Electro-encephalogram spikes classification and latency computing is one of the important tools in epilepsy diagnosing. However, overlapped spikes cause complexity in problem solving. We use neuro-fuzzy systems and shift-invariant wavelet transforms to solve this problem. It has been shown that our suggested procedures have high-resolution and are able to classify and perform latency computing of overlapped spikes.

Using optimized ion implantation, we have fabricated high performance 2-pole and 3-pole CPW filters on Si substrates at /spl sim/30 GHz, with very narrow 1.0 (3.1%) GHz and 0.75 (2.5%) GHz pass-band as well as small insertion loss. Microstrip filters on Si show small 3.2 dB loss at 27 GHz, which has smaller size than CPW case without the large coplanar ground planes. In contrast, the nonimplanted filters failed due to the high substrate loss.

Many large-scale distributed network applications could benefit from an efficient mechanism to estimate distance in the Internet. Landmark schemes provide such estimates based on distances in a hyperspace in which the hosts are embedded. We evaluate the aging effect of landmark-based coordinates using empirical data. That is, to what extent are past measurements good predictors to estimate the current distance. Our experiments show that based on the data up to 7 days old, the predicted hyperspace-distance function using "triangulation heuristics" correlate relative highly (more than 85%) with the measured distance.

Bone drilling procedures require a high surgeon skill. The required core skills are: recognizing the drilling end-point, ability of applying constant, sufficient, but non-excessive feeding velocity and thrust force. Although several simulators and training systems were developed for different surgery, a bone drilling medical training system does not exist yet. In this paper, a bone drilling medical training system is proposed and a novel control algorithm for the problem is presented. A Graphical User Interface is developed to complete a medical training system structure. Experimental results for controller performance are satisfactory. Additional experiments are performed to check if the developed system improves the skill of trainees or not. Early results suggest that training in the developed medical training system is a promising way to teach drilling into a bone to medical students. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, the cooperation of two feature families for handwritten digit recognition using SVM (support vector machine) classifiers is examined. We investigate the advantages and weaknesses of various decision fusion schemes using statistical and rule-based reasoning. The obtained results show that it is difficult to exceed the recognition rate of a single classifier applied straightforwardly on both feature families as one set by rule based reasoning applied on the individual classifier decisions. However, the rule-based cooperation schemes enable an easy and efficient implementation of various rejection criteria. On the other hand, the statistical cooperation schemes offer a better possibility for fine tuning of the recognition versus the reliability tradeoff, which leads to recognition systems with high reliability that also keep high recognition rates.

The complexity of technical systems that need to be designed and researched is gradually increasing. In order to be competitive and to satisfy the demands of the market, thorough analyses and early risk assessment of the systems are required. System investigation might involve some changes that might entail the redesigning or even redeveloping of some parts of the system. Modifications are usually expensive, time consuming and risky. Consequently, there is a need for methods that examine the possible effects of the modifications before investing in the alteration of the system. There are four methods that are used to study the behavior of a system: simulation, emulation, real-time control and prototyping. In this paper we discuss an approach for a distributed architecture that supports these four testing methods and the interaction between them.

The head related transfer function (HRTF) method of providing spatial sound images has not been capable of dealing with individual differences between human listeners yet. The HRTF varies from person to person and with the direction of the sound source. We focus on this directional variation of the individual HRTF. Principal component analysis is applied to draw the loci of the variation in an orthogonal basis space. Each locus corresponds to a single individual HRTF, and the loci are utilized for clustering the individual HRTF. Some typical ones can be extracted from clusters;we show that they are useful in compensating for the individual differences found in HRTFs.

An efficient approach for the adaptive control of approximately and partially known mechanical systems, like traditional soft computing, uses "uniform structures" for modeling, but these structures are obtained from certain Lie groups as the symplectic group or the generalized Lorentz group. This approach considerably reduces the number of free parameters in the model. Until now its efficiency was investigated for mechanical uncertainties and external dynamic interactions. In this paper the behavior of the electric drives are also included in the investigations. A 1-DOF mechanical system, a pendulum driven by a DC motor in a computed torque control, is investigated via simulation. The necessary torque is calculated from a formal primitive mechanical model and an adaptivity rule. For adaptivity real number scaling and the generalized Lorentz group elements are used. It is concluded that a single adaptive loop can compensate for the mechanical and the electrical uncertainties simultaneously.

Tremendous increase in the Internet traffic has resulted in electronic processing bottleneck for communication networks. We propose a technique to alleviate this bottleneck in ultra-dense waveleng.h division multiplexed networks. This involves transmission of control information on a separate and dedicated channel, called the control channel. The packets on the control channel contain information about the routing of data packets on various channels. Thus, only control channel packets need processing at higher layer(s), while packets on the data channels can stay in the optical domain from source to destination.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a 2-GHz active integrated antenna module. The module comprises a microwave amplifier and a microstrip antenna array. The array comprises two microstrip patch antennas. The module is implemented using the microstrip-line technology. It gives a satisfactory performance. This module can be used in many applications such as active and semi-active seekers, satellite communication, radio altimeters, missile technology, weapon fuzing, manpack equipment, remote sensing, and biomedical radiators.
