Sign language is a helpful visual technique that can be utilized by individuals who have difficulty communicating verbally. This language is used frequently by people as well. However, the vast majority of individuals don't understand sign language very well, and as a result, they frequently struggle when attempting to communicate with someone who is fluent in it. The community of people who have trouble speaking or hearing will benefit from an initiative called the Sign Language Recognition System. It is extremely challenging for deaf mutes to communicate, which is why we require a linguistic framework to understand what it is that they are attempting to express. In light of this, we present in this research an American Sign Language (ASL) handwriting translator that is built on convolutional neural networks. Instructing computers to recognize specific characters is one way to accomplish this goal. The Support Vector Machine (SVM) and the Convolutional Neural Network are two types of artificial neural networks that are being utilized in our project we have suggest the identification of American Sign Language. In addition, the Decision Tree and Voting Classifier are applied to the dataset in order to do an analysis. We have demonstrated the design and execution of an American Sign Language (ASL) translator that also incorporates fingerspelling as a direct consequence of this. © 2023 IEEE.

A time-frequency diagram is a commonly used visualization for observing the time-frequency distribution of radio signals and analyzing their time-varying patterns of communication states in radio monitoring and management. While it excels when performing short-term signal analyses, it becomes inadaptable for long-term signal analyses because it cannot adequately depict signal time-varying patterns in a large time span on a space-limited screen. This research thus presents an abstract signal time-frequency (ASTF) diagram to address this problem. In the diagram design, a visual abstraction method is proposed to visually encode signal communication state changes in time slices. A time segmentation algorithm is proposed to divide a large time span into time slices. Three new quantified metrics and a loss function are defined to ensure the preservation of important time-varying information in the time segmentation. An algorithm performance experiment and a user study are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the diagram for long-term signal analyses. © 2022 IEEE.

Few-shot learning (FSL) aims to learn novel concepts from very limited examples. However, most FSL methods suffer from the issue of lacking robustness in concept learning. Specifically, existing FSL methods usually ignore the diversity of region contents that may contain concept-irrelevant information such as the background, which would introduce bias/noise and degrade the performance of conceptual representation learning. To address the above-mentioned issue, we propose a novel metric-based FSL method termed region-adaptive concept aggregation network or RCA-Net. Specifically, we devise a region-adaptive concept aggregator (RCA) to model the relationships of different regions and capture the conceptual information in different regions, which are then integrated in a weighted average manner to obtain the conceptual representation. Consequently, robust concept learning can be achieved by focusing more on the concept-relevant information and less on the conceptual-irrelevant information. We perform extensive experiments on three popular visual recognition benchmarks to demonstrate the superiority of RCA-Net for robust few-shot learning. In particular, on the Caltech-UCSD Birds-200-2011 (CUB200) dataset, the proposed RCA-Net significantly improves 1-shot accuracy from 74.76% to 78.03% and 5-shot accuracy from 86.84% to 89.83% compared with the most competitive counterpart.

This study investigates breast cancer detection through a detailed analysis of feature extraction methods and machine learning models applied to CT scan images. By utilizing the advanced features of the Wavelet Transform, Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), and Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), the proposed model aimed to enhance the representation of breast tissue properties that are critical for an accurate diagnosis. The comparative analysis includes support vector machines (SVM), k-Nearest neighbors (KNN), convolutional neural networks (CNN), recurrent neural networks (RNN), and a custom model. With an astounding accuracy rate of 98.8%, CNN showed off its amazing performance and capacity to identify intricate patterns in medical images. By elucidating the degree to which each model distinguishes between cancerous and noncancerous regions, confusion matrices provide a comprehensive analysis. The findings emphasize how crucial it is to select particular machine learning algorithms and feature extraction techniques when making a breast cancer diagnosis. Even though CNN outperformed the other models, it was evident that these techniques should be applied cautiously because each model had benefits of its own. This work contributes to the field of medical image analysis and establishes the foundation for future research that will lead to new opportunities and increase diagnosis accuracy. The use of medical imaging and machine learning technologies to improve patient outcomes through improved breast cancer diagnosis is one exciting application of the research findings. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper studies the Partial Optimal Transport (POT) problem between two unbalanced measures with at most n supports and its applications in various AI tasks such as color transfer or domain adaptation. There is hence a need for fast approximations of POT with increasingly large problem sizes in arising applications. We first theoretically and experimentally investigate the infeasibility of the state-of-the-art Sinkhorn algorithm for POT, which consequently degrades its qualitative performance in real world applications like point-cloud registration. To this end, we propose a novel rounding algorithm for POT, and then provide a feasible Sinkhorn procedure with a revised computation complexity of Oe(n2/Ε4). Our rounding algorithm also permits the development of two first-order methods to approximate the POT problem. The first algorithm, Adaptive Primal-Dual Accelerated Gradient Descent (APDAGD), finds an Ε-approximate solution to the POT problem in Oe(n2.5/Ε). The second method, Dual Extrapolation, achieves the computation complexity of Oe(n2/Ε), thereby being the best in the literature. We further demonstrate the flexibility of POT compared to standard OT as well as the practicality of our algorithms on real applications where two marginal distributions are unbalanced. Radio-Frequency (RF)-based Human Activity Recognition (HAR) rises as a promising solution for applications unamenable to techniques requiring computer visions. However, the scarcity of labeled RF data due to their non-interpretable nature poses a significant obstacle. Thanks to the recent breakthrough of foundation models (FMs), extracting deep semantic insights from unlabeled visual data become viable, yet these vision-based FMs fall short when applied to small RF datasets. To bridge this gap, we introduce FM-Fi, an innovative cross-modal framework engineered to translate the knowledge of vision-based FMs for enhancing RF-based HAR systems. FM-Fi involves a novel cross-modal contrastive knowledge distillation mechanism, enabling an RF encoder to inherit the interpretative power of FMs for achieving zero-shot learning. It also employs the intrinsic capabilities of FM and RF to remove extraneous features for better alignment between the two modalities. The framework is further refined through metric-based few-shot learning techniques, aiming to boost the performance for predefined HAR tasks. Comprehensive evaluations evidently indicate that FM-Fi rivals the effectiveness of vision-based methodologies, and the evaluation results provide empirical validation of FM-Fi's generalizability across various environments. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

In modern datacenters, memory disaggregation un-packs monolithic servers to build independent network-connected compute and memory pools, greatly improving resource uti-lization. Existing memory-disaggregated key-value stores adopt ownership sharing or ownership partitioning for request scheduling and they all show poor performance and scalability. The former generates multiple cache misses and multiple network round trips due to poor cache locality, while the latter fails to fully use resources on all Compute Nodes (CNs) due to load imbalance. In this paper, we propose Seastar, a fast and scalable key-value store that achieves high cache locality as well as load balancing. To enable high concurrency and ensure linearizability, Seastar exploits a self-verification version chain to provide out-of-place atomic updates and ensure consistent reads. To improve cache locality, Seastar leverages a pair-based ownership assigning scheme to assign the processing permission of requests corre-sponding to each key to a CN pair through two independent hash functions. To ensure load balancing among CNs, Seastar proposes a decentralized power-of-two-choices routing scheme to route the requests to the less-loaded CNs in CN pairs for handling. Experimental results demonstrate that Seastar improves the throughput by up to 6.7x and significantly reduces the latency compared with state-of-the-art memory-disaggregated key-value stores. © 2024 IEEE.

Text-based Person Retrieval (TPR) plays a pivotal role in video surveillance systems for safeguarding public safety. As a fine-grained retrieval task, TPR faces the significant challenge of precisely capturing highly discriminative features across image and text modalities. Existing methods primarily focus on establishing modality-shared feature spaces to bridge cross-modal discrepancies. However, these methods are prone to disturbances from irrelevant information, such as background noises in the visual modality, and often over-emphasize specific local regions while neglecting the capture of diverse discriminative modal features, thereby limiting the robustness of cross-modal matching. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework, termed the Diverse Co-saliency Feature Learning Network (DCFL), which mines the co-saliency information between image and text modalities and enhances the diversity of cross-modal discriminative features while mitigating the interference of noise. Specifically, to construct cross-modal co-saliency features, we devise the Intra-modal Saliency Feature Learning (ISFL) and Cross-modal Saliency Feature Matching (CSFM) modules. ISFL employs a weighted mask mechanism to guide the model in reducing the impact of noise information in both modalities. Complementing ISFL, CSFM establishes consistent relationships between saliency features across modalities, leveraging text descriptions to align pedestrian-relevant visual regions. Furthermore, we propose the Diverse Co-saliency Feature Mining (DCFM) to bolster the diversity of discriminative co-saliency features across both image and text modalities. This module integrates a diversity regularization term, enabling the extraction of varied visual cues and capturing comprehensive features of the target individual. Extensive benchmark experiments demonstrate a substantial superiority of our approach over the state-of-the-art methods. The code will be released publicly. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Dimensionality reduction is an important step for various applications where usage of the internet and multimedia systems is involved which requires huge bandwidth and storage space. This paper presents Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm based two new approaches to feature selection for dimensionality reduction. In first approach, PCA is used to extract the features (eigenvectors) and defines feature set based on computation of knee point and BB-BC optimization algorithm, in turn selects an optimal subset from the predefined feature set. In the second approach, PCA is used only for feature extraction and BB-BC optimization algorithm is used for optimal feature selection from all extracted features. Olivetti research Laboratory (ORL) face database has been used for performing the experiment and recognition rate is the parameter to be optimized for face recognition as an application area. The experimentation proves BB-BC as a powerful soft computing technique to solve such NP hard problems. © 2023 IEEE.
