Maintenance and management of urban sewage systems are critical for public health and environmental sustainability. Manholes play a crucial role in these systems, providing access points for inspection, maintenance, and environmental protection. Neglected or improperly closed manholes pose significant risks, including accidents, property damage, and environmental pollution. Sewage overflow adds further complications, leading to health hazards and infrastructure damage. This paper presents a deep learning based model for manhole and sewage overflow detection. Utilizing OpenCV for image processing and DarkNet for model integration, proposed system accurately identifies open/closed manholes, and sewage overflows with high precision rates of 97%, 99.87%, and 96.27%, respectively. By automating the maintenance, these solutions contribute to the building of smart cities that enhances safety, reduces operational costs, and safeguards the environment. © 2024 IEEE.

Satellite image processing is a multidomain task which involves design of image capturing, denoising, segmentation, feature extraction, feature reduction, classification, and post-processing tasks. A wide variety of satellite image processing models are proposed by researchers, and each of them has different data and process requirements. For instance, the image capturing module might obtain images in layered form, while feature extraction module might require data in 2D or 3D forms. Moreover, performance of these models also varies due to changes in internal process parameters and dataset parameters, which limits their accuracy and scalability when applied to real-time scenarios. To reduce the probability of these limitations, a novel high-efficiency temporal engine for real-time satellite image classification using augmented incremental transfer learning is proposed and discussed in this text. The model initially captures real-time satellite data using Google’s Earth Engine and processes it using a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) via backscatter coefficient analysis. These coefficients indicate average intensity value of Precision Image (PRI) when evaluated over a distributed target. Due to extraction of backscattering coefficients, the model is capable of representing crop images in VV (vertical transmit, vertical receive), and HV (horizontal transmit vertical receive) modes. Thereby assisting the CNN model to extract a wide variety of features from input satellite image, which classifies these datasets (original, VV, and VH) into different crop categories. The classified images are further processed via an incremental learning layer, which assists in visual identification of affected regions. Due to use of incremental learning and CNN for classification, the proposed TRSAITL model is capable of achieving an average accuracy of 97.8% for crop type and severity of damage detection, with an average PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of 29.

RAW image serves as the foundation for camera imaging, which resides at the very beginning of the pipeline that generates sRGB images. Unfortunately, owing to special considerations, the information-rich RAW images are forfeited by default in most existing applications. To regain the RAW image, some works attempt to restore RAW images from RGB images. They focus on designing handcrafted model-based methods or complicated networks, however, ignoring the special property of RAW image, i.e., high dynamic range. To make up for this deficiency, we introduce a novel soft supervision, derived from the high dynamic range. Specifically, we propose to soften the original ground-truth as a multivariate Gaussian distribution so that networks could learn much more information. Then, we introduce a soft supervision driven network (SSDNet), based on convolution and transformer, for effectively restoring RAW images from RGB images. Quantitative and qualitative results show the promising restoration performance of RGB-to-RAW. In particular, our method achieved fifth place in the S7 track of AIM Reversed ISP Challenge. The rapid growth in the number of scientific documents makes it increasingly necessary to provide researchers with efficient paper recommendation services. Since scientific documents contain many mathematical expressions and rich text information, effectively mining this information to improve recommendation quality is a challenging and necessary task. Therefore, this paper proposes a method that fuses content-based and Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) introducing the multi-head attention mechanism for scientific document recommendation. The method employs Hesitant Fuzzy Set (HFS) and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) to calculate the similarity between mathematical expressions and their context, respectively, and utilizes GCN to learn the complex relationships between nodes and mine the potential similarity between nodes. Then, the multi-head attention mechanism is introduced to dynamically assign importance weights to neighbor nodes to enhance the expression of embedding vectors, thereby generating more accurate and personalized recommendation lists. Experimental results show that the method performs well on both Ntcir and extended Chinese datasets, achieving maximum F1_Score vales of 0.817 and 0.837 at Top-50 and Top-30, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation via Weak User Interaction and Temporal Modulation

In unsupervised video object segmentation(UVOS), the whole video might segment the wrong target due to the lack of initial prior information. Also, in semi-supervised video object segmentation(SVOS), the initial video frame with a fine-grained pixel-level mask is essential to good segmentation accuracy. It is expensive and laborious to provide the accurate pixel-level masks for each training sequence. To address this issue, We present a weak user interactive UVOS approach guided by a simple human-made rectangle annotation in the initial frame. We first interactively draw the region of interest by a rectangle, and then we leverage the mask RCNN(region-based convolutional neural networks) method to generate a set of coarse reference labels for subsequent mask propagations. To establish the temporal correspondence between the coherent frames, we further design two novel temporal modulation modules to enhance the target representations. We compute the earth mover's distance(EMD)-based similarity between coherent frames to mine the co-occurrent objects in the two images, which is used to modulate the target representation to highlight the foreground target. We design a cross-squeeze temporal modulation module to emphasize the co-occurrent features across frames, which further helps to enhance the foreground target representation. We augment the temporally modulated representations with the original representation and obtain the compositive spatio-temporal information, producing a more accurate video object segmentation(VOS) model. The experimental results on both UVOS and SVOS datasets including Davis2016,FBMS, Youtube-VOS, and Davis2017, show that our method yields favorable accuracy and complexity. Ordinal real-world data such as concept hierarchies, ontologies, genealogies, or task dependencies in scheduling often has the property to not only contain pairwise comparable, but also incomparable elements. Order diagrams provide an important tool for understanding and thus discovering knowledge in such data. Easily readable drawings of such order diagrams are hard to come by, even for small ordered sets. Many attempts were made to transfer classical graph drawing approaches to order diagrams. Although these methods produce satisfying results for some ordered sets, they unfortunately perform poorly in general. In this work, we present the novel algorithm DimDraw to decompose an ordered set (e.g., a concept hierarchy) in linear orders and to produce a corresponding order diagram. This algorithm is based on a relation between the dimension of an ordered set and the bipartiteness of its transitive incompatibility graph. To evaluate the quality of the algorithm, a user study was conducted where generated drawings were compared with ones from state-of-the-art drawing algorithms. © 2023 Brown University. In digital security, Reversible Adversarial Examples (RAE) blend adversarial attacks with Reversible Data Hiding (RDH) within images to thwart unauthorized access. Traditional RAE methods, however, compromise attack efficiency for the sake of perturbation concealment, diminishing the protective capacity of valuable perturbations and limiting applications to white-box scenarios. This paper proposes a novel Dual-Phase merging Reversible Adversarial Example (DP-RAE) generation framework, combining a heuristic black-box attack and RDH with Grayscale Invariance (RDH-GI) technology. This dual strategy not only evaluates and harnesses the adversarial potential of past perturbations more effectively but also guarantees flawless embedding of perturbation information and complete recovery of the original image. Experimental validation reveals our method's superiority, secured an impressive 96.9% success rate and 100% recovery rate in compromising black-box models. In particular, it achieved a 90% misdirection rate against commercial models under a constrained number of queries. This marks the first successful attempt at targeted black-box reversible adversarial attacks for commercial recognition models. This achievement highlights our framework's capability to enhance security measures without sacrificing attack performance. Moreover, our attack framework is flexible, allowing the interchangeable use of different attack and RDH modules to meet advanced technological requirements. © 2024 ACM.

A Scalable Algorithm for Fair Influence Maximization with Unbiased Estimator

This paper studies the fair influence maximization problem with efficient algorithms. In particular, given a graph G, a community structure C consisting of disjoint communities, and a budget k, the problem asks to select a seed set S (||S|| = k) that maximizes the influence spread while narrowing the influence gap between different communities. This problem derives from some significant social scenarios, such as health interventions (e.g. suicide/HIV prevention) where individuals from racial minorities or LGBTQ communities may be disproportionately excluded from the benefits of the intervention. To depict the concept of fairness in the context of influence maximization, researchers have proposed various notions of fairness, where the welfare fairness notion that better balances fairness level and influence spread has shown promising effectiveness. However, the lack of efficient algorithms for optimizing the objective function under welfare fairness restricts its application to networks of only a few hundred nodes. In this paper, we modify the objective function of welfare fairness to maximize the exponentially weighted sum and the logarithmically weighted sum over all communities' influenced fractions (utility). To achieve efficient algorithms with theoretical guarantees, we first introduce two unbiased estimators: one for the fractional power of the arithmetic mean and the other for the logarithm of the arithmetic mean. Then, by adapting the Reverse Influence Sampling (RIS) approach, we convert the optimization problem to a weighted maximum coverage problem. We also analyze the number of reverse reachable sets needed to approximate the fair influence at a high probability. Finally, we present an efficient algorithm that guarantees 1 - 1/e - ϵ (positive objective function) or 1 + 1/e + ϵ (negative objective function) approximation for any small ϵ > 0.
