Multimedia tutorials available online are becoming popular as a means of providing canned explanations for difficult material for brick and mortar classes and online courses. the availability of free multimedia products like Flashplayer by Macromedia ©and the increasing proliferation of high speed access also provides the perfect set of circumstances to produce and make obtainable tutorials for K-12 children who may be especially challenged in some way. For instance, these tutorials would be appropriate and helpful for non-English speaking children to help them learn English and acclimate to their new American environment. this is the perfect time with the increasing Hispanic population within the borders of the United states. students in the computer sciences and computer information systems programs at Florida institute of technology have been working on such tutorials that have video, animation, audio, text, and images to help get across new ideas and topics to school age children. At the same time, software engineering methods for designing such tools are being developed and explored. the scope of this research is being extended to include audio in multiple languages for non-English speaking students. © American society for engineering Education, 2007.

inclusive Ks0Ks0 production in ep collisions at the DEsY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUs detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5 fb−1. Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f2(1270)/a20(1320), f2′(1525) and f0(1710). Masses and wi.t.s were obtained using a fit which takes into account theoretical predictions based on sU(3) symmetry arguments, and are consistent with the Particle Data Group values. the f0(1710) state, which has a mass consistent with a glueball candidate, was observed with a statistical significance of 5 standard deviations. However, if this state is the same as that seen in γγ→Ks0Ks0, it is unlikely to be a pure glueball state.

Jet cross sections were measured in charged-current deep inelastic e±p scattering at high boson virtualities Q2 with the ZEUs detector at HERA ii using an integrated luminosity of 0.36 fb−1. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive-jet production as functions of Q2, Bjorken x and the jet transverse energy and pseudorapidity. the dijet invariant mass cross section is also presented. Observation of three- and four-jet events in charged-current e±p processes is reported for the first time. the predictions of next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations are compared to the measurements. the measured inclusive-jet cross sections are well described in shape and normalization by the NLO predictions. the data have the potential to constrain the u and d valence-quark distributions in the proton if included as input to global fits.

Photoproduction of beauty quarks in events with two jets and an electron associated with one of the jets has been studied with the ZEUs detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 120 pb−1. the fractions of events containing b quarks, and also of events containing c quarks, were extracted from a likelihood fit using variables sensitive to electron identification as well as to semileptonic decays. total and differential cross sections for beauty and charm production were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations and Monte Carlo models.

the Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. this platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

A large set of XM2Vts face database is used to examine whether the selection of color space can enhance the compactness of the skin class and discriminability between skin and non-skin class in thirteen color spaces and six different skin color pixel classification algorithms. the results show that 1) the selection of the color space can improve the skin classification performance 2) the segmentation performance degrades only when chrominance information is used for classification 3) Bayesian classifier is found to perform better as compared to other classification algorithms. Piecewise linear decision boundary classifier algorithm outperforms all the other skin classification algorithms when it is used for images with good illumination conditions.

Over the last few years, support vector machines (sVMs) have shown a great potential as classifiers for remotely sensed data. Generally, these have been used to perform conventional hard classification where each pixel is allocated to only one class. Remote sensing images, particularly at coarse spatial resolutions, are contaminated with mixed pixels that contain more than one class on the ground. Hard classification process may result in erroneous classification of images dominated by mixed pixels. therefore, sub-pixel classification approaches that decompose the pixel into its class constituents in the form of class proportions have been advocated. in this paper, we propose a sVM based algorithm for sub-pixel land cover classification. the proposed sVM based algorithm uses probability estimates for multiclass classification by pairwise coupling. the algorithm is employed to produce sub-pixel land cover classification from a Landsat EtM+ image. Classification accuracy achieved is assessed using three measures, namely, the overall accuracy obtained from a fuzzy error matrix, the squared correlation coefficient, and the root mean squared error. the results are compared with the posterior probabilities derived from the maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) and the fuzzy classification based on MLC. Our experiments show that accuracy obtained from the proposed algorithm is significantly higher than the two bench-marked classifiers. thus, the outputs from sVM based algorithm can be used to reflect the actual class composition of the pixels on ground.

Natural gas hydrates may contain more energy than all the combined other fossil fuels, causing hydrates to be a potentially vital aspect of both energy and climate change. this article is an overview of the motivation, history, and future of hydrate data management using a CODAtA vehicle to connect international hydrate databases. the basis is an introduction to the Gas Hydrate Markup Language (GHML) to connect various hydrate databases. the accompanying four articles on laboratory hydrate data by smith et al., on field hydrate data by Löwner et al., on hydrate modeling by Wang et al., and on construction of a Chinese gas hydrate system by Xiao et al. provide details of GHML in their respective areas.

Focused ultrasound continues to be investigated as an exciting technique for several medical therapy applications including tissue ablation. Phased array transducers serve as important devices for delivering the high intensity focused ultrasound to the targeted tissue. these arrays often produce undesired secondary foci called grating lobes that can result in heating of non‐targeted healthy tissue. Grating lobes can be eliminated by setting the element‐spacing between adjacent elements to λ/2 or less. the aim of this research was to construct and evaluate a 2‐D planar phased array with close to λ/2 element‐spacing. A 7×7 element array with element‐spacing of 0.76mm was constructed using 1,3‐piezocomposite material. Acoustic field measurements of the array focused at three different locations were taken to demonstrate its ability to scan the focus in a volume. in addition, a maximum average intensity of 5.5W/cm2 was measured for the unfocused array using radiation force techniques.

this paper describes a replication conducted to compare the effectiveness of inspectors using Perspective Based Reading (PBR) to the effectiveness of inspectors using a checklist. the goal of this replication was to better understand the complementary aspects of the PBR perspectives. to this end, a brief discussion of the original study is provided as well as a more detailed description of the replication. A detailed statistical analysis is then provided along with analysis of the PBR perspectives. For the individual PBR perspectives, we saw an interesting dichotomy: in the original study there was little overlap among the sets of defects found by each of the three perspectives, while in the replication two of the three perspectives found similar sets of defects on one of the two documents used in the study. interestingly this document was the only case where the users of PBR were not more effective than the users of a checklist. this result leads to a new hypothesis that the complementary aspect of the PBR perspectives is the characteristic that provides the benefit over other defect detection techniques. © springer science + Business Media, inc. 2006.
