In today’s evolving landscape of video surveillance, our study introduces SuspAct, an innovative ensemble model designed to detect suspicious activities in real time swiftly. Leveraging advanced Long-term Recurrent Convolutional Networks (LRCN), SuspAct represents a significant advancement in intelligent surveillance technology. By combining insights from various LRCN models through the Majority Voting ensemble technique, SuspAct enhances its overall robustness, outperforming traditional surveillance methods. Through rigorous experimentation on large-scale datasets, we demonstrate SuspAct’s superiority in proactive crime prevention, showcasing its potential to revolutionize security protocols and contribute substantially to public safety. Heart sound classification method using gammatonegram and SVM

Today cardiovascular diseases have been posing a serious threat to human lives all over the world. Various automated decision-making systems have been proposed by the researchers to help cardiologists to diagnose heart health with more perfection, thus, reducing the frequency of fatalities. This research aims at classifying the Phonocardiogram (PCG) signals captured from the functioning of the cardiac system as normal or abnormal. The methodology proposed here has been validated using the benchmark dataset PhysioNet Computing in Cardiology (CinC) 2016. As of this writing, the studies carried out using contemporary techniques have so far been unable to generate pictorial representation from cardiac audio recordings that match the way the ear processes sound. The present research suggests a unique methodology for the detection of important events in an audio signal using a biologically-inspired depiction of the audio stream through a picture known as Gammatonegram which correlates to the processing of audio in the cochlea membrane of the inner human auditory system. In this study, texture-related features which include Linear Ternary Pattern (LTP), Local Directional Pattern (LDP), Geometric Local Textural Pattern (GLTP), and Local Phase Quantization (LPQ) have been extracted from a visual representation of PCG signal such as Spectrogram, Scalogram, Mel-spectrogram, and Gammatonegram. As compared to the case when researchers were employing other images, it has been noticed that the fusion of the features retrieved from the Gammatonegram has led to an increased overall classification performance metrics. The experiment yielded an overall accuracy of 94.00 % with precision and F1 scores of 91.77 and 93.61 respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Structural integrity is the foundation for both safety and durability and demands constant care and vigilance. In lieu of the traditionally adopted methods for defect detection in manufacturing and structural deformation, advanced techniques with automated methodology have been presented in this paper for identification and analysis with the help of Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) data. This methodology will be flexible, able to treat different types of geometrical structures;thus, it can be found in real-life applications by increasing the scope. It involves capturing high-resolution TLS with fine surface details of the structure. Advanced algorithms fit idealized geometric models-cylinders or planes-such that it matches the data to those that have been scanned. Highly accurate virtual models quantify deviations between the actual structure and the virtual one to identify areas where defects in manufacturing or deformations exceed thresholds set in advance. The nature and extent of these defects are analyzed and visualized clearly across the structure's height. This reduces the actual time spent on structural analysis drastically, as automation increases the speed with great improvement in accuracy. Our results prove the efficiency of this approach in finding even slight deformations-a reliable tool for structural health monitoring. This methodology provides enormous opportunities for engineers and inspectors in charge of maintaining the safety and integrity of new and existing structures. © 2024 IEEE.

Composite spectral spatial pixel CNN for land-use hyperspectral image classification with hybrid activation function

Deep learning methods have played a prominent role in the development of computer visualization in recent years. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a popular analytical technique based on spectroscopy and visible imaging which examines the pattern of light in a target and recognizes objects based on varying spectral properties. However, in remote sensing, detecting surface material via HSI analysis is a critical and difficult task. The performance of spectral-spatial data exploitation is well established to outperform typical spectral pixel-wise techniques. Because of its great feature extraction ability, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have emerged as a potent deep learning approach. CNN translates the input features of an image into an equivalent CNN feature map, in addition to naturally combining spectral and spatial information. However, spectral-spatial properties when combined with pixel-wise extraction can learn more minute details of objects present on the earth’s terrain. In this paper, a noble Composite Spectral Spatial Pixel CNN model for the classification of hyperspectral data is presented which is an amalgamation of 3D-2D-1D CNN. While the 3D and 2D CNN exploit the spectral-spatial features effectively, 1D CNN works on pixel-wise feature extraction. Further, to optimize the classification performance of the proposed model, a new hybrid activation function Flatten-T Swish is also used which is the combination of ReLU and Swish function. The proposed model is compared with other state-of-the-art models based on three popular HSI datasets, and it is found that the proposed model performs better among others in terms of classification and computation time, giving 98.87% accuracy for Indian Pines, 99.92% accuracy for Pavia University, and 99.99% accuracy for Salinas Valley dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A multi-fused convolutional neural network model for fruit image classification

Fruit categorization presents a significant challenge due to the diverse range of fruit types and their similarities in color, shape, size, and structure. This challenge is addressed in this research by proposing a multi-fused CNN approach that integrates three state-of-the-art deep learning models, namely EfficientNet-B0, MobileNetV2, and ResNet50V2, into a unified pipeline. The primary objective is to enhance prediction accuracy and mitigate overfitting issues commonly encountered with conventional techniques. Utilizing the Fruit-360 dataset (both small and full versions), the proposed multi-fused CNN model demonstrates superior performance, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 99.32% and 97.15% in classifying fruit types across 24 and 131 different categories, respectively. This substantial improvement underscores the potential of the proposed approach in reliably detecting fruit types. In future work, efforts will be directed towards optimizing the model for enhanced processing speed, facilitating real-time performance in practical applications, particularly in agricultural automation. Additionally, rigorous experiments on diverse real-world fruit images will be conducted to further validate the robustness of the proposed model. © 2024 The Authors

Decomposition-based hybrid methods employing statistical, machine learning, and deep learning models for crude oil price forecasting

Crude oil prices (COP) profoundly influence global economic stability, with fluctuations reverberating across various sectors. Accurate forecasting of COP is indispensable for governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to make well-informed decisions and effectively mitigate risks. The decomposition-based hybrid models have been showing promising COP forecasting accuracy than other time series forecasting methods. Despite this fact, no systematic study has been conducted to evaluate the true potential of different decomposition-based hybrid methods employing different forecasting models to forecast the COP. Therefore, a hybrid modeling framework is developed by combining efficient decomposition techniques, namely empirical mode decomposition (EMD), ensemble EMD (EEMD), complete EEMD with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), and variational mode decomposition (VMD) with seven statistical models, fourteen machine learning (ML) models, and six deep learning (DL) models. Further, a systematic study is conducted on the resulting decomposition-based hybrid models to find the best hybrid model for COP forecasting. Three distinct train-test data splits are employed to ensure a reliable evaluation of the models using four performance metrics. Extensive statistical analysis is conducted to identify the optimal combination of the decomposition technique and forecasting model for precise COP prediction. The results demonstrate that the proposed decomposition-based hybrid model employing VMD and Huber Regression is statistically the best method among all alternatives to forecast monthly COP. The proposed hybrid method VMD-Huber Regression improves the root mean square error (RMSE) by 21% than CEEMDAN-ARIMA, 58.31% than EEMD-Theta, 13.18% than EMD-Random Walk, and 49.44% than VMD-TBATS hybrid methods in 60–40 Train-Test split ratio. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

In today’s era, smartphones are used in daily lives because they are ubiquitous and can be customized by installing third-party apps. As a result, the menaces because of these apps, which are potentially risky for user’s privacy, have increased. Information on smartphones is perhaps, more personal than compared to data stored on desktops or computers, making it an easy target for intruders. After Android, the most prevalently used mobile operating system is Apple’s iOS. Both Android and iOS follow permission-based access control to protect user’s privacy. However, the users are unaware whether the app is breaching the user’s privacy. To combat this problem, in the paper we propose a hybrid approach to detect malicious iOS apps based on its permissions. In the first phase, weights have been assigned to app permissions using multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach namely Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), and in the second phase machine learning& ensemble learning techniques have been employed to train the classifiers for detecting malicious apps. To test the efficacy of the proposed method dataset comprising 1150 apps from 12 app categories has been used. The results demonstrate the proposed approach improves the efficacy of detecting malicious iOS apps for majority of categories. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

Integrated circuits (ICs) are ubiquitous and a crucial component of electronic systems, from satellites and military hardware to consumer devices and cell phones. The computing system’s foundation of trust is the IC. Most semiconductor businesses are shifting to fabless manufacturing and outsourcing to foundries worldwide as integrated circuit feature sizes continue to decrease. That puts the design business at risk for several things, such as unauthorized overproduction, resale on the black market, and illegal copying brought on by intellectual property theft. Logic locks offer one solution in which the chip’s actual functioning is "locked" with a key only known to the inventor. The design will only function as intended if specific keys are pressed. Unlocking overproduced chips should be impossible for supply chain attackers since designers open them after manufacturing them. Logical locks against the risk of overproduction are the main subject of this research. We examine current locking systems, define features based on crucial processing, and identify commonalities and discrepancies between the employed attacker models. This research paper is intended to assist scientists, IP distributors, and SoC developers in rapidly investigating and comprehending the most recent technologies that should be considered and analyzed for additional research on logic-locking techniques. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.

Cyber-attack detection based on a deep chaotic invasive weed kernel optimized machine learning classifier in cloud computing

Nowadays, Cloud Computing has attracted a lot of interest from both individual users and organization. However, cloud computing applications face certain security issues, such as data integrity, user privacy, and service availability. The only better solution to such issues is to identify and prevent cyber threats before they can cause seriously harm the cloud computing system. Several methods have been suggested so far to detect the attack in cloud computing (CC), but no one method attains satisfactory results. To overwhelm these drawbacks, a Cyber Security Attack Detection using Deep Kernel Machine Learning optimized with Chaotic Invasive Weed Optimization algorithm is proposed in this paper for Cloud Computing. Here, the data is amassed from CSE-CIC-IDS2018 and Bot-IoT datasets. Subsequently, a pre-processing step involving redundancy reduction and missing value replacement for uncertainty removal is achieved through the Developed Random Forest with Local Least Squares (DRFLLS) method. By utilizing Entropy-Kurtosis based feature selection approach, the pre-processing data is given to the feature selection to identify the optimal features. The selected features are supplied to the Deep Kernel Machine Learning classifier (DK-ML), which is optimized using the Chaotic Invasive Weed Optimization algorithm (Chaotic-IWOA) for classification. This classification process classifies the data as normal or anomalous categories with anomalies encompassing, like DoS, DDoS, Theft attacks, and normal attacks. The proposed technique is activated in MATLAB. The proposed technique achieves 24.88%, 17.98%, 45.65%, 35.95% better accuracy for CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset, and 23.93%, 13.94%, 32.94%, and 29.04% better accuracy for Bot-IoT dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Isomorphic Classification of First Degree Cellular Automata

This paper explores the concept of isomorphism in cellular automata (CAs), focusing on identifying and understanding isomorphic relationships between distinct CAs. A cellular automaton (CA) is said to be isomorphic to another CA if the configuration transition diagrams of the two CAs are identical. To illustrate how isomorphism entails the preservation of structural properties while allowing for variations in state representations, we exhaustively explore the isomorphic reversible rules in the first degree CAs (FDCAs), that is, the simple three-neighborhood CAs represented by eight parameters. The experimental study includes reversible FDCAs for states two to 10 with cell lengths of four to seven under the null boundary condition and states two to seven with cell lengths of four to seven under the periodic boundary condition. Given a CA, we also provide two synthesis methods for identifying the set of CAs that are isomorphic to it. The first method operates by permuting the states of a group of CA cell locations, whereas the second method involves exchanging cells at various points. We demonstrate that, depending on the range of exchanged cell positions, the isomorphic CAs produced in this way may have a bigger neighborhood than the input CA. Finally, we provide an exhaustive classification of the elementary CAs (ECAs) using the first synthesis method and compare it with existing results. © 2025, Complex Systems Publications, Inc.
