the standard method, practiced by industry, that has consistently provided high fault coverage due to high controllability and high observability. The scan chain allows to control and observe the internal signals of a chip. However, this property also facilitates hackers to use scan architecture as a means to breach chip security. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a new method called Secure and testable Scan design through Test Key Randomization(SSTKR). SSTKR is a key based method to prevent hackers from stealing secret information. Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) is used to generate authentication keys to be embedded in test vectors. Unique key is used for every test vector which prevents scan based side channel attacks effectively. Any attempt to steal secret information will lead to a randomized response. SSTKR has very low area and test time overhead without performance penalty. Our approach also facilitates in-field test of the chip.

Improvements in cameras, computer vision, and machine learning are enabling real-time object recognition in interactive systems. Reliable recognition of uninstrumented objects opens up exciting new scenarios using the real-world objects that surround us. At the same time, it introduces the need to understand and manage the uncertainty and ambiguities that are inherent to such sensing. This paper examines this problem in the context of LEGO OASIS, a camera and projector-based system that recognizes LEGO toys and augments them with projected digital content. We focus on an interaction language to model the creation and manipulation of relationships between physical objects and their digital capabilities. We use this set of abstractions to examine different notions of recognition errors and explore interactive approaches to overcoming fundamental challenges in interactive object-aware systems.
