Traditional methods of teaching software engineering at the undergraduate and graduate levels lack full effectiveness due to the method of organization of the courses and compressed time schedules. This paper presents a studio approach to teaching large-scale, quality software development that uses the technique of reflective practice in a highly interactive learning environment over a sixteen-month period. The results of a prototype offering of this course are described and analyzed. © 1991 ACM.

engineering educators are constantly modifying course offerings and course structure to meet the necessities of our society. One of the ongoing challenges is how to modify the initial contact with students that will encourage them to continue seeking a career in engineering. This involves student recruitment and retention. Our Fundamentals of engineering and computer science (FECS) course at Wright State University has been in place for the past six years and has seen an increase in student retention from 45% to 70%. Improving this retention rate by raising the admission standards is not possible as we have an open enrollment policy set by the state. Therefore, to better understand our students and how they perceive themselves as they enter college, we have been collecting data for the past three years as they take their FECS course using a perception survey at the beginning of the course. Data collected from the perception survey is the focus of this paper. The database consists of responses from 539 students enrolled in FECS from 2003 to 2005. The course is offered each quarter and results are compared between quarters, between years, and between quarters of each year. Data collected and presented includes the student perceptions on math and science preparation, self appraisal, outside help and teaming. Conclusions are also presented from analysis of the survey data on how our initial interactions with the students could be improved. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

Data mining is a technique of extracting information that has not been known before in a collection of data in the database. Data mining has been applied in various fields that require extracting information, some of the work that can be generated with data mining is classification, prediction, and data grouping. In this study, an analysis of village data collection was carried out to explore the potential or knowledge of the data that has been presented with the main objective of producing a grouping of village status. To support clustering or grouping activities the K-means algorithm used with the general process is to carry out the modeling process without supervision and is one of the methods for grouping data with a system partition, with the principle of allocating each data to the centroid or the closest average, work steps conducted in support of this research is to collect data related to the analysis of data grouping and proceed with the calculation process in accordance with the work steps of the K-means algorithm, the amount of data used as a test of 303 villages scattered in the old Padang regency. The results of calculations by displaying a new group of Cluster 0 is occupied by 120 villages, cluster 1 with a total data of 123 villages, Cluster 2 with a total of 6 villages, cluster 3 with a total of 33 villages while cluster 4 with a total of 21. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper contributes to the debate about the relation between software design and standard engineering design. We do this by examining the approaches taken by both disciplines to the design of a small embedded system. The example chosen is that of an automotive cruise control system whose design is described in both computing and automotive literature. This work was.75 cm undertaken as part of our goal of providing a more rigorous basis for discussions on the nature of software engineering which tend to hinge upon assertions about the nature of engineering in general, and conjecture about its relationship to software development. Our view is that such conjectures can be improved if they are based upon detailed comparisons of actual design approaches. The study undertaken suggests that tliere are significant differences in the design processes, and in particular, the nature and role of modelling. Software developers employ-design representations or models as means towards implementation by actually implementing the concepts contained within the model (states, processes, objects). Conversely, traditional engineering utilises design representations as means of modelling the properties of possible implementations which are constructed from componentry of the engineering discipline (sensors, actuators, controllers). This paper does not attempt to argue that software development should be more like other engineering disciplines nor does it support the argument that software development is too complex or different in nature to be compared to traditional engineering. This work is part of a series of studies which is required to clarify the relationship between the two disciplines. © 1996 IEEE.

This study aims to implement a machine learning technique in identifying the irregularities of customer behavior on the use of prepaid electricity pulses. The methods used are Linear Discriminant Analysis and Logistic Regression. The performance of the classification system will be evaluated using the 10-fold cross-validation technique. Validation results are measured using accuracy, precision and recall values. In this research shows that the use of machine learning technique has a good performance in classification of electrical consumption behavior. Experimental results with the different amount of data testing indicate that Logistic Regression method has high accuracy, precision, and recall value when compared with Linear Discriminant Analysis that is 100%. This is due to Logistic Regression method can predict irregularities accurately because the addition of the amount of data does not affect the performance of the method. © 2017 IEEE.

On Modifying Logic Networks to Improve Their Diagnosability

This paper considers the use of control logic to reduce the number of tests required by a logic network and to simplify test generation. The properties of EXCLUSIVE-OR (EOR) circuits as control elements are examined. Systematic procedures are presented for modifying any combinational or sequential network so that the resulting network requires only five tests. These tests can easily be generated using a set of predefined test patterns of length five. The design of diagnosable networks using a limited amount of control logic is also discussed. © 1974, IEEE. This article presents our approach for the Style Change Detection Task at PAN 2022 using discourse markers. Discourse markers (such as ‘what’, ‘I have’, etc.) are words or expressions used to connect, organise and manage conversations. We present two different approaches for Style Change Detection at PAN-2022. For Task 1, (Style Change Basic) our approach is based on identifying conversational patterns within the documents between a user and a possible respondent. Then, using classification algorithms, we predict the point of style change detection within each document. For Task 2 (Style Change Advanced) and Task 3 (Style Change Real World), we use an extensive list of frequently occurring discourse markers to identify the number of speakers as the number of authors within the document. This prediction serves as the number of clusters for text segments within the document. Subsequently, using unsupervised clustering we detect clusters of similar text segments such that each cluster comprises of text segment groups corresponding to each author. The resulting F1 scores for our approaches on the test set are: 0.70518 for Task 1, 0.32128 for Task 2 and 0.56360 for Task 3. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Breast cancer is an occurrence of cancer that attacks breast tissue and is the most common cancer among women worldwide, affecting one in eight women. In this modern world, breast cancer image classification simplifies the process of analyzing, providing objective and accurate results. By leveraging machine learning algorithms and computer vision techniques, we developed breast cancer detection. The dataset is histopathology dataset from BreakHis and UNHAS Hospital. We chose the ConvNeXt-Tiny model then modified the classifier head as the proposed method. Before the dataset is processed by the model, we augment the images by applying random horizontal and vertical flips, adjustments to brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue using color jitter. The augmentation process simulates real-world variance and enhances the model's ability to generalize to unseen data. Our proposed model gained better performance (accuracy, F1-Score) results compared two other techniques to VGG16 and SVM. According to our experiments, the F1-Score for the ConvNeXt-Tiny model with classifier head modification is higher at 0.9516, than the gain for VGG16 at 0.9292, and the gain for the SVM at 0.83. © 2024 IEEE.

Fuzzy logic can be used to represent obscurity based on terms such as high, old, hot, cold, and so on. Fuzzy logic can extend the range of truth values to all real numbers in intervals between 0 and 1. Numbers in this interval represent the possibility that the statement given is "true"or "wrong". The use of fuzzy logic can be used in everyday life, such as in the fields of medicine, engineering, agriculture, transportation, environmental science and also in economic and business applications. As in this study, it was used to calculate the ideal amount of 'tips' for restaurant waiters based on the service provided by restaurant waiters. The method used in this study is to use Mamdani fuzzy logic with the process of defuzzyfication using the Centroid of area (COA). The results of this study are that it can be determined the value crisp of giving tips to restaurant waiters is 45 thousand rupiah provided that the service provided for service = 7 (Excellent) and food service = 8 (Delicious).. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper studies the current status and future directions of RTOS (Real-Time Operating Systems) for time-sensitive CPS (Cyber-Physical Systems). GPOS (General Purpose Operating Systems) existed before RTOS but did not meet performance requirements for time sensitive CPS. Many GPOS have put forward adaptations to meet the requirements of real-time performance, and this paper compares RTOS and GPOS and shows their pros and cons for CPS applications. Furthermore, comparisons among select RTOS such as VxWorks, RTLinux, and FreeRTOS have been conducted in terms of scheduling, kernel, and priority inversion. Various tools for WCET (Worst-Case Execution Time) estimation are discussed. This paper also presents a CPS use case of RTOS, i.e. JetOS for avionics, and future advancements in RTOS such as multi-core RTOS, new RTOS architecture and RTOS security for CPS. © 2020 IEEE.
