The first article reports on context-sensitive augmented-reality research presented at the 2007 International Symposium on Ubiquitous Virtual Reality. This student-organized event explored the use of contextual information, design principles, and effective user evaluation for developing AR applications for ubiquitous computing environments. The second article reports on The International Conference on Tangible and Embedded Interaction, the first conference series worldwide to focus on tangible and embedded interaction. The conference is interdisciplinary, covering the arts, hardware design, software toolkits for prototyping, and user studies and theory development. © 2006 IEEE.

Unmanned vehicle is future vehicle technology. Lateral control technology and longitudinal control technology are needed for unmanned vehicle. Automatic steering system is lateral control technology. A automatic steering system automatically controls the steering to keep the vehicle in its land and also to follow the lane as it curves around. This paper proposes automatic steering system based on fuzzy logic. If the fuzzy rules are set properly, the fuzzy controller can control the objective system nicely. To design an automatic steering system, lateral error dynamics of a vehicle is derived. The proposed automatic steering system is evaluated by SIMULINK in MATLAB. The simulation results show that the proposed automatic steering system works satisfactorily for keeping the vehicle in its land and following the lane. ©ISAROB 2008.

IP lookup is a key packet processing task in IP routers. To achieve high performance, it has been proposed to use TCAMs to implement IP-lookup accelerators. In this paper, in addition to the state-of-art MSMB-LPT scheme for TCAM-based IP lookup, M-MSMB-LPT and MSMB-LPT-I schemes are proposed and studied. Using realistic Internet packet traces, it is shown that MSMB-LPT, M-MSMB-LPT and MSMB-LPT-I schemes with different parameters constitute a solution space for constructing a wide-range of high-performance TCAM-based IP lookup engines. Under cost, performance and scalability constraints best IP lookup engine can be selected from this solution space.

Experimental studies have been used as a mechanism to acquire knowledge through a scientific approach based on measurement of phenomena in different areas. However it is hard to run such studies when they require models (simulation), produce amount of information, and explore science in scale. In this case, a computerized infrastructure is necessary and constitutes a complex system to be built. In this paper we discuss an experimentation environment that has being built to support large scale experimentation and scientific knowledge management in software engineering.

Search engine is a critical component in several stages of a pipeline flow in high-performance IP routers. To achieve high performance, it has been proposed to use TCAMs to implement search engines in hardware. In this paper, the state- of-art TCAM-based MSMB-LPT scheme is used as an example to show how to introduce pipelining into TCAM-based search by presenting pipelined scheme P-MSMB-LPT. It is shown that P-MSMB-LPT eliminates the unnecessary hazard that exists in the MSMB-LPT scheme, and achieves near-optimal speedup with almost no additional hardware overhead.

In this paper, we tackle robust human pose recognition using unlabelled markers obtained from an optical marker-based motion capture system. A coarse-to-fine fast pose matching algorithm is presented with the following three steps. Given a query pose, firstly, the majority of the non-matching poses are rejected according to marker distributions along the radius and height dimensions. Secondly, relative rotation angles between the query pose and the remaining candidate poses are estimated using a fast histogram matching method based on circular convolution implemented using the fast Fourier transform. Finally, rotation angle estimates are refined using nonlinear least square minimization through the Levenberg-Marquardt minimization. In the presence of multiple solutions, false poses can be effectively removed by thresholding the minimized matching scores. The proposed framework can handle missing markers caused by occlusion. Experimental results using real motion capture data show the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Lane detection is an essential component of autonomous mobile robot applications. Any lane detection method has to deal with the varying conditions of the lane and surrounding that the robot would encounter while moving. Lane detection procedure can provide estimates for the position and orientation of the robot within the lane and also can provide a reference system for locating other obstacles in the path of the robot. In this paper we present a method for lane detection in video frames of a camera mounted on top of the mobile robot. Given video input from the camera, the gradient of the current lane in the near field of view are automatically detected. Randomized Hough Transform is used for extracting parametric curves from the images acquired. A priori knowledge of the lane position is assumed for better accuracy of lane detection.

Opportunistic hyperchannel was proposed as an improvement of light-trail to carry IP traffic over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks given its capability of enabling high speed provisioning and accommodating multi- granularity traffic. In an opportunistic hyperchannel, the optical shutters at the start node and the end node are configured to be in OFF state and the optical shutters at the intermediate nodes can be self-adjusted to be in ON/OFF according to actual traffic. With this ability, an opportunistic hyperchannel can be dynamically divided into multiple segments, and each segment can independently accommodate a request. Thus, an opportunistic hyperchannel can amplify the system throughput. In this paper, we present a centralized dynamic scheduling protocol named prioritized maximum independent set (PMIS), and introduce a data structure called 2-dimensional priority search tree (2D-PST) that supports PMIS. With 2D-PST, one round of PMIS can be carried out in O(k . log n . log m) time to maximize the system throughput under the constraint of assuring quality of service (QoS) for opportunistic hyperchannels. The simulation results quantitatively demonstrate the effectiveness of PMIS protocol.

In the reliability modeling of digital control systems, conventional methodologies based on the event-tree/fault-tree (ET/FT) methodology may not represent adequately the statistical dependence between failure events in certain digital systems. Dynamic methodologies can be considered as an important alternative to overcome this limitation. The Markov/CCMT (Cell-to-Cell Mapping Technique) has been proposed as a dynamic methodology for the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) of digital control systems. The application of Markov/CCMT is illustrated using the digital control system for a feedwater system of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Discrete hardware/software/firmware states are defined and transitions between these states are deduced from the control logic of the system, as well as from the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) performed on each component. Markov/CCMT is used to represent the dynamics of the system as the probability of transitions between process variable magnitude intervals (cells) that partition the state space. The resulting Markov model is converted into dynamic event trees which then are incorporated into an existing ET/FT based PRA of a PWR using the SAPHIRE code.

A candidate system is proposed as a benchmark for the assessment of methods for the reliability modeling of digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems. The system under consideration is the digital feedwater control system (DFWCS) of a typical pressurized water reactor (PWR). A detailed description of the components, control laws, failure modes of the components and the communication logic is presented. A representation of the benchmark DFWCS as a finite state machine is also given. The finite state machine description is useful to: a) visualize and establish all the possible connections between the components (system topology), and, b) show how information regarding the status of the system is shared among system components. It is also shown how specific I&C failures, such as a failure in communications, are directly implemented in the model. Finally, requirements for such a benchmark system are revisited and discussed relative to the benchmark system presented.
