Multimodal Labor Exploitation Detections for Taiwan Distant Water Fishing Industry

Taiwan plays a significant role in global seafood supply chains, accounting for approximately 10% of global tuna catches. The country is a substantial producer of tuna, shrimp, and squid, and its seafood industry is worth an estimated $1.3 billion annually. The Taiwan Distant Water Fishing (DWF) industry faces several challenges, including concerns about labor practices and illegal fishing. However, the government is working to address these issues and improve the industry’s sustainability. This research addresses labor exploitation, specifically within Taiwan’s DWF industry. The proposed research introduces a Mobile face verification system (MFVS) to overcome human error in work-hour recording. A multimodal labor exploitation detection system is also developed, utilizing Retrained-You Only Look Once-v7 and the Global Fishing Watch (GFW) model. The multimodal performance is evaluated using DWF data, demonstrating superior performance to the GFW model. The overall accuracy of the multimodal labor exploitation detection system for the Taiwan DWF Industry is 0.87, while the GFW model achieves an accuracy of 0.83 explicitly. The research facilitates combat labor exploitation and improves industry sustainability. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Class-incremental semantic segmentation faces challenges in retaining the knowledge of old classes while learning new ones. Catastrophic forgetting and background shift are the primary hurdles causing performance degradation. Moreover, class confusion arises when new classes share categorical similarities with existing ones. Due to class confusion, the class-incremental semantic segmentation model overwrites the knowledge of old classes with similar new classes. In this paper, we introduce Similarity-aware Class Discrimination (SCD) to address the class confusion problem. SCD increases the distance between classes that share categorical similarities (i.e., visually similar but different classes) in the embedding space, preventing new knowledge from overwriting old knowledge. This approach encourages the model to discriminate between similar categorical classes, mitigating class confusion in class-incremental semantic segmentation. Our method surpasses existing CNN-based and transformer-based class-incremental semantic segmentation methods in PASCAL VOC 2012.

The general matrix-matrix multiplication (GEMM) is a key operation used in a variety of areas such as Computational science, Data science, Machine Learning, and so on. In transformers which are foundation models, Multi-Head Attention (MHA) has a series of matrix-matrix multiplications. To perform the MHA on GPUs, we need to exploit highly optimized sub-routines for GEMM, provided their hardware vendor. On NVIDIA GPUs, the cuBLAS library is provided in order to support basic linear algebra subprograms (BLAS). In this paper, we examine and analyze several sub-routines to handle a series of matrix-matrix multiplications used in the transformer model on NVIDIA GPUs. © 2022 IEEE.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used in our daily applications. WSNs consist of many small devices called sensor nodes and are used for physical or environmental events monitoring. WSNs are typically used to monitor events from remote or hazardous locations. Therefore, battery replacement is a difficult task. Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is one of the energy-efficient protocols. This protocol minimizes energy dissipation in sensor networks. In this paper, we aim to analyze the impact of base station location on LEACH protocol performance. The results show that the best location for the base station should be in the middle of the network to prolong the network lifetime for last long. © 2022 IEEE.

LoRa is a low-power long-range radio technology for wide-area IoT connectivity with exceptional receiver sensitivity thanks to its chirp spread spectrum (CSS) modulation. However, insufficient data rate has always been an Achilles' heel of LoRa. This paper proposes a novel PHY-layer design, BIC-LoRa, that leverages non-linear chirp shapes as pictograph to enhance LoRa's data rate. It employs multiple non-linear chirps for modulation whose shapes encode additional bits to boost data rate while maintaining resilience to low SINR scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to enhance the data rate of LoRa by embedding bits in the chirp shapes. Furthermore, BIC-LoRa fully leverages the characteristics of non-linear chirps, allowing it to deal with packet collisions and increase network throughput. We implement BIC-LoRa in GNURadio and MATLAB, and compare its performance against CurveALOHA and standard LoRaWAN through real experiments on USRP B210 software-defined radios. Evaluation results demonstrate that BICLoRa achieves up to 29.4% improvement in data rate for a single link and 32% improvement in overall network throughput while retaining the low SNR robustness of LoRa in real-world scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

The development of cost-effective,highly efficient,and durable electrocatalysts has been a paramount pursuit for advancing the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Herein,a simplified synthesis protocol was designed to achieve a self-standing electrode,composed of activated carbon paper embedded with Ru single-atom catalysts and Ru nanoclusters(ACP/Ru_(SAC+C))via acid activation,immersion,and high-temperature *** initio molecular dynamics(AIMD)calculations are employed to gain a more profound understanding of the impact of acid activation on carbon ***,the coexistence states of the Ru atoms are confirmed via aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy(AC-STEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS).Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that introducing a Ru single-atom site adjacent to the Ru nanoclusters induces a synergistic effect,tuning the electronic structure and thereby significantly enhancing their catalytic ***,the ACP/Ru_(SAC+C)exhibits a remarkable turnover frequency(TOF)of 18 s^(−1)and an exceptional mass activity(MA)of 2.2 A mg^(−1),surpassing the performance of conventional Pt *** self-standing electrode,featuring harmoniously coexisting Ru states,stands out as a prospective choice for advancing HER catalysts,enhancing energy efficiency,productivity,and selectivity.

This paper examines recent research focused on optimizing the performance of file system metadata. File system metadata performance significantly impacts overall file system performance and serves as a crucial indicator in server and storage environments that handle a large volume of file man-agement. Recently, various studies have proposed techniques to improve metadata performance. For example, IndexFS combines multiple techniques to achieve meta data throughput that sur-passes existing solutions. Soft updates have been implemented to sequence granular updates to writeback cache blocks at a low cost. The versioning file system employs journal-based metadata to minimize space used by inodes and indirect blocks. The multiversion B-tree uses timestamps to reduce spatial requirements related to directories. In distributed file systems, metadata load is distributed, and the reliability of the metadata service improves as the system size increases. With the importance of metadata management, this paper explores recent research trends in metadata structure and performance optimization based on these studies.

The number of households raising pets is increasing. Accordingly, the health problems of companion animals, which are regarded as family members, are also becoming an issue. Luxating patella and obesity are common in dogs, which account for about two-thirds of companion animals. However, the disease permanently disrupts the dog's behavior and poses a threat to the dog's overall health. Therefore, We proposes a leash-type smart device model that can improve the dog's living environment and establish a proper eating habit. This model provides dog behavior information and exercise amount information through deep learning so that users can provide a suitable parenting environment for the dog. © 2022 IEEE.

Using large language models, this paper presents techniques to improve extremely low-resourced indigenous language translations. Our approaches are grounded in the use of (1) the presence of a datastore consisting of a limited number of parallel translation examples, (2) the inherent capabilities of LLMs like GPT-3.5, and (3) a word-level translation dictionary. We harness the potential of LLMs and in-context learning techniques in such a setting for using LLM as universal translators for extremely low-resourced languages. Our methodology hinge on utilizing LLMs as language compilers for selected language pairs, hypothesizing that they could internalize syntactic structures to facilitate accurate translation. We introduce three techniques: KNN-Prompting with Retrieved Prompting Context, Chain-of-Thought Prompting, and Learning-from-Mistakes Prompting, with the last method addressing past errors. The evaluation results suggest that, even with limited corpora, LLMs, when paired with proper prompting, can effectively translate extremely low-resource languages. © 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics.

It is characterized by a very high noise due to the environmental characteristics of the deep space. Additionally, there is noise affected by the surrounding planets or satellites. Solar noise occurs when the antenna looks directly at the sun, which is caused by the high-gain antenna used to increase SNR due to the nature of deep space communication. Noise of Moon-Earth Communication is noise generated by reflecting sunlight from the sun, which does not directly affect deep space communication, but can occur around the moon in relay cooperative communication via intermediate satellites during multimodal cooperative communication. There is noise from these various planets or satellites, which must be considered because they are not only affected by lunar exploration, but also by other planets in the case of deep space exploration. Therefore, reliable communication techniques reflecting the characteristics of deep space communication must be studied to solve problems arising from low SNR in the mentioned deep space environment. Based on various types of ACKs, the study of the Bundle Protocol's transport option, the Custom Transfer method, is conducted by using previous research on Free Space Optics (FSO) communication such as channel model and suitable coding. Through this, data loss in the DTN communication environment may be overcome. Furthermore, we propose a Deep Space Hybrid Automatic Rate Request (DS-HARQ) suitable for deep space communication environments to overcome the high error rate of DTNs. © 2022 IEEE.
