the formation of energy bands in crystals is a consequence of the periodicity of the lattice potential. By numerically solving the time-independent schrodinger equation for a structure of repetitive potential wells, the authors show how bands are formed and how Brillouin zones can easily be obtained. By introducing a perturbation in the wells, they also get insight into polycrystalline solids and impurity states. © 1992 iEEE.

in this paper we study the complexity of sets that reduce to sparse sets (and tally sets), and the complexity of the simplest sparse sets to which such sets reduce. We show even with respect to very flexible reductions that NP cannot have sparse hard sets unless P = NP;an immediate consequence of our results is: if any NP-complete set conjunctively reduces to a sparse set, then P = NP. We also show that any set A that reduces to some sparse set (via various types of reductions) in fact reduces by the same type of reduction to a sparse set that is simple relative to A. We give a complete characterization of the sets of low instance complexity in terms of reductions to tally sets;it follows that if P ≠ NP, then no set of low instance complexity can be complete for NP with respect to disjunctive reductions or conjunctive reductions. © springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

He received a B.S. degree in wood and polymer chemistry in 1972 from S. U.N.Y. College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. He worked as a research assistant at the S.U.N. Y. Polymer Research Center until 1975. He was a research chemist for Velsicol Corp. involved in the synthesis and process development of fire retardant chemicals for a variety of polymer materials. Since joining PPG in 1978 he has been involved in various coating development work most recently he has responsibility for developing fire protective intu-mescent coatings. John I. Ykema:is vice president and chief technical officer at SPD Technologies Philadelphia Pa. He has served in various capacities within SPD (formerly I-T-E) since 1955. He served for three years (1951–1954) with NavSea (formerly BuShips Code 560) engineering electrical power systems for aircraft carriers and cruisers. Mr. Ykema received his M.S. degree in electrical power systems engineering from IIT in 1955 after which he joined I-T-E Circuit Breaker Company in Philadelphia Pa. having various assignments on circuit breakers switch-gear relays transformers and rectifiers for both the commercial and the military market. He is currently responsible for providing technical oversight and the coordination of the technical efforts of SPD companies. Mr. Ykema is a member of ASNE ASTM IEEE and SNAME. He serves on the IEEE Marine Transportation Committee.

Fires aboard U.s. naval ships pose a threat not only to human life, but to ship survivability and combat readiness. the U.s. Navy recognized the need to upgrade and utilize state of the art fire fighting equipment, reduce the flammability of materials used on ships and to employ methods to control fire propagation. this paper focuses on the historical development of a method to control fire propagation from compartment to compartment via the ships electrical cable system. the jacket insulation material on the cables is plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC). these cables will ignite when exposed to a fire source and transport the fire along the cable runs. the Navy, being cognizant of the potential disasterous effects of electrical cable fires, implemented programs to assess the problem. Actual shipboard fire characteristics of cables were studied in conjunction with evaluating methods and materials to control ignition and flame spread. the development and testing of a fire protective intumescent coating to meet the Navy's requirements to control fire propagation along cableways on existing ships is delineated.

in this paper we report the work done on the hypothesisation of word boundaries in Hindi speech. Firstly, the language related clues useful in word boundary hypothesisation are identified. these clues are then grouped into two classes : (i) clues describing conditions to be satisfied at word boundaries, called lexical clues and (ii) clues that consist of frequently occurring patterns in text, called pattern clues. two measures, frequency and correctness, are used to evaluate these clues. the results led to the organization of these clues into hypothesisation and verification clues. Experiments with the word boundary hypothesiser on a 300 sentence text yielded two results : (i) upto 50% of word boundaries in the text are hypothesised and (ii) considerable speed improvement in lexical search is achieved due to the hypothesisation of these boundaries. © 1st European Conference on speech Communication and technology, EUROsPEECH 1989.

this paper proposes a new approach to parse spoken utterances suitable for inflectional languages such as Hindi. this approach exploits a lot of redundant syntactic and semantic information present in the inflections. in this approach, parsing is done at three levels : phrase level clause level and sentence level. this is because each level requires a different parsing strategy. Phrase level parsing uses both the case frame approach and the pattern matching approach. therefore it has the directional freedom and the ability to focus upon the case markers as in the case frame approach and the robustness of the pattern matcher in the neighborhood of a case marker. Clause level parsing allows the free occurrence of certain phrases within a clause. sentence level parsing uses a simple pattern matching technique. the spurious and missing case markers are treated specially using metaknowledge. © 1st European Conference on speech Communication and technology, EUROsPEECH 1989.

He has an M.S. degree in chemical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and is a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Dr. Timothy T. Raw is the principal investigator responsible for the oil contamination monitor project. He has a doctorate in physical chemistry from Rensselear Polytechnical Institute and a B.A. in chemistry and computer science from Saint Louis University. Dr. Raw is currently a staff member at Anheuser Busch Inc. in Saint Louis. Dr. Grant H. Stokes is responsible for the technical management of Geo-Centers Inc. Boston operation. He has doctorate and M. S. degrees in physics from Princeton University and a B.A. from Colorado College. Previous to joining Geo-Centers Inc. he was a staff member in the Laser Fusion Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

international antipollution requirements have been legislated to regulate the oil content of bilge effluent from ships. in response to these standards, the U.s. Navy is currently in the process of installing pollution abatement equipment on all vessels. the equipment will consist of an oil-water separator in the bilge discharge line, followed by an oil content monitor which makes the final decision on whether or not the water is clean enough to be pumped overboard. the monitor is required to make a real-time measurement of oil concentration in the range 15 ± 5 to 100 ± 20 ppm for flow rates up to 50 gal/min. and possibly in the presence of interfering contaminants, such as rust. this paper presents the results of the current effort to develop a monitor which satisfies all of these requirements and is sufficiently rugged for fleet deployment. the monitor under development employs two fiber optic systems and a small microprocessor. the first optical system measures the concentration of particles in the flow as a function of their sizes, using small angle forward scattering. the second determines what percentage of the particles in the flow are oil, using large angle scattering. the microprocessor takes the data from the two optical systems and calculates the oil concentration in the flow. since the particle size is measured by the monitor, no sample preparation is required and the monitor may be placed directly in the discharge line where it responds to changes in oil content in less than one second. in addition, this monitor can notify the operator of impending oil-water separator failure associated with passing large oil particles. A demonstration monitor consisting of the forward scattering unit has been successfully tested at the Navsea oil pollution abatement test facility at the Naval ship systems engineering station at Philadelphia. the monitor agrees well with chemical means of measuring oil content. the aim of this paper is to present the basis of the adaptive control approach being pursued in the Centre for industrial Control science at the University of Newcastle. A key feature of this approach is the separate optimization of procedures for estimation and on-line control law synthesis. Regarding the estimation module, attention is given to such features as data filtering, the response of the estimator, techniques for handling unmodelled dynamics and the question of numerical accuracy. Regarding the control law synthesis module, attention is given to robustness to unstructured modelling errors, disturbance and set-point feedforward techniques and implementation issues. in the paper, these various aspects are illustrated by reference to a case study problem proposed by Mike Master and Herb Cohn from texas instruments.

tHE DEEP-VEE HULL FORM - iMPROVEs sEAKEEPiNG AND COMBAt sYstEM PERFORMANCE

Kehoe Jr. USN (Ret.):is well known for his work in comparative naval architecture studies of U.S. and foreign warship design practices for which he received the American Society of Naval Engineer's Gold Medal for 1981 and the Legion of Merit in 1982. He received the ASNE “Jim-mie” Hamilton Award for 1983. He is currently a partner in Spectrum Associates Incorporated Arlington Virginia. Prior to his retirement in 1982 his naval career included sea duty aboard three destroyers and three aircraft carriers including command of a destroyer and engineer officer of an aircraft carrier. Kenneth Brower:is a partner in Spectrum Associates Incorporated a naval engineering firm which he founded in 1978 which is currently engaged in the design of naval ships comparative naval architecture studies and the development of ship design synthesis computer programs. A graduate in naval architecture from the University of Michigan he has contributed to the design of numerous warships and merchant ships as well as several frigate designs for foreign military sales. Mr. Brower has been the author or coauthor of numerous technical studies and articles. He received the ASNE “Jimmie” Hamilton Award for 1983. Erbil Serter:is the director of Hydro Research Systems S.A. Geneva Switzerland. He is a graduate in naval architecture from Sunderland College and the Imperial College of Science and Technology of London University in England where he earned a D. I. C. in aeronautics. Mr. Serter is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and a member of the Royal Society of Aeronautics. His interest in deep-Vee hull forms began with his involvement in the early investigations of fast patrol boat design concepts. In the early 1970s he developed a 200-ton FPB design with a deep- Vee hull form called the SAR-33 fourteen of which have been built for Turkey. Since 1974 Mr. Serter has been developing deep-Vee hull form designs between 600- and 7000-tons.

A unique deep-Vee hull form has been developed and model tested in Europe for use in the design of corvette and frigate sized ships. the seakeeping performance of this new deep-Vee hull form, whose proportions are suitable for ship operations in a displacement mode at conventional speed-to-length ratios, exceeds the performance of ships with more conventional round-bilge hull forms. it promises to provide a 4,500-ton frigate with the speed, course selectivity, and combat system performance equivalent to that of larger destroyers when operating in the high latitudes of the North Atlantic, especially during the winter season. the authors describe and compare the seakeeping performance of two 4,500-ton frigates, one with a deep-Vee and the other with a round-bilge hull. they discuss the impact of differences in seakeeping performance on combat system availability. From the standpoint of incorporating a deep-Vee hull form into a ship design, certain features of a deep-Vee hull form affect ship proportions, calm water resistance, hull structure (particularly hull girder bending moments), stability, deck area, arrangements, propulsion plant configuration, light ship weights and centers of gravity, and acquisition and life cycle costs differently than a round-bilge hull form. Based on a comparative feasibility design study of two frigates of about 4,500-tons, one with a deep-Vee and the other with a round-bilge hull, the authors quantify the impact of these differences on a ship design.
