A methodology for designing two-degree-of-freedom multivariable feedback control systems is described. A quadratic cost functional is used to measure such performance attributes as tracking error, saturation, and sensitivity to small plant perturbations. Stability margin is measured with and L ∞ -norm on an appropriately chosen stability margin matrix and a mechanism for tradeoff between performance and stability margin is outlined.

Time-harmonic and transient propagation and diffraction phenomena can be described alternatively by progressing and oscillatory waves that express the wave motion in terms of direct and multiple wavefronts or rays, and in terms of resonances or modes, respectively. Each description is convenient and physically appealing when it requires few contributing elements. It is inconvenient and physically less transparent when it requires many elements, and it would then be desirable to combine many inconvenient elements into fewer convenient ones. For a variety of propagation environments, including layered or other guiding regions, this can be done by expressing a group of rays collectively in terms of modes, or a group of modes collectively in terms of rays. When this ray-mode equivalence is invoked selectively, there emerges a hybrid representation that combines ray fields and modal fields in uniquely defined proportions. The theory is based on Poisson summation and on alternative treatments of wave spectra. It has been applied to electromagnetics, underwater acoustics, and SH elastic motion, and is now being extended to general propagation in elastic media.

This paper reviews the basic features of a high-level, interactive, conversational language called L-A-S (Linear AIgebra and Systems). Particular emphasis is placed upon recent developments of this computer-Aided Design (CAD) language. Unlike the conventional menu-driven approach of many CAD packages, L -A -S provides the user with considerable flexibility in the development and maintenance of linear algebra and control algorithms. L-A-S is both a language and an interpreter. Users or L-A-S write programes while interacting with the Interpreter. Programs may he edited, stored, recalled, and executed with the same or a differernt data set. L-A-S data strunures include matrices, polynomials (continuos or discrete). and matrices of polynomials. In this paper. we briefly review the basics or the L-A-S language. Then. we concentrate on those features of L-A-S which have been added within the last year. These include the Multiple Operator Statement (MOS), L-A-S lNT-delined suhroutines. and the most-reccnt “echo” feature for interaction with the interpreter. Example, accompany the text to illustrate each new feature.

GAMUT is an automated testing tool that can verify message activity in message-based systems. This tool is unique because it can be customized for application to a variety of systems and used in all test phases of a development cycle. Using a single interface, rather than an array of port-specific interfaces, GAMUT can generate and verify load traffic through scripts, as well as provide an automatic record and playback mechanism for feature testing. This paper discusses the design philosophy and distinctive features of GAMUT as well as its architecture. It illustrates message definition and the script command language by building a sample test script of a station-to-station call on the System 75 office communications system and concludes with a discussion of challenges and problems encountered while using the tool to test System 75.

Experimental and analytical results have shown that least-mean-squared (LMS) adaptive filtering greatly improves the performance of direct sequence spread spectrum receivers in the presence of narrow-band jammers [1,2,3]. Since the adaptive jammer suppression is, at times, performed at baseband, previous investigations have assumed that both carrier and chip synchronization have been achieved prior to the suppression of the jammer. However, the presence of the jammer can hinder both the acquisition and the maintenance of this synchronization. This paper discusses an LMS-based jammer suppression structure which does not require carrier synchronization. Monte Carlo simulation results are presented which show bit-error-rate (BER) performance for a receiver equipped with such a jammer suppressor.

During the electron cyclotron resonant heating of laboratory plasmas by intense millimeter waves, the thermal filamentation instability can be excited to cause significant fluctuations in plasma density and magnetic field. These pump wave-induced perturbations may affect the plasma confinement.

Efficient development of high-quality software requires a comprehensive set of software development tools. Tools used within the System 75 office communication system project support a hierarchical model of development, and range from compilers, assemblers, and debuggers to high-level tools that drive the software manufacturing process and aid in monitoring software quality and performance. Tools are applied in each of the many steps required to develop, test, integrate, and maintain product releases. Staff roles and procedures for use of these tools encompass a set of development and release-management cycles that begin with the individual developer and extend into the field support organization. The roles and procedures are flexible and easily customized to support various individual and group assignments. Specific tools to be described include the Object Generation System, the Local Administrative Tool Kit; the Oryx/Pecos Test, Inquiry, and Control System; tools for testing processes in isolation; manufacturing and distribution tools; performance-measurement tools; source-control and change-management tools; and tools for program update and system analysis at field sites.

Ship's propellers are currently measured by manual procedures using pitchometers, templates and gauges. This measurement process is extremely tedious, labor intensive and time consuming. In an effort to provide increased accuracy, repeatability and cost effectiveness in propeller manufacture, an automated propeller optical measurement system (APOMS) has been built which rapidly and automatically scans an entire ship's propeller using a 3-D vision sensor. This equipment is integrated with a propeller robotic automated templating system (PRATS) and the propeller optical finishing system (PROFS) which robotically template and grind the propeller to its final shape, using the APOMS-derived data for control feedback. The optical scanning and the final shape are both controlled by CAD/CAM data files describing the desired propeller shape. An automated propeller balancing system is incorporated into the PROFS equipment. The APOMS/PRATS/PROFS equipment is expected to provide lower propeller manufacturing costs.

Coupling of wave species at interfaces and boundaries in a medium composed of plane multiwave layers creates a proliferation of ray fields even after relatively few multiple reflections. This inhibits a ray treatment of propagation from source to observer. The difficulty may be overcome by diagonalizing, in a plane wave spectral representation of the Green's function, the reverberation matrix F descriptive of the boundary coupling. The resulting eigenvectors of F represent combinations of the original Q wave species, to be referred to as eigenrays, which, except for multiplication by the eigenvalue λ q , q = 1 … Q , remain unaltered after one complete reverberation. Thus, eigenrays may be traced through successive reverberations like ordinary rays in a single-wave medium. This feature also permits the original multiwave Q × Q matrix problem to be decoupled into a sequence of scalar problems. Conventional eigenmodes are generated from eigenrays by imposing self-consistency ( λ q = 1) after one reverberation. Alternative representations for the multiwave Green's function by use of these new concepts include plane wave spectral integrals, normal and leaky modes, ray expansions, and hybrid ray-mode expansions. The latter are based on the formulation of an eigenray-eigenmode equivalent. After comparing the new representation with the conventional one, P-SV coupling in an elastic three-layer medium is treated as a special example.
