the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson ρ(770). the statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. We confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t dependence of natural- and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced ρ(770) differ by two units are negligible for −t<0.5GeV2/c2.

Background: in medical imaging, prior studies have demonstrated disparate Ai performance by race, yet there is no known correlation for race on medical imaging that would be obvious to the human expert interpreting the images. We conduct a comprehensive evaluation of Ai's ability to recognize patient's racial identity from medical images. Methods: Using private and public datasets we evaluate: A) performance quantification of deep learning models to detect race from medical images, including the ability of these models to generalize to external environments and across multiple imaging modalities, B) assessment of possible confounding anatomic and phenotype population features, such as disease distribution and body habitus as predictors of race, and C) investigation into the underlying mechanism by which Ai models can recognize race. Findings: standard deep learning models can be trained to predict race from medical images with high performance across multiple imaging modalities. Our findings hold under external validation conditions, as well as when models are optimized to perform clinically motivated tasks. We demonstrate this detection is not due to trivial proxies or imaging-related surrogate covari.t.s for race, such as underlying disease distribution. Finally, we show that performance persists over all anatomical regions and frequency spectrum of the images suggesting that mitigation efforts will be challenging and demand further study. interpretation: We emphasize that model ability to predi.t.self-reported race is itself not the issue of importance. However, our findings that Ai can trivially predi.t.self-reported race - even from corrupted, cropped, and noised medical images - in a setting where clinical experts cannot, creates an enormous risk for all model deployments in medical imaging: if an Ai model secretly used its knowledge of self-reported race to misclassify all Black patients, radiologists would not be able to tell using the same data the model ha

As science and technology evolve, there is an increasing need for promotion of international scientific exchange. Collaborations, while offering substantial opportunities for scientists and benefit to society, also present challenges for those working with animal models, such as non-human primates (NHPs). Diversity in regulation of animal research is sometimes mistaken for the absence of common international welfare standards. Here, the ethical and regulatory protocols for 13 countries that have guidelines in place for biomedical research involving NHPs were assessed with a focus on neuroscience. Review of the variability and similarity in trans-national NHP welfare regulations extended to countries in Asia, Europe and North America. A tabulated resource was established to advance solution-oriented discussions and scientific collaborations across borders. Our aim is to better inform the public and other stakeholders. through cooperative efforts to identify and analyze information with reference to evidence-based discussion, the proposed key ingredients may help to shape and support a more informed, open framework. this framework and resource can be expanded further for biomedical research in other countries. © 2023

We measure the spin-density matrix elements (sDMEs) of the ∆++(1232) in the photoproduction reaction γp → π−∆++(1232) with the GlueX experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. the measurement uses a linearly-polarized photon beam with energies from 8.2 to 8.8 GeV and the statistical precision of the sDMEs exceeds the previous measurement by three orders of magnitude for the momentum transfer squared region below 1.4 GeV2. the data are sensitive to the previously undetermined relative sign between couplings in existing Regge-exchange models. Linear combinations of the extracted sDMEs allow for a decomposition into natural and unnatural-exchange amplitudes. We find that the unnatural exchange plays an important role in the low momentum transfer region. Copyright © 2024, the Authors. All rights reserved.

spider is a balloon-borne instrument designed to map the cosmic microwave background at degree-angular scales in the presence of Galactic foregrounds. spider has mapped a large sky area in the southern Hemisphere using more than 2000 transition-edge sensors (tEss) during two NAsA Long Duration Balloon flights above the Antarctic continent. During its first flight in January 2015, spider observed in the 95 GHz and 150 GHz frequency bands, setting constraints on the B-mode signature of primordial gravitational waves. its second flight in the 2022-23 season added new receivers at 280 GHz, each using an array of tEss coupled to the sky through feedhorns formed from stacks of silicon wafers. these receivers are optimized to produce deep maps of polarized Galactic dust emission over a large sky area, providing a unique data set with lasting value to the field. in this work, we describe the instrument’s performance during spider’s second flight. © 2024, CC BY.

the spin-exotic hybrid meson π1(1600) is predicted to have a large decay rate to the ωππ final state. Using 76.6 pb−1 of data collected with the GlueX detector, we measure the cross sections for the reactions γp → ωπ+π−p, γp → ωπ0π0p, and γp → ωπ−π0∆++ in the range Eγ = 8 − 10 GeV. Using isospin conservation, we set the first upper limits on the photoproduction cross sections of the π10(1600) and π1−(1600). We combine these limits with lattice calculations of decay wi.t.s and find that photoproduction of η′π is the most sensitive two-body system to search for the π1(1600). Copyright © 2024, the Authors. Phylogenetic studies of Carex L.(Cyperaceae)have consistently demonstrated that most subgenera and sections are para-or ***,taxonomists continue to use subgenera and sections in Carex ***?the Global Carex Group(GCG)here takes the position that the historical and continued use of subgenera and sections serves to(ⅰ)organize our understanding of lineages in Carex,(ⅱ)create an identification mechanism to break the～2000 species of Carex into manageable groups and stimulate its study,and(ⅲ)provide a framework to recognize morphologically diagnosable lineages within ***,the current understanding of phylogenetic relationships in Carex is not yet sufficient for a global reclassification of the genus within a Linnean infrageneric(sectional)*** than leaving Carex classification in its current state,which is misleading and confusing,we here take the intermediate steps of implementing the recently revised subgeneric classification and using a combination of informally named clades and formally named sections to reflect the current state of our *** hybrid classification framework is presented in an order corresponding to a linear arrangement of the clades on a ladderized phylogeny,largely based on the recent phylogenies published by the *** organizes Carex into six subgenera,which are,in turn,subdivided into 62 formally named Linnean sections plus 49 informal *** framework will serve as a roadmap for research on Carex phylogeny,enabling further development of a complete reclassification by presenting relevant morphological and geographical information on clades where possible and standardizing the use of formal sectional names.

Neutrinos and muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere originate from mesons, such as pions and kaons, in air-showers. An accuracy of the absolute atmospheric neutrino flux and its flavor ratio are limited due to the uncertainty of meson productions in hadronic interaction models. in order to reduce such uncertainty, measurements of the charge ratio and the polarization of cosmic-ray muons are important as new inputs to theoretical models which simulate the atmospheric neutrino flux. in this proceedings, we present the results of the charge ratio (R) and polarization (Pμ0) of cosmic-ray muon measurements using the decay electrons collected from 2008 september to 2022 June by the super-Kamiokande (sK) detector. We measured muon charge ratio to be R = 1.32±0.02 (stat.+syst.) and the muon polarization at the production location to be Pμ0 = 0.52±0.01 (stat.+syst.). the sK detector uniquely measured the polarization of cosmic-ray muons with energies more than 1 teV at sea-level because of its underground location. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Cosmic-ray muons are generated from the decay of mesons which are secondary particles produced via hadronic interaction between primary cosmic-ray particles and atmospheric nuclei at the upper the atmosphere. the mesons such pions and kaons mostly decay into muons immediately, reflecting the details of the hadronic interactions depending on their energy and lifetime. the modulation of the cosmic-ray muon rate as well as the flux and the atmospheric kaon-to-pion production ratio are important to determine the flux and energy of the atmospheric neutrino. in particular, the kaon-to-pion production ratio rK/π is measured with the correlation coefficient αt between the cosmic-ray muon rate in the underground detector and the atmospheric temperature. As a result, we obtained the correlation coefficient rK/π = 0.85 ± 0.01 (statistical uncertainty only) and rK/π = 0.12 ± 0.03 (statistical uncertainty only) using the data taken in 10 years at the super-Kamiokande detector. in this article, we report the current status of measurement of the modulation of the comic-ray muon and the atmospheric kaon-to-pion production ratio. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
