in this paper, the design of a fault detection and isolation scheme is addressed. We work on plants modelled via continuous-time nonlinear uncertain systems, where the uncertainty and the fault function are assumed to be random processes. A model-based analytical redundancy approach, which checks on-line the statistical characteristics of a residual through hypotheses tests, is proposed. We consider array languages (sets of pictures consisting of symbols placed in the lattice points of the 2D grid) and the possibility to handle them with P systems. After proving binary normal forms for array matrix grammars (which, even in the case when no appearance checking is used, are known to generate the array languages of arbitrary array grammars), we prove that the P systems with context-free rules (with three membranes and no control on the communication or the use of rules) are computationally universal, able to generate all computable array languages. some open problems are also formulated. © 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Hundreds of students have learned a great deal about cutting-edge technologies in automotive engineering technologies. they have utilized professional design procedures and performed hands-on fabrication and testing. they have merged electrical and mechancial engineering along with computer science and physics. they have also learned to work in teams and to understand the full product realization process.

A number of empirical studies using students as subjects has been carried out in the last few years. these studies are usually conducted as pilot experiments that allow researchers to fine-tune an experiment before deploying it in an industrial environment. though one of the issues usually taken into account with these experiments is their external validity, other issues need to be considered, such as the usefulness of these experiments in the context of a software engineering course. this chapter concisely reports on three empirical studies performed at the Università degli studi dell'insubria during the EsERNEt project and two other empirical studies that we carried out previously, all with students as subjects, so as to provide the context for a discussion on the research and the educational goals that should be taken into account when carrying out an experiment with students to make it successful from both an empirical and an educational viewpoint. Finally, we provide some advice on how to carry out empirical studies with students based on our experiences. © springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

We study multifiber optical networks with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Assuming that the lightpaths use the same wavelength from source to destination, we extend the definition of the well-known wavelength assignment problem (WAP), to the case where there are k fibers per link, and w wavelengths per fiber are available: this generalization is called the (k, /spl omega/)-WAP. We develop a new model for the (k, /spl omega/)-WAP, based on conflict hypergraphs: conflict hypergraphs more accurately capture the lightpath interdependencies, generalizing the conflict graphs used for single-fiber networks. By relating the (k, /spl omega/)-WAP with the hypergraph coloring problem, we prove that the former is NP-complete, and present further results with respect to the complexity of that problem. We consider the two natural optimization problems that arise from the (k, w)-WAP: the problem of minimizing k given w, and that of minimizing w given k. We develop and analyze the practical performances of two methodologies based on hypergraph coloring, one for each of the two optimization problems, on existing backbone networks in Europe and in the UsA. the first methodology relies on two heuristics based on a randomized approximation algorithm and the second consists on an integer programming formulation.

the Kerr electro-optic field mapping technique has been used to study space charge effects in high voltage pulsed propylene carbonate (C/sub 4/H/sub 6/O/sub 3/) using stainless steel parallel-plate electrodes. Measurements presented here were taken using a circular polariscope with aligned polarizers at room temperature (t/spl sim/20/spl deg/C) with average initial electric field strengths of E/sub 0//spl sim/52 kV/cm and for measurement times ranging from 10 /spl mu/s to 1 ms. the light intensity pictures were analyzed along a line in the center of the electrode gap. From the light intensity distribution the electric field and space charge were calculated as a function of position and time. the calculated space charge distributions show both positive and negative charge injections from the electrodes as well as bulk charge dissociation.
