We present a robust framework for real-time processing of 3D motion capture data. It autonomously analyzes the input data to build a model of the observed subjects, and is expected to perform in situations where the observed features are unstable or frequently occluded. We have implemented the method and presently rely on a marker based motion capture system to provide unlabeled 3D coordinates of non-occluded markers. However, we hope this to be a step towards using regular video camera systems with feature detection to perform autonomous markerless motion capture.

Path restoration is an important approach for building survivable telecommunication backbone networks. Path restoration is known for high restoration efficiency and its ability to protect against single link, multiple link and node failures. Path restoration can be formulated as the well-known multi-commodity network flow (MCNF) problem. While many centralized algorithms have been proposed for solving the MCNF problem, distributed algorithms have received very little attention. This paper presents an online distributed multi-commodity flow approximation algorithm specifically tailored for path restoration. Our algorithm uses O(|E|diam/sup 2/) messages and O(diam/sup 2/) time in the worst case, and substantially fewer messages and less time in practical networks. When simulated on a sample real-life backbone network similar to those used by the telecommunication service providers, our algorithm finds a solution significantly faster than many published algorithms.

The effort to produce an instrument that can achieve high spatial resolution, nondestructive, surface and sub-surface imaging for a variety of materials comes with many challenges. One approach, magnetic resonance-force microscopy (MRFM), lies at the nexus of two sensitive technologies: magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MFM uses a magnetic tip in a standard atomic force microscope (AFM) to obtain magnetic information about a surface. A difference in the magnetic moments of surface atoms in different regions on the surface varies the cantilever resonance. MRI, on the other hand, uses the spin states of magnetically biased atoms to differentiate between chemical species.

Markov random field (MRF) theory has widely been applied to segmentation in noisy images. This paper proposes a new MRF method. First, it couples the original labeling MRF with a boundary MRF that can help improve the performance of segmentation. Second, the boundary model is general and does not need prior training. Third, unlike existing related work, our model offers more compact interaction between the two MRFs. Experiments on synthetic images and real clinical datasets show that the proposed approach is able to produce good segmentation results, especially removing noise in low signal-to-noise ratio regions.

Novel ZnO nanostructures such as hollow nanospheres, nano-cages, nanoneedles, tetra-pods, nanowires, aligned nanorods and nanotubes are synthesized via thermal evaporation of ZnO and graphite powder mixtures in reduced oxygen atmosphere in the presence of argon and nitrogen flows. The ZnO nanostructures, especially nanospheres, have a unique shape and are hollow inside with walls densely decorated with aligned nanowires. Photoluminescence of synthesized ZnO structures measured at 300 K exhibits a strong near band edge peak at ∼380 nm and deep level green band centered at ∼550 nm. Fabricated ZnO structures can be studied for various applications in optoelectronics and sensors.
