The basal ganglia play an important role in motor control and their malfunction is implicated in several disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD), in which dopamine concentration is greatly reduced. This is associated with changes in their firing patterns, evidenced by increase in firing rate of output nuclei of basal ganglia and synchronization between neurons of different micro-circuitry of basal ganglia. The most effective way to alleviate the symptoms of PD is to take Levodopa which replenishes dopamine storage in the brain. However, long-term use of Levodopa results in motor fluctuations and dyskinesia. Here, we developed a conductance-based computational model of basal ganglia which considers modulatory effects of dopamine on its target nucleus, that is on striatum. This model can be used to investigate the effect of variations of the dopamine levels on motor fluctuation. Moreover, the effect of applying deep brain electrical stimulation on different nuclei of basal ganglia can be investigated through the proposed model.

This paper presents the research on the development of neural network based non-linear controllers for an airplane UAV. Multi-layer perceptrons are used for the training of networks, both off-line and on-line. The data required for off-line training is generated from a validated non-linear flight dynamics model of the Cal Poly Pomona 12' Telemaster UAV. The off-line trained network using multilayer perceptrons replaces the inverse transformation required for feedback linearization. On-line training is then accomplished to account for the inversion and modeling error. The controllers are tested in the software-in-the-loop simulation environment using FlightGear Flight Simulator. Simulation results compared with flight data are shown. Also shown are the results in the presence of sensor noise.

In this work, the change in mechanical properties, microstructure and wear rate of high leaded tin bronze material was studied after multidirectional forging (MDF) process. The total equivalent strain of 0.75 was applied during MDF process result in the improvement of ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness and wear rate along with maintained ductility with the increase in the number of MDF pass. The initial average grain size of 120 nm was refined to the final grain size of 37 nm. The transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope and optical microscope was used for the microstructure study of the undeformed, MDForged and wear worn surfaces.

Feature based Summarization of Customers’ Reviews of Online Products

With the growing availability and popularity of opinion-rich resources such as review forums for the product sold online, choosing the right product from a large number of products have become difficult for the user. For trendy product, the number of customers’ opinions available can be in the thousands. It becomes hard for the customers to read all the reviews and if he reads only a few of those reviews, then he may get a biased view about the product. Makers of the products may also feel difficult to maintain, keep track and understand the customers’ views for the products. Several research works have been proposed in the past to address these issues, but they have certain limitations: The systems implemented are completely opaque, the reviews are not easier to perceive and are time consuming to analyze because of large irrelevant information apart from actual opinions about the features, the feature based summarization system that are implemented are more generic ones and static in nature. In this research, we proposed a dynamic system for feature based summarization of customers’ opinions for online products, which works according to the domain of the product. We are extracting online reviews for a product on periodic bases, each time after extraction, we carry out the following work: Firstly, identification of features of a product from customers’ opinions is done. Next, for each feature, its corresponding opinions’ are extracted and their orientation or polarity (positive/negative) is detected. The final polarity of feature-opinions pairs is calculated. At last, feature based summarizations of the reviews are generated, by extracting the relevant excerpts with respect to each feature-opinions pair and placing it into their respective feature based cluster. These feature based excerpts can easily be digested by the user.

Most of the patter search algorithms in literature are mostly string based and do not concentrate on finding sequential patterns with constraints in a given database. Also in query languages such as SQL or MySQL, the select clause does not allow the use of the non-aggregate functions as part of query compilation. The objective of this work is to propose a pattern mining algorithm which may be embedded into SQL or MySQL Query languages so that we can search for presence of sequential pattern in the database. The algorithm makes use of sliding sequential patterns with three look-ahead elements in the event of any mismatch.

Component based software development has gained a lot of practical importance in the field of software engineering from several researchers and also from industry perspective. Finding components for efficient software reuse is one of the important problems aimed by researchers. Clustering reduces the search space of components by grouping similar entities together thus ensuring reduced time complexity as it reduces the search time for component retrieval. In this research, we instigate a new a generalized approach for clustering a given set of documents or text files or components by defining a new similarity function called hybrid XOR function for the purpose of finding degree of similarity between two document sets or software components. We construct a matrix called similarity matrix of the order n-1 by n for a given set of n documents or components or patterns by applying hybrid XOR function. We define and design the algorithm for component or document clustering which has the input as similarity matrix and output being set of clusters formed dynamically as compared to other clustering algorithms that predefine the count of clusters. The output is a set of highly cohesive pattern groups or documents. The approach can be justified as it carries out very simple computational logic and efficient in terms of processing with reduced search space and can be also be used in general for document clustering or software component clustering.

Toward a Better Understanding of Population Genetics: Pop!World-a Virtual, Inquiry-Based Tool for Teaching Population Genetics

Population genetics is fundamental to understanding evolutionary theory, and is taught in most introductory biology/evolution courses. Many students are unaware that understanding this topic requires pertinent knowledge of mathematics and consequently struggle with the subject. As a response to this problem, a virtual tool (Pop!World) was developed that teaches introductory population genetics through intuitive, inquirybased visual discoveries. In seven modules students test hypotheses pertaining to the tenants of Mendelian and population genetics. The use of these exercises in a large introductory evolution (1,500+) course as part of a lab unit is described. Survey responses indicate that students perceive the tool as helpful, and a significantly higher interest in the field of evolution is reported after completion of the Pop!World section. Evaluations of multiple student assessments suggest an increased performance in the population genetics section of the course. Generally, we conclude that the visual and modular nature of PopWorld! represents a valuable approach to improving the understanding of the concepts of population genetics. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

The cloud computing paradigm is considered as the next-generation of IT technology. This paper narrates a brief survey about the existing approaches in web services composition. The main research areas in web services are related to discovery, security, and composition. Among all these areas, web services composition turns out to be a challenging one, because within the service-oriented computing domain, Web service composition is an effective recognition to satisfy the hastily changing requirements of business. Therefore, the Web service composition has unfolded broadly in the research side. However, the current attempts to classify Web service composition is not appropriate to the objectives. This paper proposes a novel classification matrix for Web service composition, that distinguishes between the context and technology dimension. The context dimension is aimed at analyzing the QoS influence on the effort of Web service composition, while the technology dimension focuses on the technique influence on the effort. Finally, this paper provides a suggestion to improve the quality of service selection those participates in the composition process with Cskyline approach using agents.

This article investigates the problem of estimating the state of discretized hyperbolic scalar partial differential equations. It uses a Godunov scheme to discretize the socalled Lighthill-Whitham-Richards equation with a triangular flux function, and proves that the resulting nonlinear dynamical system can be decomposed in a piecewise affine manner. Using this explicit representation, the system is written as a switching dynamical system (hybrid system), with an exponential number of modes. The estimation problem is posed using Kalman filtering in each of the linear mode, and the approach becomes computationally tractable by tracking the mode evolution as the estimation is performed at each time step. Numerical results are presented using the Mobile Millennium data set, and compared to results obtained using ensemble Kalman filtering, which is used for estimation in traffic monitoring.
