Applying knowledge map to diagnose students' misconception and provide suitable teaching materials

Students in the web-based e-learning environment might have their own learning paths due to the structure of the world-wide web. Students can choose suitable learning materials according to their different learning style. There are many researches about learning diagnosis in distance education and the main objective of these researches is to improve the learning effects of students. This research proposes a diagnosis mechanism based on the Knowledge Map and implements a feedback system in order to provide the remedy teaching materials in sequence.

Recent developments in PET scanners such as the HRRT (High Resolution Research Tomograph) developed by Siemens greatly enhanced their resolution as well as sensitivity, but they increased coincidence lines of response more than 4.5 times 10 generated by as many nuclear detectors as 120,000. This formidable amount of data poses a real problem in the image reconstruction and its applications. It also has been the major bottleneck in further developments of the higher resolution PET scanners. To remedy this problem in the image reconstruction, we developed a new algorithm based on the SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) technique incorporated with the symmetry properties of the projection and backprojection processes, especially in the 3D OSEM algorithm. We refer to this technique as the SSP (Symmetry and SIMD based Projection-backprojection) algorithm. As a demonstration, the algorithm was applied to the OSEM (Ordered Subset Expectation Maximization) 3D algorithm with HRRT data and it effectively reduced the total image reconstruction time to 80 folds.

Legged robots can, in principle, traverse a large variety of obstacles and terrains. In this paper, we describe a successful application of reinforcement learning to the problem of negotiating obstacles with a quadruped robot. Our algorithm is based on a two-level hierarchical decomposition of the task, in which the high-level controller selects the sequence of foot-placement positions, and the low-level controller generates the continuous motions to move each foot to the specified positions. The high-level controller uses an estimate of the value function to guide its search; this estimate is learned partially from supervised data. The low-level controller is obtained via policy search. We demonstrate that our robot can successfully climb over a variety of obstacles which were not seen at training time

This paper addresses methodic implementation of a credible ISHM capability for elements of Constellation Systems. ISHM capability must be implemented by a combination of on-board and ground elements, each contributing to determining the health of systems in the most effective manner. Implementation of ISHM capability must evolve continuously to reach higher and higher levels of functional capability. The implication is that a sustainable approach must be defined in order to accomplish a believable capability. This paper describes the methodology, the elements, and the technology to implement ISHM capability throughout the life cycle of elements of Constellation Systems, reaching beyond individual elements that might have a limited life while the constellation moves on.

The Collaborative Large-scale engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Continuous multiday broadband neural data provide a means for observing effects at fine timescales over long periods. In this paper we present analyses on such data sets to demonstrate neural correlates for physically active and inactive time periods, as defined by the response of a head-mounted accelerometer. During active periods, we found that 5-25 Hz local field potential (LFP) power was significantly reduced, firing rate variability increased, and firing rates have greater temporal correlation. Using a single threshold fit to LFP power, 93% of the 403 5 minute blocks tested were correctly classified as active or inactive (as labeled by thresholding each block's maximal accelerometer magnitude). These initial results motivate the use of such data sets for testing neural prosthetics systems and for finding the neural correlates of natural behaviors

The NASA Administrator's Fellowship program (NAFP) research grant is awarded to faculty fellows upon the completion of their one-year resident research at a NASA center. The award provided a unique research opportunity, which is rarely available for faculty and students at community college level, for the author to conduct a research project at a community college. With the support of the NAFP faculty research award, the author was able to not only continue the NASA related research on optimum machining parameters, but also get students involved in the research project. In this paper, the author presents the research project and experimental results. In addition, he shares his experiences of how to engage and supervise community college students in research as well as lessons learned from the process. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

In 2000, University of Rhode Island (URI) President Carothers acknowledged, following an extended and sometimes acrimonious AAUP faculty union grievance process, that there had been a climate hostile to women faculty in the College of engineering. The purpose of this paper is to describe the positive steps that were taken at URI subsequent to that grievance to improve the climate for women faculty in STEM (science, Technology, engineering and Math) fields, and to place these steps within a framework for climate change. The paper starts with an overview of the percentages of women nationally in engineering, followed by a description of the hostile grievance process that took place at URI. Next is a discussion of pro-active measures that were taken by many communities of faculty on the URI campus, including most recently, those of the ADVANCE grant funded by the National science Foundation. These measures have been guided by a grounded theory approach to climate change that posits simultaneous change in individuals, interactional contexts, and institutional practices. As a result, URI has recruited a significant percentage of new women faculty in STEM fields in a relatively short time, and is working hard to ensure that they are retained. There have been many recent national initiatives to address the problem of the under representation of women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. It is well recognized that, beyond workplace equity, diversifying the practitioners in engineering and other STEM fields will enrich these disciplines by bringing different perspectives, skills, and values to the fore, will help America remain globally competitive, and will more responsibly integrate engineering practice with societal needs. Importantly, women and minority faculty also provide critically needed role models needed to attract and retain a more diverse student population. Chronically implanted electrode arrays have enabled a broad range of advances, particularly in the field of neural prosthetics. Those successes motivate development of prototype implantable prosthetic processors for long duration, continuous use in freely behaving subjects. However, traditional experimental protocols have provided limited information regarding the stability of the electrode arrays and their neural recordings. In this paper we present preliminary results derived from long duration neural recordings in a freely behaving primate which show variations in action potential shape and RMS noise across a range of time scales. These preliminary results suggest that spike sorting algorithms can no longer assume stable neural signals and will need to transition to adaptive signal processing methodologies to maximize performance
