Molecular-dynamics simulations of the crystalline silicon-silicon nitride interfaces are performed to investigate the mechanical failure mechanisms at the interfaces under external strain. At 8% applied tensile strain, parallel to the interface, regular crack initiation and propagation in silicon nitride and dislocation emission and propagation in silicon are observed. At larger 16% strain, however, the formation of a pit similar to that in experiments with lattice-mismatched systems is observed. The simulation results suggest the primary mechanism of pit formation is interaction of a local compressional pinch of the film at the interface with the close proximity to the arrival of a dislocation at the interface in the highly strained silicon.

This article describes two demonstrations at the NTT Group Communication EXPO held at the Tokyo International Forum in December 2005. These showed visitors two of our trials on the feasibility of remotely operating instruments in Chile from Japan: an optical telescope and rock hammers in an underground copper mine. These applications use a relatively high bandwidth of around 100 Mbit/s and require short delay times for smooth interactive operation. To satisfy these requirements we used NTT's experimental research network GEMnet2 in collaboration with partner R&E (research and education) networks in North and South America. The demonstrations showed that Internet-based networks can handle interactive network applications with sufficient quality between two sites separated by almost the maximum possible distance on the Earth as long as the bandwidth and the route are carefully managed.
The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging t...

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

There are many different terms when learner surf on web. When learner is reading an instructional material, he/she may not understand the meaning of specific term/keyword in a moment easily. At this time, the learner will need to find out the definitions or references about the keyword. However, unfortunately, the learner will not be able to find out what he/ she is looking for in the most of time. It is because of the instruction designers of the learning materials who had never thought that would be a problem for learners. Therefore, it will be excellent, if the associated documents with the keyword which is the learner looking for could be retrieved automatically, and furthermore, the original document structure could be reconstructed to a more suitable for learning and reading in real-time. In this paper, the graph theorem and the data mining technique are applying to produce an association lattice of keywords and design a searching algorithm of reconstructing the necessary instructional materials on the website automatically.

Incomplete LU factorization is a valuable preconditioning approach for sparse iterative solvers. An "ideal" but inefficient preconditioner for the iterative solution of Ax = b is A-1 itself. This paper describes a preconditioner based on sparse approximations to partitioned representations of A-1, in addition to the results of implementation of the proposed method in a shared memory parallel environment. The partitioned inverses are normally somewhat sparse. Their sparsity can be enhanced with suitable ordering and partitioning algorithms. Sparse approximations to these partitioned inverse representations can be obtained either by discarding selected nonzero entries of these inverses or by precluding the creation of some inversion fills. Experimental results indicate that the use of these partitioned incomplete inverses as preconditioners results in excellent highly parallel preconditioners.

This paper reports the results for a senior-freshman teaming event that took place during the fall quarter 2004. It describes the rational for the event, the design leadership required of the seniors, the structure of the design environment, project reports, student reactions, and the event evaluations. This is the second year that our biomedical engineering seniors have been coupled with our engineering and computerscience freshmen on a joint design project. The first year results were promising enough to continue doing it the second year. The second year had improved expectations for the seniors coupled with more time to interact with the freshmen. Seniors gained valuable experience leading a design team while the freshmen gained experience teaming and interacting with upperclassmen. This event was possible as the director of the freshman engineering and computerscienceprogram was also the professor for the initial course in BME senior design. Over all this has been a win-win effort.
