ATP_mCNN: Predicting ATP binding sites through pretrained language models and multi-window neural networks

Adenosine triphosphate plays a vital role in providing energy and enabling key cellular processes through interactions with binding proteins. The increasing amount of protein sequence data necessitates computational methods for identifying binding sites. However, experimental identification of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues remains challenging. To address the challenge, we developed a multi-window convolutional neural network architecture taking pre-trained protein language model embeddings as input features. In particular, multiple parallel convolutional layers scan for motifs localized to different window sizes. Max pooling extracts salient features concatenated across windows into a final multi-scale representation for residue-level classification. On benchmark datasets, our model achieves an area under the ROC curve of 0.95, significantly improving on prior sequence-based models and outperforming convolutional neural network baselines. This demonstrates the utility of pre-trained language models and multi-window convolutional neural networks for advanced sequence-based prediction of adenosine triphosphate-binding residues. Our approach provides a promising new direction for elucidating binding mechanisms and interactions from primary structure. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects a considerable percentage of women of reproductive age and is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, leading to symptoms such as pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. The aim of this study is to develop a predictive model for the classification of endometriosis using four Machine Learning algorithms: Random Forest, LASSO, SVM, and Naive Bayes. For this purpose, a dataset from the Global Health Data Exchange was utilized, consisting of 1,000 cases of patients with endometriosis. The methodology included data cleaning and preprocessing, as well as the evaluation of each algorithm's performance using four metrics: precision, recall, F1-Score, and accuracy. The findings revealed that the Random Forest algorithm was the most effective in identifying endometriosis, outperforming the other algorithms with a precision of 0.99 for the “endometriosis” class and an overall accuracy of 0.98.

Robots have become increasingly important in a variety of life domains as a result of the rapid advancement of technology. Additionally, robots are employed in education as teaching assistants in science, art, and language courses. This research aims to explore the potential of robotic systems as a multipurpose tool for increasing cultural awareness, language proficiency, and communicative competence in the GenAI era. Language games, conversation simulations, and real-time feedback mechanisms are just a few examples of interactive scenarios enabled by virtual robot systems or tutor robots that enable immersive language experiences that go beyond the limitations of conventional schooling. This research contributes knowledge that explores how AI can be used to personalize language teaching according to the needs and learning styles of each student in higher education. The total population of undergraduate students involved in this research was 350 for the 2023 academic year, with 24 students selected purposefully based on sample characteristics from this group who were exposed to using AI for one semester. The research method used is a mix method with quantitative analysis of the results of surveys and interviews with students who are known to have given positive responses and proposes a comprehensive strategy for using AI robot technology in EFL classrooms, which can significantly improve effective learning outcomes. The survey results also show that if educators have a solid understanding of the relationship between linguistic acquisition and technological advances, they will be better prepared to design engaging, individualized lessons that prepare their students to use the language effectively in real-world contexts. The robot-assisted language learning (RALL) approach used in this study, with the integration of robots in the classroom, has the potential to change the way people learn languages to make it more interesting, fun, and motivating, increase engagement

Capacitance-to-voltage conversion is essential for capacitive sensors in various industries, including touch interfaces, medical devices, and moisture measurement. However, circuit design faces challenges like non-linearity, noise, and small capacitance variations affecting voltage signals. This article proposes a phase-locked loop in free-running oscillator mode with a frequency-to-voltage converter to enhance accuracy and stability. Test results show a 97.9% measurement accuracy, demonstrating reduced noise and improved stability. The proposed circuit is ideal for high-precision applications in diverse environments, overcoming limitations of traditional methods.

Effects of superabsorbent polymers on autogenous shrinkage and microstructure in metakaolin-based cementitious materials

The incorporation of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) and metakaolin in high-strength microconcrete offers a promising strategy to enhance performance while reducing environmental impact through clinker substitution. This study evaluates the feasibility and sustainability of SAP-modified microconcretes by analyzing fresh and hardened-state properties, autogenous shrinkage, and microstructural characteristics. Three microconcrete and paste mixes were investigated: a reference mix and two containing 0.15 % and 0.30 % SAP by cement mass, all with 10 % metakaolin substitution and a constant water/cement ratio without additional curing water. The results demonstrated that SAP effectively mitigated autogenous shrinkage, with MKSAP30 reducing shrinkage by 53 % compared to the reference mix. Microstructural analysis revealed a significant refinement in the pore network, reducing the average pore diameter from 508.76 µm (MKREF) to 214.65 µm (MKSAP30), despite an increase in total porosity. Moreover, SAP-modified mixes exhibited improved hydration efficiency, as evidenced by increased C-S-H formation and calcium hydroxide content in thermogravimetric analysis. The elastic modulus increased by 5.2 % and 13.9 % for MKSAP15 and MKSAP30, respectively, suggesting that enhanced hydration and pozzolanic activity offset the expected mechanical loss due to porosity. These findings highlight the dual benefits of SAP incorporation: improving concrete performance while promoting sustainability. The synergy between SAP and metakaolin enhances durability and mechanical properties, making SAP-modified microconcrete a viable solution for high-performance and environmentally friendly construction applications. © 2025 The Authors

Multimodal Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC) is a task of predicting the emotion of each utterance in a conversation by utilizing both verbal and non-verbal modalities. However, existing approaches often struggle to bridge cross-modal gaps, resulting in misaligned features and frequent misclassification of minority emotions into semantically similar majority emotions. To address these challenges, we propose MERNet, a framework that employs cross-modal knowledge distillation and contrastive learning to align multimodal features and effectively distinguish subtle emotions in conversations. Our framework consists of two stages: 1) guiding non-verbal modalities with the text modality to transfer knowledge and align their features, and 2) applying contrastive learning with emotion labels as anchors to distinguish subtle differences between similar emotions and address the class imbalance problem. Experiments conducted on two benchmark datasets, IEMOCAP and MELD, demonstrate that our MERNet outperforms existing state-of-the-art models.

This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of an RC polyphase filter (RCPF) and circuitry for measuring its frequency characteristics. The integrated circuit is fabricated on a 0.6 µm CMOS process and its supply voltage is 5 V. The integrated circuit includes a filter under test (FUT), a four-phase square wave generator, several analog switches and differential amplifiers to amplify the high-impedance signals of the RCPF. This FUT is a third-order complex RCPF whose passband is 8 − 40 MHz. This paper describes the design of these circuits in detail. This integrated circuit can select two measurement methods by means of external control signals. The first method uses a four-phase square wave. The frequency characteristics are measured by using an on-chip four-phase square wave generator driven by an external clock generator and by a spectrum analyzer tuned to the fundamental frequency. The second method uses an external network analyzer. Furthermore, this integrated circuit is equipped with a calibration circuit to measure the frequency characteristics of the circuitry except FUT by passing through the input / output signals of the FUT. As a result, the frequency characteristics of the FUT itself can be accurately measured. The effectiveness is confirmed through evaluation of the fabricated integrated circuit. © 2025 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The increasing prevalence of deep hoaxes, such as fake news and phishing schemes, poses a significant threat to cybersecurity, undermining trust and spreading misinformation. In Indonesia, surveys indicate that more than 60% of people exposed to hoax news believe that it is true, emphasizing the urgent need for robust detection methods. Traditional cybersecurity approaches often struggle to keep pace with the growing scale and sophistication of these attacks. To address this challenge, this research investigates the use of deep learning techniques, specifically focusing on text-based hoax detection in the Indonesian language. The study fine-tunes IndoBERT, a pretrained deep learning model optimized for Indonesian text, to enhance the accuracy and scalability of hoax detection. The IndoBERT model was trained on a balanced dataset of 29,552 articles, comprising both hoax and real news content, collected from the Mafindo API and Kaggle's Indonesia News Dataset. The model was fine-tuned using supervised learning and evaluated using several key metrics, including accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall. The results demonstrate that IndoBERT outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches, achieving an accuracy of 98.51%, an F1-score of 98.44%, and a precision of 98.23% on the test set. These results highlight the effectiveness of IndoBERT for hoax detection, which offers a scalable solution to improve cybersecurity defenses against deceptive content. This research contributes to the integration of advanced deep learning models into cybersecurity systems, addressing the evolving landscape of cyber threats. © 2025 IEEE.

This study pioneers a high-performance UV polarization-sensitive photodetector by ingeniously integrating non-centrosymmetric metal nanostructures into a graphene ( Gr ) / Al 2 O 3 / GaN heterojunction. Unlike conventional approaches constrained by graphene’s intrinsic isotropy or complex nanoscale patterning, our design introduces asymmetric metal architectures (E-/T-type) to artificially create directional anisotropy. These structures generate plasmon-enhanced localized electric fields that selectively amplify photogenerated carrier momentum under polarized UV light (325 nm), synergized with Fowler-Nordheim tunneling (FNT) across an atomically thin Al 2 O 3 barrier. The result is a breakthrough in performance: a record anisotropy ratio of 115.5 (E-type, − 2 V ) and exceptional responsivity (97.7 A/W), surpassing existing graphene-based detectors by over an order of magnitude. Crucially, by systematically modulating metal geometry and density, we demonstrate a universal platform adaptable to diverse 2D/3D systems. This study provides a valuable reference for developing and practically applying photodetectors with higher anisotropy than ultraviolet polarization sensitivity.

A Self-Healing WDM Access Network with Protected Fiber and FSO Link Paths Effective Against Fiber Breaks

In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FSO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems. The new optical line terminal (OLT), remote node (RN), and optical network unit (ONU) in the presented PON architecture result in self-protective function against fiber breakpoints. In the measurement, 25 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) modulation was applied on each WDM channel to assess the downstream and upstream signals after 25 km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 25 km SMF + 2 m FSO connections, respectively. In addition to using protected fiber paths for self-healing operations. This PON system can also apply the FSO link method. The measured bit error rate (BER) for all downstream and upstream traffic was maintained below 3.8 × 10−3 with forward error correction (FEC). The detected optical power sensitivity of the proposed self-restorative fiber- and FSO-based WDM-PON for downstream and upstream WDM signals ranged from −33.5 to −28.5 dBm and from −33 to −28.5 dBm, respectively, and the corresponding power budgets of the downstream and upstream WDM signals were between 29.5 and 30.5 dB and 33 and 38 dB, respectively. © 2025 by the authors.
