For an entropy-coded video sequence, a transmission error in a codeword will not only affect the underlying codeword but may also affect subsequent codewords, resulting in a great degradation of received video frames. In this study, a motion-compensated error concealment scheme is proposed for H.264 video transmission. For H.264 inter-coded P frames, the predicted motion vector (PMV) for each corrupted block is first determined by the spatially neighboring motion vectors (MVs) around the corrupted block and the temporally motion-projected overlapping MVs in the previous frame. With the PMV being the central search point, three rood search patterns are developed for motioncompensated error concealment of small-, medium-, and large-motion corrupted blocks. Then error concealment refinement using Lagrange interpolation is performed on all the initially concealed blocks. Finally, the improved ELA (edge based line average) algorithm [11] is employed to refine each concealed block in P frames.

To cope with increasing demands for higher computational power and flexibility, dynamically and partially reconfigurable logic has started to play an important role in embedded systems and systems-on-chip. However, when using traditional design methods and tools, it is difficult to estimate or analyze the performance impact of including such reconfigurable logic devices into a system design. In this work, we present an easy-to-use system-level framework, called Perfecto, which is able to perform rapid explorations of different reconfiguration alternatives and to detect system performance bottlenecks. This framework is based on the popular system-level design language SystemC, which is supported by most EDA and ESL tools. Different hardware-software co-partitioning, co-scheduling, and placement algorithms can all be embedded into the framework for analysis. Perfecto can also be used to design the algorithms to be used in an operating system for reconfigurable systems. Applications to some examples have shown advantages of having an evaluation framework such as Perfecto

An eye tracking system and its application in aids for people with severe disabilities

The object of this paper is to present a set of techniques integrated into a low-lost eye tracking system. Eye tracking systems have many potential applications such as learning emotion monitoring systems, drivers' fatigue detection systems, etc. In this paper, we report how we use an eye tracking system to implement an "eye mouse" to provide computer access for people with severe disabilities The proposed eye mouse allows people with severe disabilities to use their eye movements to manipulate computers. It requires only one low-cost Web camera and a personal computer. A five-stage algorithm is developed to estimate the directions of eye movements and then use the direction information to manipulate the computer. Several experiments were conducted to test the performance of the eye tracking system.

Traditional triangulation positioning requires that a node needs three position-known neighbors to be positioned. This requirement limits the positioning capability, or the number of nodes being positioned, particularly for sparse sensor networks. We propose a positioning approach, two nodes and neighbors examining, by which the node with less than three position-known neighbors may still be positioned as long as its surroundings provide enough useful information. Our simulation results show that the number of nodes being positioned may be dramatically improved. We also consider distance measurement errors which may cause triangulation fail. The two nodes and neighbors examining approach may be used to estimate positions. Besides, we discuss how to estimate positions for some special cases and refine the estimations, and then illustrate the simulation results

In this paper, we propose a new mobicast routing protocol, called the HVE-mobicast (hierarchical-variant-egg-based mobicast) routing protocol, in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Existing protocols for a spatiotemporal variant of the multicast protocol called a "mobicast" were designed to support a forwarding zone that moves at a constant velocity, vrarr, through sensornets. The spatiotemporal characteristic of a mobicast is to forward a mobicast message to all sensor nodes that are present at time t in some geographic zone (called the forwarding zone), Z, where both the location and shape of the forwarding zone are a function of time over some interval (t start , t end ). Mobicast routing protocols aim to provide reliable and just-in-time message delivery for mobile sink nodes. The new HVE-mobicast routing protocol is a cluster-based VE-mobicast routing protocol. The message delivery of nodes in the forwarding zone of the HVE-mobicast routing protocol is transmitted by two phase: cluster-to-cluster and cluster-to-node phases. In the cluster-to-cluster phase, the cluster-head and relay nodes are distributively notified to wake them up. In the cluster-to-node phase, all member nodes are then notified to wake up by cluster-head nodes according to the estimated arrival time of the delivery zone. The key contribution of the HVE-mobicast routing protocol is that it is more power efficient. This effect is mainly achieved by improving the predicted accuracy, especially by considering different moving speeds and directions. Finally, simulation results illustrate performance enhancements in message overhead, power consumption, and predicted accuracy, compared to existing mobicast routing protocols

In this paper, we propose novel schemes to enhance the error robustness of multi-hypothesis motion-compensate predictive (MHMCP) coder without sacrificing the coding efficiency significantly. The proposed method utilizes the concept of reference picture interleaving and data partitioning to make the MHMCP-coded video more resilient to channel errors, especially for burst channel error. Besides, we also propose a scheme of integrating adaptive intrarefresh into the proposed MHMCP coder to further improve the error recovery speed. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed methods can effectively and quickly mitigate the error propagation and the penalty on coding efficiency for clean channels due to the inserted error resilience features is rather minor.

NOC architectures have to deliver good latency-throughput performance in the face of very tight power and area budgets. However, the latency and the power consumption for transferring information down the transmitter stack, through the channel, and up the receiver stack might be unacceptably high. In this paper, we evaluate the designs of packet-switched and the proposed circuit-switched NOC in detail, and we advocate using circuit-switched NOC as it is more attractive for application-specific SOC designs because of communication localization. We implement and synthesize the designs of packet-switched and circuit-switched NOCs. and we take multimedia applications as our case studies. The experimental results show that the area, latency and the energy consumption of the packet-switched NOC are much larger than that of the circuit-switched NOC for application-specific designs

WLANs will become a major portion of the fourth generation (4G) cellular system. The seamless handoff problem in WLANs is a very important design issue to support the new astounding amazing applications in wireless networks. The entire delay time of a handoff is divided into probe, authentication, and reassociation delay times. Because the probe delay occupies most of the handoff delay time, efforts have focused mainly on reducing the probe delay to develop faster handoff schemes. This paper presents a new fast handoff scheme, called the DeuceScan scheme, to further reduce the probe delay for 802.11- based WLANs. A spatiotemporal approach is developed in this work to utilize a spatiotemporal graph to provide spatiotemporal information for making accurate handoff decisions by correctly searching for the next AP (access point). The DeuceScan scheme is a pre-scan approach which efficiently reduces the MAC layer handoff latency. Two factors of stable signal strength and variable of signal strength are both used in our developed DeuceScan scheme. Finally, the simulation results illustrate the performance achievements of the DeuceScan scheme in reducing the handoff delay time and packet loss rate.

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity architecture design of H.264 predictive pixel compensator (PPC) for HDTV application. In intra prediction, we propose a shared adder-based architecture style that supports all of the 17 intra prediction modes, and reduce computational complexity in the I4MB prediction mode 3~8 up to 50% computation. Besides, we have also proposed the distributed memory access to improve the HW usage. As well as, it can be used to reduce the memory size for buffering the neighboring pixels. In inter prediction, we can save about 48% of external memory bandwidth by the data reused through the hybrid block size memory access. Adopting the mixed six-tap FIR filter architecture to design luma interpolation, we can efficiently reduce the hardware cost up to 27%. The implemental result shows the hardware cost of the proposed design is about 60854 gates under a TSMC 0.18mum CMOS technology, which achieves the real-time processing requirement for HD-1080 format video@30 Hz at the working frequency of 87 MHz

This paper proposes a condition-based algorithm for H.264/AVC 4times4 intra prediction. Exploiting high correlation existed in neighboring intra prediction modes, we propose the three conditions to skip the less possible candidates in doing intra4times4 block mode decision. When compared to the 9 prediction modes in the full search algorithm, the proposed algorithm can complete a 4times4 intra prediction using 4.4 prediction modes operation in average. The simulation result shows that the proposed algorithm can reduce computational complexity up to 44% at the cost of less than 0.1 dB PSNR loss in average
